the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 35 tuesday february 26 2008 all the lehigh news first planned parenthood leaves health center by martina russial the health and wellness center will no longer offer services from planned parent hood because too few students were using their services said a representative from the organization arlene daily planned par enthood's northeast division spokeswoman said the local branch has now moved to a new branch at 65 e elizabeth aye in bethlehem in the beginning lehigh wanted to have weekly after noon visits by planned parent hood daily said but then this past year it was changed to biweekly visits in the morning the number of patients dropped enough to suggest the planned parenthood staff would be better used at the bethlehem branch she said by the end of this year she said numbers of patients dropped off enough that there was no point in the biweekly visits daily said the services will be moving to the bethlehem branch created four years ago although planned parent 2 hospitalized 14 cited at beta theta pi by julie stewart beta theta pi fraternity has been suspended by both the university and its national headquarters after police cited 14 male students for alcohol-re lated offenses friday feb 15 of the 14 citations 11 were to freshmen for underage drinking michael j esposito 11 and timothy malacrida 11 were sent to st luke's hospital the chapter's president an drew edmonds 09 and max well muheim 09 were cited for selling or furnishing alcohol to minors one member of the class of 2010 was cited for underage drinking the citations were issued at approximately 10:30 p.m dave cohen president of the interfraternity council said the chapter is suspended by both the university and its na tional headquarters the incident is under inves tigation and the chapter will remain suspended until the in vestigation is complete he said while suspended the chap ter cannot participate in any social or philanthropic events cohen said cohen said he cannot com ment on the specifics of the case but he said ifc is con cerned about the incident we're going to try to work to get through the next six weeks of new member educa tion and make sure nothing like this happens again cohen said in an e-mail muheim said he could not comment on the incident or the status of the investigation as the investigation is still open on several fronts i'm not going to comment on the inci dent at this time he said in an e-mail the brothers of beta theta pi have been and will continue to be fully cooperative with investigators edmonds declined to com ment i would like to comment on this he said but given an ongoing investigation i cannot say anything at this time malacrida also declined comment to the brown and white tim wilkinson director of the office of fraternity and sorority affairs was out of his office and unavailable to com ment at press time school has no plans to put research online by elizabeth fontaine â– lehigh will not follow harvard university's decision to put faculty research in a free online database harvard university recently announced it will be making its arts and sciences faculty's research avail able worldwide for free although lehigh's faculty research is accessible to the public in various forms the university has no plans to create a free electronic home base as harvard has done research conducted in the college of arts and sciences is found in the form of published articles journals and books barbara traister associate dean of graduate and research programs in the arts and science college said they have published 17 books over the past two years she said that in the same amount of time faculty in the arts college have probably published about 150 to 200 articles and this research can be found online by consulting databases of scholarly articles the college of arts and sciences also released its first edition of acumen a magazine reporting the creative work scholarship and research of the col lege last fall acumen's editor robert nichols said they hope to publish the magazine annually the college has wanted to put this type of publi cation out for a while nichols said we're hoping it increases the visibility of the research that takes place within the college the magazine focuses on several professor and faculty projects acumen is not a scholarly presentation of the research traister said it's a somewhat informal discussion of what people are doing in the college traister said everyone is curious about the out come of harvard's decision to make all research available for free online it certainly hasn't been something that i've even heard discussed at lehigh she said i don't think the institution can suddenly announce we're going to publish our faculty's work on the web without a lot of discussion with the faculty the p.c rossin college of engineering and ap plied science hosts a wide range of research projects and its bi annual magazine resolve published twice a year focuses on research related to bio nano and systems engineering lehigh has a lot of research going on but it's not a story that's told very well bruce koel interim vice president for research said i'll do whatever i can to get the word out koel said the university is focused on increasing research and graduate programs he said he is continuing to find ways to support and increase the visibility of both funded and non funded research research is such a valuable and important com ponent of where the
