the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 19 tuesday november 14 2006 all the lehigh news first skull left on umoja steps b&w photo by john conner umoja house residents found the skinned head of an animal on their front steps saturday umoja upset over potential hate crime â– house residents upset about police reaction to skinned animal head outside front door by katy jacobson assistant news editor the skinned head of a dead animal skull was found on the umoja house stairs saturday evening whitney pryor 08 a resident of umoja found the carcass at about 5 p.m after returning from the grocery store with her father however residents in the house say they heard a thud on the door at about 4:30 p.m the head was found at the bottom of the steps and seemed to have rolled out of a paper bag found closer to the door after its impact it is not known if the incident was bias-related pryor said she was shocked and horrified with the incident and believed it to be an act of intimidation what kind of message is someone trying to tell you pryor said pryor said she called the police and they arrived about 15 min utes later shaun redwood 08 a resi dent of umoja said he was very disappointed because he felt po lice weren't seriously considering the possibility the incident was bias-related i understand that you can't validate that it was motivated racially or otherwise i under news writer stand that redwood said but the way that officer handled the situation it leads us to believe that they weren't even exploring the possibility that it could have been something else other than a prank redwood said that the incident happened at the umoja house makes him think it could have been bias-related it's a house that people refer to as the black house where all the black kids live even though statistically that's not true red wood said so that leads many of us to believe that this is a tar geted incident especially with the current climate here at lehigh people are pushing for change and diversity and there's been a string of bias incidents police cite 41 people at phi kap â– students upset over police actions that occurred this weekend by madelyn king assistant news editor police broke up an unreg istered party at phi kappa theta fraternity on thursday night and cited 41 people at the house over the course of two hours said chief of police edward shupp the incident comes just a day after john smeaton vice provost for student affairs sent out a campus-wide e-mail urging students to make smart decisions about drinking according to phi kap presi dent mike angis 07 seven cops and two security guards blocked every door to the house angis also said police de activated the fire alarm to prevent anyone from pulling the alarm and evacuating the house we really didn't think that was necessary angis said and it was also really dangerous angis said the police searched the house because they saw people entering and leaving however he said no alcohol was confiscated people were coming in and out of the house angis said but we really didn't have anything going on that would warrant searching through the whole house shupp said the number of officers on patrol was typical of a thursday night six or seven is about aver age on a thursday night he said shupp said a person cited at phi kap who was sent to st luke's hospital had a blood alcohol content that was the highest police have seen this semester there was a person there that should have been coma tose or close to dead shupp said the bac was well over 3 smeaton said the high bac level of the student is an example of the problems he highlighted in his e-mail i think it is exactly what there's more of a conscious effort to en force the law and make the campus safer so we can address the issue of alcohol abuse -
