the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 22 friday november 30 2007 all the lehigh news first alumus to speak at 2008 graduation by andrew daniels williamj amelio 79 president and ceo of lenovo group ltd and lehigh alumnus will speak at lehigh's 140 th commencement ceremony according to a university press release amelio will draw upon his extensive corporate resume and his belief in the power of giving back when addressing more than 1,200 graduates of the class of 2008 amelio's company has annual rev enues of more than 16 billion and is one of the top three computer companies in the world amelio is known in the industry for reshaping the face of modern technol ogy and working to improve the lives of impoverished children in cambodia through caring for cambodia a nonprof it organization founded in 2003 amelio said he is honored to have an opportunity to speak to lehigh students whether it's by bringing better tech nology to people around the world de veloping and coaching budding leaders or offering the chance for an education to underprivileged children amelio said i feel i have an obligation to the principles i learned at this great institution lehigh president alice gast said amelio's success in international business and his dedication to improving the world around him make him an excellent role model for lehigh graduates bill is truly an example of someone who embodies the values we hold close to our hearts at lehigh gast said not only does he recognize the importance of embracing other cultures and countries but he also firmly believes in being a responsible and generous global citizen as someone who sat on the other side of the podium nearly 30 years ago bill will be able to relate to our graduating seniors in a way dropped by caitlin kingsley several charges were dropped against two members of the swim team darren po dolak 09 and mac tichner 09 at a hearing on nov 19 the two men were accused of hosting a party with underage drinking at their home on tay lor street on sept 12 according to sources on the team podolak is still on the swim team and tichner's punishment is still pending it is uncertain if he remains on the team because he is not listed on the team roster podolak and tichner were unavailable for comment according to a nov 20 ar ticle in the morning call po dolak and tichner waived their right to a preliminary hearing on charges of underage drinking and conspiracy to sell or furnish alcohol to minors the prosecutor dismissed charges of corruption of minors reckless endangerment of a minor and violations of two city ordinances including having a disorderly house the article said podolak and tichner will apply for acceler ated rehabilitative disposition a program for first-time non violent offenders that allows defendants to clear their records after completing a probationary period swim team head coach rob herb said in an e-mail he knows the men will deal with the con sequences of their mistakes and they are committed to the process they continue to do what they can to be members of good standing on the team in the athletic department and as well as the university herb said it no students involved in on-campus assault by katie ginda two bethlehem men were arrested and charged with assault nov 18 after beating a bethle hem man along dravo drive and leaving him with serious injuries though the incident occurred on campus no students were involved lehigh chief of police edward shupp said tuesday according to court documents larry russell 21 of 915 n new st bethlehem and kaishif ny zell williams 21 of 536 wyan dotte st bethlehem repeatedly punched and kicked dane olah 21 also of bethlehem just after midnight at a gathering on cam pus no weapons were involved in the incident shupp said shupp did not discuss the identity of the victim but he said russell and williams were the guests of a student russell and williams are not alumni he said vice provost for student af fairs john smeaton issued an e-mail about the event to the campus community nov 19 smeaton said he sent the e-mail because he wanted to inform the community of the incident and dispel rumors that had already begun to surface lehigh police responded to a radio dispatch early morning nov 18 and called an ambulance to the scene according to the af fidavit for probable cause police obtained information about the suspects from witnesses and ap prehended two suspects within minutes of the assault shupp said olah suffered from a lacerated liver and multiple bruises to the head he was taken to st luke's hospital at fountain hill and was kept in guarded condition nov 19 according to an article in the morning call the incident took place the night of the lehigh-lafayette football game and at least four people witnessed the beating according to court documents three witnesses arrived at the po lice department at 6 a.m nov 18 and all three witnesses identified russell and williams as the per sons they had witnessed assault ing the victim the affidavit said the lehigh university police department is leading an ongoing investigation to determine a mo tive the investigation was slower than usual because of thanksgiv ing break smeaton said according to the morning call article russell and williams were called to court before dis trict judge diane repyneck and charged with aggravated assault criminal conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and reckless endangerment of another shupp said both are in northampton county prison under 250,000 and 100,000 bail respectively williams was also charged with making false reports to police he knowingly provided a fake name date of birth and social security number that were later found to be false police said
