brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 10 friday october 5 2007 all the lehigh news first vice president bonnie devlin leaves position by gaby saade bonnie devlin resigned from her position after eight years as vice president of advancement at lehigh devlin said she is exploring a number of interesting new career opportunities elsewhere while president gast could not comment on dev lin's future or her decision to resign she said via e-mail bonnie devlin is a recognized leader in her field and has a great deal to offer an institution devlin's husband steven devlin resigned from his post as vice provost of institutional research earlier this year after being charged with several counts regarding soliciting sex from minors devlin served as the chief fiindraising professional for lehigh according to gast the advancement staff builds the university's endowment to support scholarships financial aid academic programs faculty efforts student life and athletics i was able to work closely with many donors to en courage their philanthropic support to broaden lehigh's donor base and to plan and launch the current cam paign which has achieved 335 million or 67 percent of its goal for new endowed scholarships endowed chairs facilities and annual giving devlin said via e-mail at gasfs request devlin will be available to assist lehigh during the transition we have not yet needed to call upon her but are appreciative of her willingness to help us out as needed gast said devlin expressed her gratitude to the lehigh community for me it was a privilege to get to know so many lehigh alumni donors and staff and to help them make their hopes and dreams for lehigh become a reality devlin said i hope that my successor will cherish these folks too and will rely on all the accomplished dedicated and focused staff in the advancement office who truly go all out to serve lehigh well i wish them all the best john norton assistant vice president of advance ment is temporarily taking over devlin's position hopes for green campus bring groups together by autumn gould over 50 students administra tors faculty and staff members met monday for the first green summit a meeting geared toward making le high environmentally responsible alice kodama 10 a member of green action organized the event to bring the community together the main goal of green summit was to have everyone interested on campus in one room for two hours kodama said and at the very least go away with a contact sheet of everyone at the meeting and how to get in touch with them it's all about networking jess engle 08 said one of green action's goals for the academic year is to ask president alice gast to sign the talloires declaration which com mits the school to ten steps that pro mote environmental responsibility engle said 300 other presidents of higher education institutions signed the declaration kodama said she does not expect it to be difficult to get gast to sign the declaration but she believes it will be the first stepping-stone to doing some thing at lehigh attendance included both individ ual students and student groups nathan punwani 09 president b&wphoto by chris chew of the college democrats became involved with green action for both personal and political reasons i'm friends with kodama we both live in green house but also all of the members of the college demo crats are passionate about environmen tal issues punwani said we are try ing to be more active about issues not just talking about the politics of them we want to make it more relevant to people's lives so they can connect members of the lehigh faculty also attended the meeting with several rep resentative from offices on campus dale kochard executive direc students and faculty members discuss making lehigh more environmentally responsible at the green summit monday representatives from administrative offices and student groups shared ideas on creating a green campus search begins for university relations vp by matt stayman the university is searching for a new vice presi dent of university relations who will act as the chief spokesperson for the school a committee led by dean of athletics joe ster rett will work with a consulting and executive search firm to fill the position assistant vice president of university communi cations tracey moran is serving as the interim vice president of university relations since brad drexler stepped down from the position during the summer drexler's decision to leave was due to a desire to increase his focus on marketing activities according to a quote from president alice gast in a may 2007 article on the university relations web site the responsibilities of the department cover a broad range of issues moran said the title of vice president might be misleading sterrett said because there is no president of uni versity relations the vice president is the head of the department and an integral piece of the lehigh puzzle sterrett said it's a senior level position that reports directly to the president sterrett said for the most critical kinds of issues this will be the chief spokesperson of the university creating clear and consistent mes sages that are honest and accurate portrayals of what is going on at lehigh university is a critical part of the position basically moran said our role is to tell the lehigh story fully to all different people whether it be faculty staff students internal folks or it could be the alumni and other members of the lehigh community in order to tell the lehigh story university rela tions employees specialize in strategic marketing targeted media relations internal and external com munications graphic design and web design moran said although the vice president is not expected to have expertise in all of these fields he or she should have an understanding of and appreciation for all of these areas sterrett said design is necessary to communicate point of view whether it be through print or on one of the 22,000 web pages for which university relations is responsible she said with a lehigh alumni publication in hand ster rett said for example
