the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 14 friday october 26 2007 all the lehigh news first advancement vice president replacement leaves post by gaby saade â– a month and a half after devlin's resigna tion there is no perma nent replacement the interim vice president of advancement john norton will leave nov 1 and the advi sory board is seeking a perma nent candidate for the position kathryn humphreys assis tant vice president of corporate and foundation relations and career services will serve as the new interim vice president of advancement from nov 1 until december when a new candidate is named norton was initially ap pointed to take over as interim vice president after a month and a half he decided to leave lehigh and humphreys was selected by president alice gast to lead the advancement team until a new candidate is chosen the interims replaced bon nie devlin whose resigned in late september norton was exploring the possibility of relocating to california before taking over as interim he said the move will allow him to move closer to his daughter and 2-year-old granddaughter norton has accepted the po sition as assistant vice president of institutional advancement at pomona college in claremont calif and will oversee mdi leaning in linderman b&w photo by james hughes two buddhist monks worked on a sand mandala from oct 22 until today in honor of the upcoming visit of the 14th dalai lama in july the mandala will be dismantled today greeks chapters suffer when seniors move out by autumn gould as more students involved in greek life move off campus their senior year decreased in volvement in the greek system is becoming an issue said dave polakoff president of the greek alumni council greek members alumni ad ministrators and faculty discussed senior involvement at the greek alumni council's fall meeting sunday peter wolle 53 a member of kappa alpha fraternity who sat on the greek alumni council discussion panel said the loss of senior leadership is a problem the accreditation process causes the houses to be full leav ing juniors and sophomores to run the houses wolle said and that is a real problem wolle said students have the option of living off campus only if their house is full living off campus is a privi lege not a right wolle said if a chapter does not fill 90 percent occupancy with its sophomore and junior members seniors will have to move back to the house brittany grier 08 panhellenic president said her sorority alpha omicron pi has been over occu pancy for a few years grier said students plan ahead for moving off campus students sign leases for senior year during the first semester of their sophomore year grier said that's how the lease system works here you need to do it early to get your choice of houses it has become a cycle and it's impossible to make seniors live in the sorority or fraternity house because they are bound to a rental property polakoff proposed giving posi tions within the chapter to broth ers or sisters living off campus there is no reason that the community service chair has to live in the house polakoff said fraternity social probation extended by maxie mccoy eight fraternities are currently on social probation through the end of the semester said tim wilkinson director of fraternity and sorority affairs the fraternities on social probation are alpha tau omega beta theta pi chi phi delta tau delta kappa alpha lambda chi alpha phi sig ma kappa and theta xi before this year probation pe riods were shorter and chapters on probation could not hold reg istered events said garrett gray 09 president of theta xi this year the probation time period covers the entire semester and chapters may hold a few registered events if they conduct internal educational sessions said david cohen president of the interfraternity council these sessions include risk management safe social event planning and planning standards wilkinson said it seems like the school is doing what they can to choke the party scene gray said you are more careful when you're on probation but they are putting so many frats on probation it is just making the party scene much more muffled some chapters dislike the longer probation periods because they leave a higher chance of get ting a second offense cohen said he said there has been no change in the social policy for fraternities at lehigh only more overfilled cars led to citations after tailgates saturday by larissa staszkiw thirteen lehigh students received citations for underage drinking when lower saucon valley police stopped three vehicles driving from goodman sta dium saturday police said two trucks and one car were stopped on moun tain drive at the corner of seidersville road in low er saucon township police said police stopped a pickup truck with passengers in the bed at 11:35 a.m on mountain drive south the truck was speeding police said six of the seven passengers were underage and had been drinking they were cited for underage drinking police said according to the police the driver was cited for permitting passengers in the open bed of his truck police said police stopped another vehicle at 1:38 p.m satur day on mountain drive north for obstruction to the driver's view three passengers were underage and had been drinking they were cited for underage drinking police said the driver was cited for obstruction to driver view and mechanism police stopped a second pickup truck at 1:54 p.m saturday on mountain drive north for a moving violation the truck had five people in the cab and five people in the bed the car was leaving the football game police said four students were underage and had been drink ing police said they were cited for
