the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 24 friday december 7 2007 all the lehigh news first adopt-a-family gifts stolen from soccer team by larissa staszkiw gifts for lehigh's adopt-a-fam ily charity were stolen from a stu dent's house on east fifth street the night of nov 25 shannon lockwood 08 captain of the women's soccer team said she was keeping the bags of clothes and toys in the living room the gifts approximately 500 in value were to be given by the women's soccer team to a family of four lockwood said her roommate found the back door to the house wide open at 7:30 a.m on nov 26 the window in the kitchen was also open lockwood said she didn't think anything was wrong until she no ticed the bags of gifts were missing she said she suspects someone came into the house through the kitchen window and left through the back door according to the bethlehem po lice report the incident is listed as a burglary and is currently an open case under investigation b&wphoto by katherine layman lockwood said the gifts were the only missing items in the house lockwood said the stolen pres ents were especially upsetting since the team raised the money to give the gifts to a family in need i just hope whoever did take them really needed them lock wood said we all couldn't under stand who would be such a grinch and take bags of presents especially with how long we worked to raise the money as a team lockwood said the team re placed the clothes and toys student groups distributed gifts to local families tuesday at the ninth annual adopt-a-family event sponsored by lehigh's community outreach by athletes who care about helping program before the event this year gifts were stolen from a women's soccer player's house the incident is under investigation the team replaced the gifts engineering dominated by male students by kaitlyn landers the p.c rossin college of engineering and applied sciences is a renowned undergraduate engi neering school the majority of students and faculty are male but the school has made efforts to help balance the male to female ratio males comprise the majority of students in engi neering fields across the board said david wu dean of the college of engineering at lehigh's graduate school approximately 21 percent of the student body is female wu said nationally 18 percent of engineers are female lehigh is a little bit above the average wu said certainly we can potentially do a lot better at the undergraduate level the engineering school is 20 percent female according to lehigh's fall 2007 10th day of classes census the number of female faculty members also con tributes to the imbalance professor kristenjellison who teaches civil and environmental engineering said she thinks hiring more female faculty members would benefit female students i wish there were more female faculty just for more role models for women engineers at least more than 10 of us,"jellison said i don't think the university should hire women just to hire women but hopefully we will get more women candidates despite the difference in numbers of males and females most female engineers feel confident com fortable and supported it would be good to see more women but it doesn't affect you said sarah mastroianni 08 president of the lehigh chapter of the society of women engineers if anything the imbalance makes you want to do better the women engineers i know here are so involved in so many things it just seems that women engineers are very ambitious and successful in their endeavors the gender gap in engineering often develops club encourages recycling efforts halted by katie ginda ■members of the green action club were asked to stop separating trash during their public effort to encourage recycling on campus a public demonstration to encourage recycling was brought to an end monday when bruce christine gen eral manager of dining services asked three members of the green action club to stop separating trash in the university center dining areas jen nieuwkerk 10 rachel jeanes 11 andjordyn pfalzgraf 10 were collecting recyclables from a large wastebasket in pandini's in the upper university center during lunch when christine asked them to stop they said christine said the sight could upset some custom ers and the students could not separate the trash in the dining room they were pulling trash out of the trash can while people were eating christine said nobody wants to look at half-eaten discarded garbage christine likened the situation to changing a baby's dirty diaper in public he said he was trying to be sensitive to customers when he asked the students to stop christine said he supports the group's initiative and has supported the green action club and its re cycling efforts in the past they can sort all the trash they want christine said there's a time and a place for it and that was not the time or the place christine said he also asked the three women to stop as a measure of safety the trash cans may have contained raw contaminated food and medical waste he said christine said he offered to assist with the group's program and set up members with plastic gloves aprons and goggles nieuwkerk and pfalzgraf said they were each wearing one glove on the hand that was sorting the trash christine said the club could continue its program but first must get in touch with the director of dining services to arrange different conditions the club would not be allowed to collect the re cyclables from the trash in public but could arrange to
