nieuwkerk months after winter's official start snow accumulated for the first time this past week while snow only means colder walks for students those keeping lehigh running must step into gear new dean sets goals for cbe by katie ginda senior news writer lehigh university's choice for its new dean of the college of business and economics is a philadelphia ea gles fan a pianist and opera enthusiast and a pennsylvania native this summer paul brown will re sign as professor of accounting at new york university's stern school of busi ness he will no longer serve as associ ate dean of executive mba programs or as academic director of the trium global executive mba program he's trading his 28-year career at nyu stern and an office with a view of the empire state building to transfer to lehigh he will relieve interim cbe dean thomas hyclak and begin a new deanship there's a point when you decide ts this what i want to do or am i go ing to take on the next wonderful chal lenge brown said in this situation there's no question the moon and the stars were aligned and i'm ready for something else brown said he was very satisfied with the news of his appointment i was ecstatic quite frankly he said i had a sense early on that it felt good that it felt right i am so excited about getting to know the uni versity the enticement is really three pronged faculty students and alumni the lehigh students i know are alums they're a loyal fierce crowd their allegiance is so helpful on so many levels that it's hard to define le high students are positively aggressive they know how to work hard and play hard the school doesn't fool around there's lots of no-nonsense brown is especially excited to work with the faculty he said i will be blessed with a lot of great dean was diversity advocate by julie stewart news writer michelle samuels associate dean for student development left her position at lehigh this week to serve as the director of special projects at the university of maryland university college tues day was her last day as associate dean samuels oversaw the areas of student leadership multicultural affairs student ac tivities community service student programming and student center facilities and operations john smeaton vice president of student affairs credits samuels for making a variety of contribu tions to student life at lehigh smeaton said samuels has been instrumental in efforts to promote diversity at lehigh through involvement with initiatives such as the diversity leadership committee and this fall's campus cli mate survey samuels also did extensive work with the office of multicultural affairs she served as assistant dean of multicultural affairs when she joined lehigh's staff in 2000 and was promoted to associate dean for student devel opment in 2002 thomas dubreuil associate dean of campus living said samuels wrote the original draft of the student affairs diversity pledge which described the division of student affairs commitment to valu ing diversity on and off campus she has really taken a lead in diversity issues dubreuil said samuels also played a key role in the develop ment of student leadership programs at lehigh about five years ago samuels and allison gulati assistant dean of leadership programs put together the proposal for the office of student leadership de velopment together they worked to develop pro grams such as leadership lehigh and the greek movement says diversity response not enough by danielle gorman news writer members of the movement who met in the lam berton great room tuesday brainstormed plans for the upcoming year as well as critiqued president gast's reply to last year's formal list of demands last december members of the movement sub mitted a proposal to gast in hopes of promoting di versity at lehigh in three sectors academic financial and social their list of demands included offering more scholarships to minorities facilitating new groups on campus getting a new leader in the lgbtqa room incorporating diversity issues into class syllabi and creating a required freshman seminar on diversity however gast's reply on a diversity web site fell short members said tuesday although gast listed diversity-promoting orga nizations and activities in her response members questioned whether all the efforts mentioned remain in existence in addition movement members complained about meaningless statistics that held no context at lehigh we need to point out what percentage of that response is irrelevant said catherine etter 08 while drafting a response to gast's reply mem bers focused on how to promote diversity in a more tangible manner than gast's plans the proposal will include a plan to reform fresh man orientation to be geared towards diversity and is defined in a variety of ways not simply based on race alone moreover members hope to win financial aid for minority students that won't be affected by scholar ship money a student receives i think gast truly believes we're doing a good thing lara boffey 09 said but she doesn't know how to help the largest concern with gast's response accord ing to the movement is its lack of concreteness members seek to question whether the programs for diversity lehigh has put in place are sustainable members are concerned about funding for these programs and what plans are in place for
