the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 30 friday february 9 2007 all the lehigh news first prof questions research focus by andrew daniels â– despite loss of popular professor administrators say lehigh balances focus on research and teaching news writer behind door 454 of rauch business center is an office lined with plaques and certificates honoring its recipient's excellence and dedication to teaching next semester the recipient of those teaching awards and plaques will be gone stephen l liedtka assistant professor in the depart ment of accounting was denied tenure at the end of 2005 he is now finishing his last year at lehigh and is moving down route 378 to desales university to be at a place that he says remains true to its focus on students from 2003 to 2005 liedtka was ranked first in teaching and fourth in research out of 44 faculty members in the college of business and economics he said when it came time to be evaluated for tenure he entered a long and rigorous process of assessment eventually the accounting department voted 7-0 and the cbe promotions and tenure committee voted 4-1 both in his favor when the process moved to provost mohamed el-aas ser however liedtka said he was denied a recommenda tion for tenure due to his apparent lack of research work after el-aasser's decision the board of trustees sealed liedtka's fate at lehigh for liedtka an award-winning teacher the move raises the question of whether the university is giving a higher pri ority to research shifting its emphasis away from teaching the rules and procedures document of the lehigh fac ulty states that excellence in teaching research scholarship and service to the university are criteria for reappointment turkish club sponsors talk on genocide stephanie pace justin mccarthy responds to former lecturer peter balakian's view on the armenian and ottoman conflict news writer a speaker denied the conflict between the ot tomans and the armenians which many call a genocide and said it was just a relocation to a full auditorium in whitaker tuesday night whether you like the relocations or don't like the relocations the ottomans had a very good rea son for doing it said justin mccarthy author and professor from the university of louisville in his lecture tuesday night mccarthy spoke about why the armenians were moved by the turkish people during world war i there was some debate around the funding for mccarthy's lecture the issue started last year when an armenian student wrote a letter to the lehigh patriot about the armenian genocide it ap peared on the front page and declared the genocide as a fact the turkish student club then wrote a response to the lehigh patriot that also appeared on the front page contesting it being called genocide this prompted the visiting lecturers commit tee to bring peter balakian the author of black dog of fate and a new york times bestselling author on the armenian genocide to speak on the subject during balakian's speech the turkish club held a protest outside following balakian's lecture the turkish club decided to bring mccarthy to speak from the turk ish point of view john bright a graduate student and president of the visiting lecturers committee said his group did not think mccarthy was an ap propriate speaker because mccarthy's view on the subject does not coincide with the international students weary of hospital choice b&w photo by james grebler some students think st luke's hospital provides information concerning students admitted for alcohol poisoning to lehigh but the students believe lehigh valley hospital does not police and the dean of students office said neither hospital releases the information because of privacy laws lehigh selects lender based on quality never incentives by rachel sachs â– some loan offices get kick backs from lenders lehigh representatives however say it doesn't happen here news writer when students apply for finan cial aid at lehigh the office of financial aid recommends a list of five lenders out of a pool of 40 recently an investigation into the relationships between loan providers and the colleges and universities that recommend these companies to their students has been opened by attorney general andrew m cuomo of new york according to a new york times article published last week representatives from the office of financial aid say this is not the case at lehigh and their loan rec ommendations are not biased we do have our frequently used loan list that we give to students said linda bell lehigh's director of financial aid some of them have grown from places we did a lot of student loan business with however this list is not based on any incentives the university could receive she said there are two types of loans that lehigh offers there are govern ment backed loans such as federal stafford loans which are paid by the students after graduation and the parent loan for undergraduate students which are paid by a stu dent's parents additionally there are private or alternative loans that come from private lenders lehigh currently recommends five private lending institutions to their students these include the college board sallie mac key education resources citibank and bank one the financial aid office has his see research page 2 see
