- the brown and white - lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 23 tuesday december 4 2007 smc granted more than 500,000 for programs by katy jacobson south mountain college re ceived a 555,400 grant from the andrew w mellon foundation to support the growth of the pro gram over the next three years peter zeitler professor of earth and environmental sciences and director of south mountain col lege called the grant smc's aca demic bread and butter according to zeitler the grant is tied to a budget that was sub mitted in the school's application to the mellon foundation the money will help fund fac ulty and staff benefits recruiting efforts communications events lectures student projects and an annual summer retreat zeitler said he did not think the large grant will cause people to take the program any more seriously 500,000 sounds like a lot of money but i don't think it will buy people off if they oppose smc zeitler said there are probably deeper reasons for it smc has faced opposition to its teaching methods because the program does not use letter grades to evaluate its students instead it uses one-page written evaluations from the professors which students keep in their per manent files students spend roughly one third of their college curriculum in the smc program about 48 credit hours out of the required with its chapter restored kappa sig to recolonize by samantha maes kappa sigma fraternity will be moving back into its house on the hill at the beginning of next semester after being recolonized kappa sig's national charter was revoked last january after its district grand master requested the brothers attendance at a hearing held by the fraternity's supreme executive committee to address the fraternity's history of infractions the brothers would not com ment about their infractions after the revocation of their charter 13 brothers traveled to the national organization in nashville term they presented a reorganization plan including biographies of each brother a new scholarship plan recom mendations from alumni com munity service and new bylaws basically we had to prove that we were going to change our culture that we were going to remove alcohol from kappa sig at lehigh that we were going to remove irresponsibility said mike mcgee 09 , the grand master of ceremonies of kappa sig by the end of the appeal the brothers were given the oppor tunity to prove themselves as an interest group over the summer kappa sig was required to send 10 brothers to the fraternity's grand con clave in miami fla in the past b&wphoto by chris chew they had low attendance but this year 12 brothers attended in order to move back onto the hill the brothers first had to see if the university would give them their house back once they were given permission the university set a quota for occupancy to get back on the hill we just have to have 10 men live there next semester jason schatz 08 president of kappa sig said we'll be having 15 to 16 live there the university was glad that we were back and was more than welcoming brothers from other fraterni ties said they were glad kappa kappa sigma fraternity's house now vacant will reopen next semester the fraternity has recolonized at lehigh and will need to recruit 25 new brothers this year more profs gain tenure despite u.s downtrend by desiree annunziato the number of tenured profes sors and tenure-track faculty is slowly dwindling across the u.s according to the american as sociation of university professors but at lehigh the reverse is true lehigh has a high proportion of tenured and tenure-track facul ty compared to other universities provost mohamed el-aasser said the board of trustees met with a harvard representative cathy trower who shared the national landscape of the area with the board according to her oct 11 presentation lehigh in 2007 has 70 percent of 438 total faculty who are tenured compared to 54 percent of 55,383 total in the 107 private research universities in the u.s in 2005 trower also said lehigh has a tenure achievement rate of 55 percent which is higher than the other research universities consid ered in a perm state university study in addition she said 7 percent of the total number of faculty at lehigh in 2007 are either profes sors of practice or lecturers there fore not on the tenure track this rate is lower than the na tional rate of 24 percent el-aasser said lehigh has a lot of assistant professors because in the late 1990s and early 21st director funding insufficient for international students by julie stewart the global lehigh report and the popularity of the global union lehigh's largest student organization are signs of efforts by the university community to bring le high to a new level of globalization international student recruitment however is not increasing at a parallel rate bill hunter director of the global union said the difficulty in bringing international students lies not in recruitment but in matriculation he said many potential international students who get accepted do not have the funds to come to lehigh funding is always an issue hunter said j leon washington dean of admissions and financial aid estimated that about one third of foreign students ac cepted at lehigh matriculate he said a small pool of institutional dollars is targeted for international students and there are discussions in progress to increase that amount kofi appiah-nkansah 09 an international student from ghana and vice president of the global union said he decided to come to lehigh after attending the pennsyl vania governor's school for entrepreneurship in summer 2002 appiah-nkansah said most people in ghana are not familiar with lehigh they lehigh don't have a strong reputation for giv ing money appiah-nkansah said he said students in ghana are familiar with lafayette college tufts university oberlin college and williams percent of undergraduate students of international origin
