the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 24 friday december 8 2006 all the lehigh news first city police investigate rape by katy jacobson assistant news editor police are investigating the alleged rape of a 19 year-old female student at an off-campus party early saturday morning police said according to the woman's report she left friday night with friends to go to an off-campus party at a house belonging to students her friends knew police said while at the party the woman said she began talk ing to a male acquaintance she recognized from cam pus police said the woman said at some point during the night the same man followed her when she went to the bath room and allegedly tried to have sex with her police said the woman said no but the man continued to put a condom on and force sexual intercourse according to police police said there was some use of force but that it was not aggravated or severe though there was some pushing the woman did not initially report the incident because she said she was scared and because the male student was a friend of her friend's according to police the woman said she was encouraged to report the incident to the police and visit the hospital after she met with the student group break the silence on sunday after reporting the incident the male student heard through the woman's friends that she was upset and he tried to apologize saying he did not hear her say no police said police said no charges have been brought as of yet but the incident is under investigation police said incidents assistant news editor early indications show that more than 40 percent of lehigh's campus community took the campus climate sur vey said mark ironside exec utive director of business ser vices and chair of the survey team of the university diversity leadership committee ironside said according to rankin & associates a nationally recognized consult ing group that put the survey together this is one of the best response rates their company has seen sue rankin one of the consultants lehigh has worked with on the project said a response rate of 30 percent or higher is considered successful ironside said they had hoped to achieve that percent age or higher and were pleased the university surpassed that target the campus should feel really good about these num bers ironside said he said he was happy with the level of student participa tion on this survey as the survey results are shared with the community and we work toward creating and implementing a plan for lehigh's future we hope that every member of the commu nity participates in that effort ironside said ultimately we want to create an environment at lehigh where everyone can see themselves and everyone can thrive provost names top three picks for cbe dean by elizabeth callahan â– candidates to visit lehigh provost hopes to have new dean in place by fall semester news editor three final candidates for the dean of the college of business and economics will visit lehigh for on-campus interviews in the next two weeks said provost mohammed el-aasser el-aasser said they hope to have a new dean in place by fall 2007 at the latest the three final candidates are paul brown associate dean at the stern business school at new york university david stewart former associate dean and current chair of marketing at ucla and charles early dean of the national university of singapore brown will visit lehigh on dec 12 and 13 stewart on dec 14 and 15 and early on dec 18 and 20 while on campus each candi date will participate in a series of interviews meet faculty and staff and give a presentation open to everyone on campus brown will give his campus presentation on dec 13 stew art on dec 15 and early on dec 19 all presentations are from 1:30 to 3 p.m in rauch business center the room has yet to be confirmed el-aasser said the campus visits are a crucial part of the selection process because they show if the individual is a good match with lehigh it is very important that the faculty and staff are able to enter into a dialogue with the candi dates el-aasser said and at the same time candidates have the opportunity to see what they will be working with el-aasser said each candidate is well qualified and exemplifies the qualities the search commit tee is seeking some of these qualities in clude a commitment to and success in scholarship teaching strong management skills the ability to recognize excellence and the ability to work as a team within the business school and the university as a whole el-aasser said one of the most important things they are look ing for in a new dean is someone who can recognize the strengths of the college but also propel it forward the new dean must be able to provide a clear vision for the college el-aasser said where do we want to go in the next five years el-aasser said it is also im portant the new dean be able to build bridges between the busi ness
