the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 40 friday april 4 2008 all the lehigh news first accounting department ranked no 1 in magazine by meg grant lehigh's accounting program topped a special business week chart which ranked programs based on student feedback accounting professors agree lehigh's strong student body dedicated faculty and large num ber of recruiters are the three main components that have brought the program recent success professor kenneth sinclair former chair of the accounting program and current accounting professor is not surprised by the poll's results in the program he said there is a balance between a high-quality curriculum strong faculty who care about students strong students that want to learn great firms and career opportunities and many offered outside activities james largay 111 professor of accounting attributes the success of the program to a multitude of reasons we have very good students and a set of dedicated faculty in volved with a lot of research out side of lehigh he said our students are very marketable faculty and students both stressed the relationship be tween students and faculty is very important in the accounting program the accounting courses are intense but accounting profes upcoming pa primary brings obama to valley by andrew daniels sen barack obama's first stop in the lehigh valley drew more than 3,500 residents college students activists and supporters to muhlenberg college's memorial hall monday night the stop was part of obama's six-day tour of pennsylvania in his effort to win the state's april 22 primary the democratic candidate pledged to address the nation's most pressing concerns from making health care and college education affordable for all people to ending the u.s military's involvement in iraq although obama was more than an hour late to the speech the crowds cheers grew louder after each promise real change in america happens from the bottom up obama said we can be the agents of change obama vowed to eliminate corrupt practices by big businesses and promised to put money back into the hands of families and workers if you work in this country you should not be poor obama said obama said 47 million photo courtesy of chad briggs americans aren't receiving proper health care and his proposals will remedy the situation if elected he said he will guarantee health care eligibility to all americans he said the health care crisis has been discussed for decades but nothing has been accomplished because of lobbying on behalf of corporations we must change how politics is done in washington obama said we have to shake it up addressing criticisms from sen barack obama spoke of real change for american citizens at a rally monday night at muhlehberg college the speech was held in preparation for pennsylvania's april 22 primary women frustrated by housing lottery by kaitlin kelly â– officials cite co-ed policy as reason for low number of quads reserved for women the numbers were posted the dorms were toured and the rooms were selected and now some freshmen are angry lehigh's housing lottery took place last month most freshmen decided on who to live with before picking out a room and many were hop ing for four-person apartment suites but it turned out that there were only 18 quads out of 53 allotted for women upper classmen included rising sophomores - this year's freshmen - are required to live on campus next year and some feel they are stuck with inadequate housing ozzie breiner director of residential services acknowl edges that only 18 quads were left open for women but he says this number was reached in a reasonable way the male to female ratio at lehigh had a lot to do with it breiner said after gryphons were hired and gryphon roommates se lected we had 422 men to par ticipate in room selection and officials dalai lama visit unaffected by china-tibet crisis by katy jacobson as the dalai lama's visit to lehigh is approach ing the increasingly tumultuous relationship be tween china and tibet has brought up questions of security and safety i expect it to be an enjoyable experience for all who attend and i really don't expect any problems said edward shupp chief of police we're trained to handle anything that may occur although shupp asserts security issues during the visit will not be a problem he explained the matter will continue to be looked at as the dates approach in three and a half months we will reevaluate the situation for safety issues shupp said but for the most part we rely on intelligence from the state and rely on their expertise the dalai lama's security is being handled most ly by the pennsylvania state department while in the u.s as well as the fbi the police department and the fire department shupp said some of the lehigh police have been further trained for dignitary protection which is similar to secret service training for high profile individuals shupp said there will also be a bomb dog sweep and a haz ardous material sweep and everyone who attends the lectures will go through metal detectors there will be no bags cameras etc allowed into stabler arena shupp said we are preparing for the safety of all the patrons attending the events not only the dalai lama shupp said we hope for a safe and enjoyable expe rience for all who attend the dalai lama's visit is scheduled for july 10 to 15 and includes a series of teachings and a public lecture at stabler arena tickets for the lecture have already sold out according to joshua w.c cutler executive direc tor of the tibetan buddhist learning center which is co-sponsoring the dalai lama's visit recent world events won't affect the dalai lama's visit the chinese are protesting every time he see ranking page 3 see housing page 5 see obama page 2 see visit page 3 spring fever page 7 rflfam ; ' liuj baseball team looks il for league win km page 16 graduate senate increases budget thebrownandwhite.com
