the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 44 friday april 18 2008 all the lehigh news first wrestling coach resigns after 13 years by nicole falcone â– pat santoro of maryland university will replace greg strobel as head coach of the mountain hawks squad wresting head coach greg strobel stepped down from his position on the mountain hawks squad to pursue an administrative role in lehigh athletics dean of athletics joe sterrett announced in a press conference tuesday strobel who has led the hawks for 13 seasons will be replaced by pat santoro a former lehigh assistant coach a four-time eiwa coach of the year strobel leaves the hawks with an ncaa championship six eiwa champi onships and a record of 189-83-1 under his belt in his new position in the athletics department strobel will be in charge of the lehigh wrestling summer camps and alumni fund raising leaving behind his spot on the sidelines will be a difficult transition to make strobel said initially it's always tough strobel said when you have an occupation for so long it's like what else do i know what else can i do can i wake up in the morning and not call myself coach but strobel said when sterrett approached him with the opportunity it came at the right time he was ready for a career move we'd been talking about this year for several years he said i just felt like it was a good time to move on we have a good young team so i wanted to make sure we get a good guy in santoro was the right guy sterrett said santoro travels back to the lehigh valley from college park maryland where he spent five years as head coach of the maryland university terrapins in 2008 santoro was named acc coach of the year after leading the squad to a 16-4 season and its first conference title since 1973 although santoro was excited for the opportunity to return to his hometown breaking the news to his champi onship squad was painful it was the most difficult thing i had to do profession ally santoro said it was pretty emotional it's a great group of kids i talk[ed to some of the captains and i know they are meeting right now and they are focusing on next season the terrapins weren't the only ones who were sur prised with the news the mountain hawks squad was not aware strobel would be leaving wrestler jeff santo 08 said some of the kids got pretty upset but lam sure they all calmed down santo said they weren't really sure most of the guys know santoro ... he was the coach when i got here and he's awesome i told the guys he's a great so don't be upset it's not like we're getting someone we don't in honor of coach groups raise money by emily smith the lehigh athletics depart ment is teaming up with theta xi fraternity and nitschmann middle school in bethlehem to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis ms last summer former lacrosse coach and current lehigh athlet ics recruitment director chris wakely was diagnosed with ms according to nationalmssoci ety.org ms can lead to coordina tion problems impaired vision and numbness wakely was eventually had to step down from his position as mountain hawks head coach because of the disease the support at lehigh has been wonderful wakely said anyone who has been dealing with ms wonders how their em ployer will respond we just had no idea but the university has responded extremely well roseann corsi public rela tions coordinator for athletics planned many of the events for ms awareness this past summer when wakely was diagnosed with ms we decided we wanted all the student-athletes to do some thing for ms all of the students jumped on board immediately corsi said the first event took place at nitschmann middle school on april 7 lehigh's community out reach by athletes who care about helping program teamed up with students from the middle school to plan events that would raise money and awareness for ms wakely said some student athletes have been exceptional in their work for ms awareness wakely said pitcher of the softball team lisa sweeney 09 along with former lacrosse play ers stuart baxter 08 greg furst 08 and dan honeywell 08 have been extremely involved all of these students have had a very integral role in what's been going on wakely said the nitschmann middle school students were also enthusi astic corsi said according to a university relations article the events at nitschmann included an assem bly where wakely spoke to stu dents about this own experiences the event also included a seg ment called are you smarter than a nitschmann student based on the popular show are you smarter than a fifth grader the show asked game-show style questions to lehigh students based on information about ms the goal was to raise aware ness of ms among nitschmann students corsi said it was a good experience both for our students here and for the students at nitschmann the next event to benefit ms is a walk on april 20 at 11 am the 5k walk will begin on good man campus and end at the lacrosse fields by 1 p.m for the beginning of the men's lacrosse team's game against notre dame mountain hunks compete b&wphoto by greg bander a contestant for lehigh's mountain hunk contest held in grace hall tuesday during greek week tried to win the judges over by performing a song see greek week page 2 violence on south side prompts police response by vincent amoroso â– muggings lead to increased police patrols and safety measures off campus in light of recent attacks in south bethlehem the lehigh and bethlehem police are de veloping safety measures to ensure the off-campus violence subsides chief of police edward shupp said police are increas ing off-campus patrols and con tinuing educational awareness campaigns in order to combat the attacks we are allocating addi tional man power and bikes ... we want a more visible pres ence shupp said the lehigh police depart ment's investigative team is also working with bethlehem police to try to identify indi vidual attackers he said police reports have identi fied the attackers as young teenagers i think because so many of these kids have working par ents and minimal supervision they hang out with the wrong crowd and their curiosities for new things are a big part of the attacks shupp said noelle amos 10 was a vic tim of one of the recent attacks on east fifth street after leaving a
