zambelli the bethlehem planning commis sion will announce its decision con cerning planning permission for the new environmental initiative build ing on thursday the new science building is part of lehigh's new science technolo gy environment policy and society initiative - steps steps will cost 85 million according to the lehigh web site the 130,000 square foot green building located at the corner of west packer avenue and vine street will house classrooms offices and undergraduate science labs in chemistry life science and environ mental science alec bodzin associate professor of education and human services said the new building is a great idea the new building will be a signa ture emphasis for lehigh and its en vironmental initiative bodzin said this building will be one of the few places on campus where faculty and students will be involved in interdis ciplinary environmental collabora tions across the college of arts and sciences rceas p.c rossin col lege of engineering and applied sci ence and the college of education bodzin said housing experts in the building from the science the environmental risk and policy and the education departments will help provide a well-rounded education experience for environmental sci ence students peter zeitler professor of earth and environmental studies said it would be difficult to recycle wil liams hall which hosts the earth and environmental sciences department it's a nice tag line but in reality what one should do depends on the financial resources available the state of the buildings that might be recycled and the goals that you as pire to zeitler said in our partic ular case the building we have wil courtesy of lehigh university the plans for the new science building include preserving part of maginnes lawn lehigh police honored with accreditation award â– lupd becomes second college force in state to receive prize by charlie gimber the lehigh police depart ment received an accreditation award for its proficient day to day work from the pennsylva nia chiefs of police associa tion this summer the lupd is the second university police force in the state to receive such an award we're obviously very proud of it chief of police edward shupp said it was a great group effort accreditation is available to all police departments in pennsylvania not just those at universities there are many standards that the state of pennsylvania sets forth and we managed to meet nearly all of them shupp said the accreditation confirms that the lupd has made improvements accreditation status means b&wphoto by clark lampen lupd successfully completed professional objectives and improved its performance as a team the accreditation process took three years the accreditation award required the department to meet 123 standards after the lupd met the accreditation standards the force held two mock assessments the next step in the ac creditation process included a two-day on-site evaluation of lehigh police department is one of only two university police departments to receive this accreditation award from the pennsylvania chiefs of police association steel shortage delays casino construction by jessica armbruster in early august representa tives from sands beth works appeared before the pennsyl vania gaming control board to announce that the opening of the casino will be delayed from mid-2008 until early 2009 the delay is caused by a lack of steel available to con struct the casino complex the elaborate complex needs 16,000 tons of steel for construction according to the morn ing call the opening of the 600 million complex will be pushed into 2009 because demolition crews are having a difficult time plowing down the buildings that once made up the bethlehem steel mill the complex includes a ca sino with 3,000 slot machines a 300-room hotel a shopping mall and an events center the complex will also fea ture a monorail and a national museum of industrial history construction of the casino is expected to receive more tax revenue than the former bethlehem steel and create many new jobs the site of bethlehem steel has buildings that date back to the late 1800s removal of these buildings is another reason for the delay of the grand opening of the casino in addition to the cost to build the casino resort the pennsylvania gaming control board implements a casino host fee this fee is expected to be 8.7 million annually seth moglen professor of english and director of the hu manities center organized the south side initiative along with professor of history john pettegrew the south side initiative will help use lehigh's re sources to teach not only the students faculty and staff but also the residents of bethle hem about the development of the casino complex the project will bring to gether the university commu nity the people of bethlehem government officials experts and developers the south side initiative also strives to get the citizens of bethlehem and lehigh stu dents together to have their voices heard about what they want to happen with the sands bethworks project students and citizens are encouraged to voice opinions to help shape the development of the casino complex students and citizens of bethlehem need to get in volved moglen said they need to know what is being proposed they also need to work closely so we get
