the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 22 friday december 1 2006 all the lehigh news first greenway project to revamp south side by katie ginda â– negotiations with land owner hold up plans for a new park in south bethlehem news writer the railroad tracks have been torn up and the weeds have been cut back and in their place will stretch a bike path across the south side for the community to enjoy not neces sarily soon but eventually according to city officials once constructed the greenway will serve as a path through south bethlehem's urban core for exercisers and commuters and will also serve as an overall community renovation project plans for a skate park playgrounds a public plaza community gardens additional park b&w photo by doug moquet ing zones a possible parking garage repaired street crossings at greenway intersections and new one-way streets to help enhance traffic flow are all included in plans for the greenway project the master plan divides the project into three segments east central and west the eastern and western sections will focus on areas for physical activity and public events while the improved central section will high light the surrounding commercial and residen tial areas i think it's going to be transforming beth lehem mayor john callahan said i think it's going to have a tremendous effect on the qual ity of life in south bethlehem scott mcklveen general manager of the university comfort suites hotel at west third street and broadhead avenue said it'll be classy when they get done with it from a cos bethlehem plans to purchase land and build greenway on a former railway owned by norfolk southern the greenway will include a skatepark and bike path and will aid in pedestrian traffic frats meet occupancy standards by madelyn king â– four fraternities fill 90 percent of house retain residences assistant news editor all four under-occupancy fraternities have recruited enough new members this semester to retain residential status said tim wilkinson as sistant dean of students alpha chi rho delta sigma phi delta upsilon and kappa sigma fraternities were below 90 percent occupancy the previous three semesters according to the strength ening greek life task force policy any chapters not meet ing the 90 percent occupancy standard for three consecutive semesters will be given a grace period during the third se mester in which the chapters can recruit more live-in mem bers before the next semester begins the four fraternities in question were able to recruit enough members during this grace period tom dubreuil associate dean of residence life and fraternity and sorority affairs said he believes the 90 percent occupancy rule strengthens the greek community we tried to provide enough flexibility to all of the chapters dubreuil said we wanted to give all of the chap ters the best opportunities we could these four chapters worked with their greek life coor dinators the office of frater nity and sorority affairs and wilkinson to set up successful recruitment plans for their chapters we were in constant con tact with tim wilkinson and the office of fraternity and sorority affairs throughout the spring and summer said darius cubbage 07 president of du we knew what steps had to be taken and were fully prepared to begin working on those things as soon as the se mester got underway du was under occupancy by one member and success fully initiated four new mem bers this semester mike puopolo 08 presi dent of delta sig said his house was given a 19-day ex tension on the deadline to sign bids delta sig will initiate eight new members before the end of the semester alumni gifts support shine forever fund by gina jannone associate editor online the name ulrich is familiar to many lehigh students it is the name for the sports complex on goodman campus and the student center on asa packer campus some stu dents may also have spotted the name in leadership plaza on their way into the alumni memorial building ronaldj ulrich graduated from lehigh in 1966 with engineering and business degrees since then he was successful with morgan stanley before going to equinox capital management llc he has been one of the most influential and generous alumni of the university ulrich was an example of someone who believed giv ing and involvement go hand in hand said vice president for advancement bonnie devlin he thought a giver should focus on an area that he or she is passionate for joseph perella graduated lehigh in 1964 before going on to the military and harvard college for graduate school after founding his own company and filling a prominent position at morgan stanley perella was named banker of the year in 2006 by investment dealers digest in 2003 perella and his wife amy endowed the perella department of finance in rauch business center perella also contributed funds to other aspects of the business cen ter and the
