the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 35 tuesday february 27 2007 all the lehigh news first parking problem pits students vs officials by john flenders special to the brown and white katelyn noderer 09 has some serious parking issues living less than an hour from lehigh noderer wanted to have her car on campus to go home whenever she wanted during her senior year of high school she asked lehigh students she met at parties if she could bring her car to campus as a freshman they told her she could they also told her not to worry about parking tickets they said tickets don't mat ter noderer said i believed everyone noderer didn't know unpaid parking tickets are charged to her bursar bill she thought the school didn't care about parking when she came to lehigh as a freshman noderer didn't register her car but according to lehigh's parking policy parking unregistered vehicles on campus is a violation the policy states all vehicles operated or parked on lehigh property either regularly or tem porarily must be registered with the parking services office and must display a parking permit noderer received ticket after ticket by winter break she had accumulated seven tickets she didn't pay any of them while on break she received b&wphoto by mike ilnyckyj a letter from lehigh sternly warn ing her that continued infractions would result in loss of parking privileges during the next aca demic year finally she realized those tickets mattered they weren't kidding about them she said noderer started leaving her car at home then she learned that parking off campus is out of lehigh's jurisdiction she brought her car back and parked off campus but she soon received a ticket from the bethlehem park ing authority in her eyes bpa tickets are real tickets so she paid it these cars located off-campus run the risk of being ticketed if they do not have permits the problem is just as bad on campus where officials say they collect 275,000 a year in fines increased fees force vagina show to move by danielle gorman news writer because of increasing rental fees to perform at the zoellner arts center the co-producers of the vagina monologues made the decision early last semester to boycott zoellner and instead perform in lam berton hall the initial estimate was 2,000 each night to perform at zoellner which included rental of baker hall ushers box office staff and lighting and sound crews this price is approximately 1,000 more than last year's fee and would force the group to pay an ex tra 3,000 for the three nights of production shelly harris 09 who along with alex milspaw 07 co-produced the show said the price agreed upon last year was increased from the initial estimate once the group committed to using zoellner our boycott is based partially on the treatment we received at zoellner har ris said last year once the arrangements were done they changed their mind and charged us more at the last minute this year we didn't want to deal with the bureau cracy of it who knew if come january they'd change their minds again harris also said last year was the first time in five years zoellner charged the vagina monologues for use of baker this strongly upset us so alex and i made the decision to make a point about zoell ner and this unfair treatment harris said liz scofield director of zoellner said the producers of the vagina monologues did not explicitly ask to use zoell ner this year as far as i know all they asked for was to hold audi tions here which we did for free scofield said it's hard to make everyone happy in this situation the costs are prohibitive because we have crew costs and also have to factor in wear and tear on the set depreciation and ticket stock scofield said zoellner de pends on donors and rentals as well as university funds it just hurts that we can't support something that we think is really important scofield said i would love to have them back i love the vagina monologues but milspaw said the group didn't use zoellner for auditions we didn't even hold audi tions in zoellner but in the women's center milspaw said we used zoellner may the movement faces declining attendance by stephanie pace news writer attendance at the weekly movement meetings has de creased significantly over the past year but a group repre sentative said he didn't think decreased attendance would hurt the groups goals calvinjohn smiley 08 political chairperson of the black student union and member of the movement said the organization has 300 members according to it's face book group but only 25 are dedicated members devin dobson 07 a co-founder of the movement said decreased attendance hasn't hurt the group's progress i'm not really surprised about members not coming like they used to dobson said but things are still getting done smiley doesn't think decreased attendance means the students don't care about the issues i think it's just an apathetic campus smiley said it's not that they're not smart or politically active it just takes a lot to get them out i think it's a generational thing not just a lehigh thing you don't see college protests like you did in the 605 alta thornton interim dean of students said she isn't too worried about the situation yet i don't think it's much of a problem thornton said i still see them as a group that could make some sustainable change there was a natural shrink and then you're left with a bunch of people who are really passionate thornton added that this is natural group behavior b&wphoto by mike ilnyckyj students talk
