sponsored by al pha kappa psi honorary business fraternity several states are without the uniform small loan law and as a consequence citizens in these states must pay interest rates on loans which run as high as 25 per cent a month and 400 per cent a year mr henderson stated mr henderson who is actively engaged in speaking before legisla tures throughout the country in an attempt to secure the passage of laws against persons and institu tions who exact an exhorbitant rate of return on short time loans de clared that most of the high inter est rates were a result of specula tors and financial firms trying to realize an unfair profit at the ex pense of the public sponsors loan law the russell sage foundation ac cording to_mr hend&rson was the instigator of the small loan law which is now in effect in the state of pennsylvania mr henderson also explained the needs of borrow ers in moderate circumstances who are unable to borrow from banks he outlined briefly the steps tak en by the russell sage foundation industrial loan associations and other organizations to meet these requirements ¦ mr henderson has directed for the past five years an aggressive fight against loan sharks was concerned with the life history of electrical appliances in modern industry and the contribu tions of the westinghouse company in this field scenes were shown depicting the part played by electri city in modern business in house hold duties and in modes of trans portation turbine construction shown the turbine with the solid rotor a silent picture portrayed the details of construction of steam turbines the picture showed the emphasis placed in^,the construc tion process on precision measure ments of castings and accuracy on the rotor the features of the new est type turbines are the automatic valve intake and the forced lubri cation system the last two reels showed activi ties in the mining industry in a soft coal mine near wildwood pa it presented an explanation of the mechanized action of drilling cut ting gathering conveying sorting and delivery of coal and how the entire operation is controlled by men at switchboards and not through manual labor how the navy could have saved 300,000 by the use of a radium in spection of a battleship casting was demonstrated by dr gilbert e doan assistant professor of metallurgy in an address testing welds by gamma rays from ra dium to the american society for testing materials wednesday at pittsburgh dr bradley stbughton head of the department of metal lurgical engineering also attended the meeting ? a radium picture of the stern post casting and of the keel knuc kle casting of the u s s chester one of the navy's new 10,000 ton cruisers plainly revealed a num ber of shrinkage cracks three weeks later when the cruiser steam ed out for a trial the casting broke ship now in dry-dock the ship is now in dry-dock at norfolk where the casting will be replaced at a cost of about 300,000 the navy department is contem plating the purchase of 1-3 dram of radium for testing purposes because the castings were below the sub-deck of the vessel it was impossible to reach them with an x-fay transformer also it was im possible to dismantle the castings and carry them to the laboratory however it was quite simple to take the small capsule of radium and allow it to shine through the casting and reach a sensitive photo graphic film previously attached to the opposite side although the thickness of the steel was from four to seven inches good pictures were obtained dr doan also showed radio graphs of welds in which porosity and lack of fusion were made plain ly visible although the outward ap pearances of the welds were flaw less conducts tests at lehigh dr doan assisted in the test at the invitation of dr robert mehl of the naval research laboratory and was carried out in the nor folk navy yard he became inter ested in the experiment and after his return to lehigh conducted further experiments on welds his address dr haig took the group on an inspection trip of his laboratory apparatus for freez ing microscopic sections micro tomes testing tables and photo microscopes were examined dr haig then led the group downstairs where they insngcted the morgue the address was delivered in the nurses lecture room and dr haig discussed the importance of analy sis and synthesis and the part they play in medicine today he pointed out that several diseases now can be more effectively treated as a result of chemical synthesis he cited diabetes and cretinism as examples in diabetes treatment with insulin a synthetic compound has proven very successful the insulin acts in the same capacity as the substance secreted by the pan creas in the body in diabetic pa tients however the pancreas fail to secrete properly and diabetes re sults cretinism on the other hand is an abnormal condition due to the improper functioning of the thyroid gland it is due to thyroid deficien cy the chemist has been able to extract a substance known as thy roxin from sheep this substance when given to cretins usually re sults in an improved physical and mental status the physician today dr haig said is relying more and more upon the aid of the laboratory for more penetrating and accurate diagnosis in certain ailments in the treatment of sore throat dr haig declared it is important to know whether the condition is caused by vincent's angina syph illis or diptheria the method of treatment is different in each case and so it is necessary to know the causative agent a general discussion followed dr haig's talk we went back to our posts tense with the excitement of our first attack one of our ships had sighted the stern lights on the british ships there were seven of them s three mine layers and four destroyers we crept very close before they sighted us when they flashed a coded light signal supposed to be known only to the british howev er we knew the coded answer and flashed it back thinking