the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 1 tuesday january 22 2008 all the lehigh news first university receives 4 million donation by matt brichta ■descendant of moravian leader leaves large gifts to lehigh and moravian college lehigh university received a 4 million endowment from the estate of charles d couch a graduate of lehigh in 1938 couch was a descendent of one of the leaders of the moravian denomination in the 1700s and a relative of one of the founders of moravian college we are so grateful to mr couch for his generosity and forethought and for the confi dence he continually showed in the direction and future of the university president alice gast said in a news release his gift gives lehigh the financial flexibility to explore new opportunities that we otherwise might not be able to pursue gast said it will make lehigh a better place for the generations of students yet to come to south mountain gast said couch passed away in de cember 2006 at the age of 91 he was a descendent of count nicholas ludwig yon zinzen dorf a moravian church reverend upset over vandalism at church by elizabeth callahan someone vandalized a statue of st joseph and baby jesus thursday night outside of the rectory of st joseph's parish on east fifth street the incident prompted a letter from the reverend of the parish to all lehigh students that called for among other things the discontinuance of financial aid to students living off campus a surveillance tape from the parish shows three people in rain coats walking east past the rectory at 11:51 p.m thursday the third student to pass broke off the spotlight in front of the statue and threw it at the statue the three people then continued walking the same three people are seen walking in the other direc tion on the tape at 2 a.m the rev raymond slezak of st joseph's parish said in an inter view saturday he believes the actors were students because of the time of night and the way they were dressed there is heavy student traffic in that area late at night because of the popularity of leon's restaurant and bar the faces of the individu als are not visible on the tape slezak said he did not file a re port with the police because he did not believe they would be able to do anything b&w photo by christopher chew slezak said he posted a letter to students on the cars parked on east fifth street friday night in the letter slezak wrote that students going to and from leon's on east fifth street have vandalized property on numer ous occasions he said he plans on notifying the lehigh alumni association and president al ice gast about the events and push for the discontinuance of scholarships to students living off campus you have shown yourselves to be inhospitable trashy and not welcome here slezak wrote in the letter he said lehigh students are someone vandalized the statue of st joseph and baby jesus outside of the rectory of st joseph's parish on east fifth street thursday prompting the reverend to distribute a letter to students newvp named to take over fundraising campaigns by elaine hardenstine the lehigh administration recently named a new vice president for advancement joseph kender jr in his new position kender will head lehigh's shine for ever campaign kender was hired by a small advisory group headed by president alice p gast the search team included paul brown dean of the col lege of business and eco nomics and denise blew and frank roth both officers of the board of trustees ron ald ulrich paul leitner and brad scheler members of the board also interviewed people in new york accord ing to gast the advisory group chose to use a targeted specific search as opposed to hiring a search firm based on recom mendations and people they already knew the group found candidates who were willing to move to lehigh not using a firm allows for more flexibility and allows administration to act quick ly brown said in a phone interview it gives you the ability to blitz it he said man arrested after violent attack inside campus pizza by andrew daniels a bethlehem man is in jail after attacking another man with a piece of wood at campus pizza tuesday according to court records eric hackley 46 struck baron chase 54 in the head with a 2-by-3-foot piece of lumber causing severe head injuries the incident occurred at approximately 2 p.m inside the restaurant located on 22 e fourth st according to police affidavits hackley stated ear lier in the day he and chase had a violent encounter and he was pissed off and grabbed the nearest thing he could find hackley went into the pizza shop after chase and hit him in the head with the piece of lumber according to police reports when officers arrived on the scene chase was unconscious lying on the floor bleeding from his head and mouth area profuse ly he was immediately taken to st luke's hospital according to police reports after the attack hack ley dropped the piece of wood and fled police found him on the 300 block of morton street shortly after and charged him with aggravated assault recklessly endangering another person possessing in struments of crime and possession of heroin hackley is currently in northampton county prison on 40,000 bail a hearing is set for jan 25 with district judge nan cy matos gonzalez police were unavailable for
