the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 18 friday november 9 2007 all the lehigh news first hearing postponed for summer shooting case by kathryn jacobson the preliminary hearing for defendant alberto r melendez jr arrested for firing a gun at michael ritter 08 on july 29 has been postponed until further notice upon his arrest melendez applied for a public defender and the court assigned him attorney holly calantoni of bethlehem as of nov 1 the case was reassigned to lawyer bohdan zelechiwsky of bethlehem zel echiwsky was unavailable for comment but according to his office he just received notice of the case and is waiting to find out the new hearing date according to court docu ments melendez is charged with attempted homicide two counts of aggravated assault simple assault recklessly endangering another person and possession of firearms prohibited and not to be carried without a license investigator frank rossnagle of the bethlehem police depart ment said it is up to the defense attorney's office to decide what will happen to melendez none of these are typical charges rossnagle said ritter said he has mixed emotions now that education's dean search committee an nounced oct 30 its selection of a search firm and the launch of its dean search web site the committee chose r wil liam funk & associates to help find a new permanent dean for the college r william funk & associates has a reputation of recruiting a diverse pool of candidates said anne meltzer dean of the col lege of arts and sciences and chair of the education college dean search committee accord ing to the dean search web site the firm has recruited presidents that serve at the university of miami cornell university syracuse university purdue university and the university of delaware choosing a search firm takes several steps meltzer said first the committee advertised for a search firm several firms sub mitted proposals and the com mittee conducted interviews with selected firms the committee felt r william funk & associ ates would be the best fit for the job meltzer said they had the experience we were looking for in regards to doing searches in the area of higher education as well as an approach and philosophy we agreed with meltzer said r william funk & associates believes in working in collabora tion meltzer said the firm will help the com mittee identify and communicate with dean candidates r william funk & associates will be in charge of collecting applications and resumes for the position and it will also ensure candidate anonymity survey on greek life evaluates perceptions by martina russial the office of fraternity and sorority affairs is conducting a survey in order to gauge com munity observations and percep tions of greek life on campus the survey is part of a period ic assessment of how perceptions have changed as higher education profes sionals we are taught to conduct assessments on a regular basis so that we have honest and con structive feedback to make con tinued improvements as need ed said tiffany showalter a greek life coordinator involved in the project the office of fraternity and sorority affairs implemented the strengthening greek life process three years ago the office wants to analyze how perceptions have changed since the initiative's implementation said director of residence life tim wilkinson wilkinson said the survey will be available to the public after it is processed showalter and wilkinson said there will be no punishment im posed on the greek community if the survey results are negative this survey is just to see where the office and greek organizations should go next wilkinson said the office is fully interested in taking steps to further educational standing promote philanthropy and show as competition grows undergrads rush to get master's by elizabeth callahan college is said to be the best four years of a person's life or is it six years or even nine years as the number of students attending graduate school rises the need to extend education past the four-year bachelor's degree is becoming increasingly evident the master's degree or any graduate degree today is sort of yesterday's bachelor's degree said j gary lutz interim dean of the college of educa tion thirty 40 50 years ago it was a very special thing to have a college degree and that put you re ally at the top of the competitive heap nationally the number of students pursuing master's degrees has doubled since 1980 and grown 150 percent since 1970 according to the national center for educational statistics the number of graduate students at lehigh has remained at about 2,000 students for the past 30 years according to the office of institutional research but the number of lehigh students going directly to graduate school has risen in 1995 19 percent of the graduating class pur sued higher education directly after graduation which grew to 36 percent in 2005 in 2006 the num ber dropped to 26 percent but the trend is upward according to the career services placement survey lutz said higher enrollment in master's degree programs indicates that although an undergraduate degree is important it is commonplace according to the national center for education statistics design by lindsey sutkus the number of students obtaining master's degrees in the u.s
