the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 25 tuesday january 23 2007 all the lehigh news first slots approved for bethlehem by olivier lewis associate news editor the pennsylvania gaming control board approved a gambling license for sands bethworks gaming on dec 20 clearing the way for a casino to be built on the former bethlehem steel site with this license sands plans to build a movie complex high-end boutiques and a hotel in addition to the casino although the casino will have slot machines the gam bling license does not permit card games dale kochard executive director of community and regional affairs said other projects separate from sands will include a media and arts center by arts quest and a national museum of industrial history funded by the smithsonian institution kochard who is lehigh's spokesperson for community affairs said lehigh is sup portive of the project to see the development of that rotted steel facility be built up into something new he said that's going to be very posi tive for bethlehem positive for lehigh the 1,600 acres east of the sands site are also going to be developed in a separate commercial project according to kochard it looks like we are well on our way to getting most of it redeveloped he said within the next few weeks sands will likely begin demolishing former steel build ings to make way for a 300-room hotel and the casino the morning call reported according to douglas harbach spokes person for the pennsylvania gaming con trol board the casino will have 5,000 slot machines when it opens in july 2008 thomas hyclak interim dean of the college of business and economics said i think the university has an interest in seeing b&wphoto by bj shepard economic development occur in the sur rounding neighborhood we haven't had any difficulty recruit ing students in the last few years but in the past the nature of the community around us - low income the perception of crime - does have an effect on decisions of people to enroll students react to slots cara diorio 07 president of student senate said she thinks lehigh is in a hard position crow fraternity loses house by lindsay mover editor in chief members of the alpha chi rho fraternity must move out of their house on the hill by jan 24 because the fraternity failed to reach 90 per cent occupancy for three straight semesters vice provost john smeaton said on wednesday although crow was thought to have reached the required occupancy level smeaton said the fraternity knowingly submitted a list of spring 2007 house residents on dec 8 that included four non-initiated brothers who do not count toward the 90 per cent mark according to the occupancy policy greek houses on campus that do not house enough members to reach 90 percent occupancy for three consecu tive semesters lose housing privileges the policy gives houses until the tenth day of the third semester to reach the mark and a final grace period for any houses that remain un der-occupancy this grace period was extended to dec 8 last semester for crow and three other fraternities we received information last week that explicitly stipulated that they submitted falsified informa tion to meet the standard smeaton said it's very disappointing this is antithetical to the core values of the institution smeaton said the university does review the lists of house residents sub mitted but the system is not foolproof we will be considering additional steps we can take with both the chap ters and their national offices to re duce the likelihood of this sort of situ ation in the future smeaton said the fraternity will now undergo hearings within the office of student conduct for charges of falsifying re cords and if found responsible could face disciplinary sanctions crow may remain a recognized non-residential fraternity at lehigh pending the out come of the disciplinary process we're like 50-50 right now on keeping the chapter if that's an op tion said joe regensburg 07 president of crow i've heard mixed emotions chris mulvihill assistant dean of students for student conduct said he is still investigating the situation if the brothers of crow express their frustration by hanging a whatever sign from their balcony last week gunshots fired near brodhead by madelyn king assistant news editor two allentown men were arrested after shots were fired around 1:50 a.m last saturday near brodhead house according to chief of police edward shupp a bike officer on morton street was talking to a group of individuals when he saw two males firing a gun shupp said the officer heard three shots fired but no one was injured actually a bullet came really close to him shupp said after the officer saw the men fire several rounds he pursued them on foot police said additional lehigh police came for backup the police responded and stopped a car in pursuit two 21-year-old males james sims jr and martin lafond were inside the car police found the two men in possession of a 9 mm handgun shupp said shupp confirmed the handgun in the car was stolen from a police officer last august in st clair pa shupp did not want to comment any further on the stolen handgun because the incident is still un der investigation by the city since it happened in the city's jurisdiction we handed it over to them he said bethlehem police were unavailable for comment by press time according to the morning call one officer's report said the gun did not appear to have been fired the men were both charged with receiving stolen property criminal conspiracy and carrying a firearm without a license the men were transported to northampton county prison shupp said shupp said the city is still investigating the shoot ing and stolen gun he advised students to be cautious especially at night see slots page 3 see crow page 5 see shooting page 2 mbssnsmwsm students attend winter study programs wrestling team beats cornell in upset see costa rican study abroad photos online bw.lehigh.edu
