murray sally ride the first american woman to travel to space stressed the importance of teaching science and technology to children ride spoke at zoellner arts center on tuesday for the distinguished lec ture series ride said the u.s is behind other countries in research of science and technology because american universi ties are not graduating enough students in the subjects but it is not the university's fault the problem starts before college ride said and even before high school children in elementary school are genuinely interested in science and math but social pressure in middle school filter students especially wom en away from science she said ride said america can change these stereotypes and retain children's inter est in science by making science fun popular and to space discusses the importance of science education in zoellner arts center accreditation team says grads lost on campus by greg alvarez graduate students are not a sufficient part of the campus environment according to the middle states accreditation committee after their recent analysis lehigh kathleen hutnik director of the office of graduate student life said she thinks the commit tee's criticism is fair i think they would very much like to be more visible on campus and more a part of it she said on the other hand they do need a distinct and sepa rate place hutnik said one of the best ways to get graduate students and undergraduate students in teracting is through academics people would be interested in opportunities for undergradu ate students to get more in volved in graduate research and vice versa she said hutnik said things are begin ning to change for graduate students i'm just thrilled we are start ing to recognize that graduate students have needs too and we are starting to do something about it hutnik said despite the accreditation committees criticisms hutnik said graduate life is improving she said the office of graduate student life was only created within the last six years and the graduate student senate's budget was just significantly increased president alice gast has also made a concentrated ef fort to include graduate students she said graduate students have their own set of social resources available to them the gradu ate student senate sponsors 15 different clubs ranging from the argentine tango club to the mba association to the thai student association the office of graduate student life provides a host of services to graduate students there are yoga lessons professional devel opment opportunities and even weekly coffee hours in the catacombs under packer me morial chapel but not all graduate students feel they need to be a more active part of the lehigh envi ronment christina ulloa is a student in the masters in is not linked to recent south side muggings a lehigh student woke to find a burglar in her home on the 300 block of e fifth street saturday morning according to police five female students live at the address a student who lives in the house but who said she wasn't home at the time of the break in said one of her housemates heard someone try to open her locked bedroom door at around 6 a.m at around 6:45 a.m the housemate got up to go to the bathroom when she heard someone in the hallway she then saw a tall black man who she did not know and began screaming at that point the man ran out of the house the intruder had been in three of the students rooms that morning she said the student said when she returned to her house she found her room rummaged through and her wallet and ipod missing according to police a cell phone camera credit cards and 200 were stolen from the house bethlehem detective mark diluzio said the break-in is not linked to the recent series of muggings on e fifth street he said the saturday in truder was tall 6 foot 4 inches and over 20 years old unlike the muggers who have been reported to be 15 to 18 years old and shorter in stature victims of the muggings have not been able to give facial descriptions because the attackers wore sweatshirts to cover their features however diluzio said the man who broke into the house was not wearing a hood so the student could provide a facial description the descriptions are so different diluzio said he also said the past inci dents have been robberies while the saturday break-in was a burglary diluzio said the police have not identified a suspect but they are still investigating the victim said the bur glary has given her a bad im age of the south side diluzio credits the recent rise in late night crime to the warm weather he said more people are out on the streets later at night and they are forget ting they still need to practice safety precautions walk with a friend he said lock your doors and be
