the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 6 friday september 21 2007 all the lehigh news first college fosters new approach to academics by lauren martiello â– transfer of faculty to south mountain college puts strain on some academic departments approved last spring south mountain col lege is in its inaugural semester smc is designed for students who are inter ested in learning in a cross-disciplinary fashion the 21 smc students this fall range from freshmen to graduate students more than half of the students live in taylor college rushing the program's implementation for fall took a toll on other academic departments professor janice mattern said while participat ing in the smc program mattern said she will be unable to teach in the international relations department don't get me wrong mattern said i am 100 percent behind smc and i have been since the very beginning but it has cost the ir department lehigh must figure out how to replace depart ment faculty mattern said students are enjoying their experiences within smc laura kelly 09 said the interaction with her professors influenced her decision to enroll i heard about the closer teacher-student relationship which is one reason why i was inter ested in smc kelly said and all the teachers are really excited which makes it a great experi ence for me deborah streahle 10 was thinking about transferring to barnard college but stayed at le high because of the smc program i lived in m&m last year streahle said and this is so much better it's like living in a big bethlehem mayor serves for a cure b&wphoto by katlaymen bethlehem mayor john callahan worked as a bartender sept 17 at starters riverport to raise money for the american cancer society all tips from his two-hour shift were donated to the organization senate looks to improve campus with year goals by maxie mccoy â– student senate to focus on the environment safety student advocacy and facilities this year the student senate held a retreat at lake harmony pa to discuss so lutions for problems on campus this past weekend the senate and sharon basso associate vice provost and dean of students discussed topics for campus improvement two days of discussion and brain storming led to the creation of four campus life improvement projects clips the senate will tackle this year greener lehigh safety student advocacy and facilities and spaces said clark cohen 08 president of the senate i'm really excited about these clips cohen said we're going to team up with clubs and get adminis trative backing to ensure success greener lehigh hopes existing clubs and the administration will work together to make changes for a more environmentally-conscious campus said divya nayar 10 parlia mentarian of the senate ideas for short-term changes in clude establishing better recycling plans and working with bethlehem to ensure recycling is properly disposed cohen said bethlehem approves new science building by charlie gimber the bethlehem planning commission granted the university initial approval on sep 13 to build a 55 million science building on the lawn in front of mag innes hall the new building to be called steps science technology environment policy and society should play a prominent role in lehigh's plan to im prove future environmental studies at the university although the initial approval has been granted there is a great deal of paperwork to go through be fore construction begins said anthony corallo asso ciate vice president of facilities services and campus planning we have received zoning approval from the city but the rest of the approval will take a while to get through corallo said we are still a while away from actual construction the university faced several problems in gaining approval the rev edith b roberts senior pastor of st peter's evangelical lutheran church on vine street brought up an issue concerning the shadows of the new building during the hearing pastor roberts voiced a concern that the new building would cast a shadow on the rose window during the easter service corallo said tests were done to evaluate the shadow's effect our architects performed a shadow simulation and determined that in the end the shadow would actually not affect the service corallo said roberts said the church is still concerned about the building aside from the shadows i feel as though this building is really going to make things more con gested roberts said students will drive in order to get to classes in this new building the traffic volume has to go up many students agree the new building will lead to increased traffic congestion traffic around campus is already pretty bad sara maclntyre 09 said i think this new building is really going to make things even more congested roberts is also concerned about the increased construction we're already in-between the construction of broughal middle school and now lehigh's soon-to be new science building roberts said some students are worried the construction of the new building will take away the enjoyment of the lawn the maginnes front lawn is a great place to re lax nik alexiades
