the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 44 friday april 13 2007 all the lehigh news first admissions dean chosen following yearlong search by olivier lewis associate news editor j leon washington assistant vice chancellor of student affairs and enrollment management at uni versity of california davis was chosen as the new dean of admissions and financial aid president alice gast and provost mohamed el aasser selected washington out of a group of three top candidates last week el-aasser said el-aasser said washington has dealt with all aspects of admission during his 28-year career and that washington's breadth of knowledge made him win out over the other two candidates washington is truly someone who knows the landscape of admissions in terms of the demo graphics el-aasser said he is clearly someone who knows the business inside-out although washington's last job was at a large state school el-aasser said he has also worked at other smaller lehigh-size institutions washington will begin at lehigh on june 1 2007 when selection for the class of 2012 begins when i first started investigating lehigh el aasser said the challenging great minds inspir ing great imaginations tag line that appears on the web site really spoke to me i realized that my values and those of lehigh align perfectly according to a lehigh press release wash ington said he was honored to be chosen to lead lehigh's admissions process el-aasser said washington will work toward improving particularly need-based financial aid packages and recruiting students from all over the united states and abroad the whole environment for education is also changing el-aasser said we are trying to com pete on a national level we would like to be able to reach out to the west coast and the middle states and not only the east coast and the like one year into presidency gast reflects on her term by katie ginda senior news writer ask president alice gast to share some of her personal highlights since arriving at lehigh and she does not mention professional achievements instead she'll talk about taking her daughter rebecca to the lehigh-la fayette cross-country meet in septem ber or sitting in the front row of grace hall at a wrestling match with her son david gast calls her first eight months a good beginning despite how busy she's been and said her family's sup port has only made it better personally she said it's very gratifying to have your family happy and well-settled and enjoying lehigh as much as i am so we've had a great time experiencing everything gast has met and exceeded high expectations said provost mohamed el-aasser by taking an interest in the university and becoming an involved and visible figure on campus but more importantly gast has taken the time to fully understand the university and its culture she has committed herself to mak ing sure that she not only understands the intellect of the university but higher level than what she inherited gast's vision almost a full academic year after arriving at lehigh gast feels she is prepared to move lehigh the right direction president alice gast who began her term last fall will be inaugurated as lehigh's 13th president today campus bias signs taken from uc front lawn by desiree annunziato news writer two signs that were part of a campaign to make lehigh aware of discrimination against minorities on campus display were stolen monday from their spot on the uc front lawn causing student controversy and speculation of the theft's motives sara bailin 09 who helped organize the stories campaign and set up the display said about seven or eight people helped organize the campaign and work on the display the signs were put up on sunday at midnight for display through tuesday but two of the signs were taken monday night the first sign that was stolen read you reek of jew the second said she looks like a whore bailin stressed these were personal quotes and were taken di rectly from stories submitted by lehigh students about their experiences on campus she said the quotes were intended to be offensive and shocking to show other students the types of bias that exist at lehigh students from global citizenship the movement and spectrum were involved with the campaign cath erine etter 08 who was also one of the organizers said the deans from all three colleges the president the provost and the admissions office were informed before the signs were displayed and they were all supportive of the campaign etter said the four signs were placed on the uc front lawn and the first three involved quotes taken from stu dents personal experiences the third board and remaining sign that was left said what's the faggot doing here the fourth board just said react there was also a plaque next to the signs explaining the campaign and the purpose of the boards etter said oftentimes we hear these stories in our private circles but because of the nature of the campus climate they are never heard on a broader scale etter said that the campaign was also based on the truth campaign's approach to raising awareness about tobacco the truth campaign uses blunt methods of display to show that harsh effects of smoking vice provost john smeaton sent a campus-wide e-mail tuesday describing the stories campaign and informing students and faculty of