we passage of laws against persons and institu tions who exact an exhorbitant rate of return on short time loans de clared that most of the high inter est rates were a result of specula tors and financial firms trying to realize an unfair profit at the ex pense of the public sponsors loan law the russell sage foundation ac cording to_mr hend&rson was the instigator of the small loan law which is now in effect in the state of pennsylvania mr henderson also explained the needs of borrow ers in moderate circumstances who are unable to borrow from banks he outlined briefly the steps tak en by turbines the picture showed the emphasis placed in^,the construc tion process on precision measure ments of castings and accuracy on the rotor the features of the new est type turbines are the automatic valve intake and the forced lubri cation system the last two reels showed activi ties in the mining industry in a soft coal mine near wildwood pa it presented an explanation of the mechanized action of drilling cut ting gathering conveying sorting and delivery of coal and how the entire operation is controlled by men at switchboards and not through manual labor how the navy could have saved 300,000 by the use of a radium in spection of a battleship casting was demonstrated by dr gilbert e doan assistant professor of metallurgy in an address testing welds by gamma rays from ra dium to the american society for testing materials wednesday at pittsburgh dr bradley stbughton head of the department of metal lurgical engineering also attended the meeting ? a radium picture of the stern post casting and of the keel knuc kle casting of the u s s chester one of the navy's new 10,000 ton cruisers plainly revealed a num ber of shrinkage cracks three weeks later when the cruiser steam ed out for a trial the casting broke ship now in dry-dock the ship is now in dry-dock at norfolk where the casting will be replaced at a cost of about 300,000 the navy department is contem plating the purchase of 1-3 dram of radium for testing purposes because the castings were below the sub-deck of the vessel it was impossible to reach them with an x-fay transformer also it was im possible to dismantle the castings and carry them to the laboratory however it was quite simple to take the small capsule of radium and allow it to shine through the casting and reach a sensitive photo graphic film previously attached to the opposite side although the thickness of the steel was from four to seven inches good pictures were obtained dr doan also showed radio graphs of welds in which porosity and lack of fusion were made plain ly visible although the outward ap pearances of the welds were flaw less conducts tests at lehigh dr doan assisted in the test at the invitation of dr robert mehl of the naval research laboratory and was carried out in the nor folk navy yard he became inter ested in the experiment and after his return to lehigh conducted further experiments on welds his address dr haig took the group on an inspection trip of his laboratory apparatus for freez ing microscopic sections micro tomes testing tables and photo microscopes were examined dr haig then led the group downstairs where they insngcted the morgue the address was delivered in the nurses lecture room and dr haig discussed the importance of analy sis and synthesis and the part they play in medicine today he pointed out that several diseases now can be more effectively treated as a result of chemical synthesis he cited diabetes and cretinism as examples in diabetes treatment with insulin a synthetic compound has proven very successful the insulin acts in the same capacity as the substance secreted by the pan creas in the body in diabetic pa tients however the pancreas fail to secrete properly and diabetes re sults cretinism on the other hand is an abnormal condition due to the improper functioning of the thyroid gland it is due to thyroid deficien cy the chemist has been able to extract a substance known as thy roxin from sheep this substance when given to cretins usually re sults in an improved physical and mental status the physician today dr haig said is relying more and more upon the aid of the laboratory for more penetrating and accurate diagnosis in certain ailments in the treatment of sore throat dr haig declared it is important to know whether the condition is caused by vincent's angina syph illis or diptheria the method of treatment is different in each case and so it is necessary to know the causative agent a general discussion followed dr haig's talk very little excite ment our first taste of fighting came on the night of march 9 1915 former german naval officer relates sinking of british ships three of our radio stations had picked up messages from british ships in the north sea by radio compass readings taken at these three points we could tell just where they were our fleet was giv en the order to go out after them false alarm sounded it was a dark cold night out on the north sea we proceded in breast formation thus combing a wide area with not a single light showing all of the men except the ones needed to run the ship were in their bunks trying to rest then the alarm came every man sped to his post but it was a false alarm and we were shortly sent back to our bunks we were only there a few minutes when the second alarm rang and we went back to our posts tense with the excitement of our first attack one of our ships had sighted the stern lights on the british ships there were seven of them s three mine layers and four destroyers we crept very close before they sighted us when they flashed a coded light signal supposed to be known only to the british howev er we knew the coded answer and flashed it back thinking we were other british ships they signaled us to proceed we passed them and steamed ont out of sight then we turned and approached them from the direction of the eng lish shore this time we flashed the
