the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 38 tuesday march 18 2008 all the lehigh news first business college ranked no 25 down five spots from last year by shana bellin lehigh's college of business and economics is no 25 in the nation ac cording to business week's annual busi ness school rankings paul brown the dean of the business college said the high ranking is due to lehigh's dedication to excellence despite the high ranking the busi ness school dropped five places from last year business week attributes the drop from no 20 to a weakness in finding jobs for marketing majors upon graduation paul brown said it's becoming in creasingly difficult for marketing majors to find work but he disagreed with busi ness week's general claim the students who graduate out of the college of business and econom ics are 100 percent placed within six months of graduation he said diana furey 08 who is a marketing major said the weakness isn't necessar ily lehigh's fault an advertising firm doesn't go around hiring like a financial firm she said price waterhouse cooper will come to campus and hire 100 kids for marketing firms sometimes there's one spot for one kid each year b&wphoto by chaucy dixon furey said she would like to see le high do a better job of bringing market ing firms to the school the college scored an a plus in the category of teacher quality it also earned an a in job placement facilities and service paul brown said he considers the school very fortunate to consistently be ranked so high there are probably across the u.s a couple thousand business schools paul brown said and then there's probably a couple-hundred that are absolutely the the college of business and economics held its major fair in rauch business center friday march 14 good student-faculty relationships was one of the strengths in lehigh's no 25 ranking by business week fraternity disbanded after two hospitalized by elizabeth callahan the beta theta pi fraternity chapter at lehigh was disbanded by the organization's national headquarters thursday in response to an incident one month ago when two freshmen were sent to the hospital with near-lethal blood alcohol contents after attending a pledging event at the house the students will be permitted to live in the beta house for the remainder of the semester on the condition that there is no property damage or code of conduct violations said john smeaton vice provost of student affairs the beta house will be considered a residence hall and not a fraternity house no gryphon will live in the house but university staff will check on the house periodically smeaton said smeaton said it was a shame that the event occurred and that the fraternity had to be closed but university policies are widely known and fraternities cannot let events occur that jeopardize student health or safety it's a consequence of the actions smea ton said it's unfortunate but behavior has consequences the national headquarters disbanded the chapter and suspended the charter which leaves the option open to reopen a chapter at lehigh in the future this is unlikely to happen anytime soon smeaton said the fraternity will still undergo a university hearing for charges of furnishing alcohol to minors and endangering the lives of students march 17 hearings for individual beta members facing charges will be held at a later date to be determined school to cosponsor presidential debate by greg alvarez lehigh is cosponsoring a potential presidential debate in philadelphia between sen barack obama sen hillary clinton and sen john mccain that would focus solely on science technology and the environment obama and clinton the remaining democratic candidates and mccain the republican nominee have been extended invitations to participate but all have yet to respond science debate 2008 is scheduled for april 18 at philadelphia's franklin institute organizers say they will still hold the event even if only one candidate participates hundreds of scientists university presidents busi ness leaders and nobel prize laureates have signed on to support the debate in addition to lehigh cornell columbia carnegie melon and harvard universities are sponsoring the debate this is about the health of our planet and the future of our economy said director of public rela tions and communications for the franklin institute lynda bramble we've lost our status as innovators in this world bramble and dork sahagian head of lehigh's environmental initiative both said these issues have barely been addressed in all previous debates if candidates could do a debate specifically on this it would be huge sahagian said however sahagian said he was somewhat con cerned that it takes the urging of universities and other leaders to get the candidates talking about sci ence and the environment if the candidates decline the invitation to partici pate sahagian believes it sends the message that those concerned with environmental issues or just science issues are not an important enough voting bloc to worry about science debate 2008 organizer shawn otto said lehigh's greatest contribution to the event is actually its name we are asking the candidates to think in a new way and we need a lot of credible people pushing them this way he said lehigh's support shows the candidates these issues are important and worthy of attention otto said otto also said students of the sponsoring univer sities will play a vital role students can sign on to support the event and submit questions online the organizers hope to pick out exemplary student ques tions and use them in the debate the youth of the u s will be affected by the is sues of science technology and the
