w & j smoker will be held to-night presidents battle here tomorrow price five cents vol xxxviii no 8 house party plans nearly completed strong team from washington pa to play first game on taylor field a peppy evening expected on the eve of lehigh's first big home game sword and crescent holds first meeting lehigh team shows good form in holding orange team to 2-2 tie week-end of october 29 looms up as a big one here at lehigh both teams primed a full program lafayette takes honors in cross-country meet six men of maroon and white complete course before first lehigh man to elect members from senior class to fill present vacancies two dances and west virginia football game to add to entertainment forward passing expected to be mode of attack used against washington and jefferson sword and crescent held its first meeting of the year last monday night at the delta tau delta house where the men were entertained at dinner sword and crescent is an honorary senior society considered to be one of the best in college it consists of fifteen seniors who are elected because of the unselfish ser vices they have rendered to lehigh they represent the fifteen biggest men in college at this meeting it was decided to have society meetings the first thursday of each month a reso lution was drawn up to express sym pathy concerning the death of dr j w richards the actions and changes of government of athletics by the athletic committee were dis cussed and a resolution was drawn up which is published in this issue of the brown and white 10 the effect that ratifications to athletic rules shall be brought before the student body a committee was appointed to go over the senior roll in order to pick men to fill the vacancies in the so ciety the process of choosing the new members will be gone through conscientiously without regard for personal feeling in selecting these future members the society will go through the entire roll of the class of 1922 considering each man sep arately so that no one will be over looked and it will hold frank dis cussion on all possibilities thus the seniors who find they are a mong the fortunate group may feel that they have been signally honor ed by this election and that they rightfully deserve membership next college dance is on october 29 pi delta epsilon to work on press club lafayette's cross-country team journeyed to lehigh wednesday afternoon and completely outclass ed the brown and white in the first meet of the season scoring 15 points to lehigh's 40 running over the official st luke's course the la fayette hill-and-dalers took the lead at the start and six maroon-clad runners crossed the line at the fin ish before erb of lehigh put in appearance the easton collegians have prac tically a veteran team and experi enced no difficulty in maintaining the lead they gained at the start crawford of the last u s olym pic team and one of the best track men in the east finished fourth being led in by mccall captain of the team boettcher and kemper harper and tracy of lafayette ran next to crawford with erb and leister of lehigh taking seventh and eighth places the other run ners finished in the order named : laßar lafayette gerlach ra moser underwood sigmund palmer and stratton lehigh the n:en in the order they fin ished and their times were : mcfall lafayette 33 m 2>z l s s ; judges — p b frain lt graham a j barthold chief timer — coach kanaly starter — gingrich after being away for two weeks in which she broke even with rut gers and state lehigh will return to her own grounds to-morrow af ternoon to meet washington and jefferson the presidents come here to-morrow with a clean slate and victories chalked up against bethany bucknell west virginia wesleyan and carnegie tech they will make every effort to-morrow to keep their goal-line uncrossed and score another triumph over le high to-morrow afternoon in the taylor stadium the presidents realizing the hard game ahead of them have been un dergoing strenuous sessions the past week but have been hampered by rain anyone familiar with the w and j field can readily realize the havoc rain can pla^with the grid iron the playing surface becomes virtually a sea of mud which makes practice impossible according to a despatch from washington pa coach neale is convinced that his men needed one more stiff practice session before the coming battle and inasmuch as the team left for the east this morning wednesday was the only time that a scrimmage between the varsity and scrubs was possible assistant coach kellison brought back the lehigh plays from state and took charge of the scrubs who were supplied with lehigh for mations neale's principal aim was to develop a defense against the par ticular lehigh plays which gained so much ground against state and which almost demoralized bezdek's men at times the line-up will be the same as that in last saturday's game against tech except that west the versa tile colored half-back will probably replace brenkert at least twenty four players will be taken on the trip which includes an excursion to new york over sunday continued on page four more wrestlers for freshman team wanted former lehigh man to address y m c a at the meeting of the interfra ternity council held last monday evening further plans were discus sed for the house parties during the week-end of the west virginia game on october 29 about nine fraternities announced their inten tion of staging parties and an at tractive two-day program has been planned the annual sophomore cotillion will be held in drown hall on fri day night october 28 while at the sa ne time the freshman class will have their dance in one of the fra ternity houses the game will start promptly at 2.30 o'clock saturday on taylor field and immediately after the game there will be a tea dance in drown hall lasting until 7 o'clock in the evening at 8.30 o'clock there will be a college dance in drown hall this makes a full program for the entire two days of the house-party week-end the plans for the sophomore co tillion are rapidly being completed by the sophomore cotillion com n ittee and it promises to be a brilliant affair fully up to the stan dard set in other years the fresh man class met on tuesday after noon to discuss plans for their dance but have not as yet reached a final decision on the management of the affair a committee will be appointed to decide on the frater nity house where it is to be held and definite arrangements should be well under way by the latter part of the week gontinued on page four the college dance will last from 8.30 o'clock until midnight and the subscription will be 1.00 the ar the tea dance committee has se cured the lehigh six for the music to-morrow afternoon and the presence of these well-known en tertainers assures music well above the average for the entertainment of house r party guests mrs natt m emery will be the patroness of the tea dance and the interfrater nity council wishes to emphasize the fact that every one in college is invited regardless of whether or not they live at a fraternity house the subscription is to be 1.00 the proceeds of which will go to buy books for the student self-aid bu reau this fact if no other should bring a large turn-out and make the dance a success the next meeting of the pi delta epsilon will be held next monday evening at 7.15 o'clock in drown hall the purpose of this meeting is to perfect a plan for the forma tion of the lehigh press club a meeting of all men who might in any way be interested in the press club will be held next wednesday evening in drown hall it will be formed of men who will write up all athletic events at lehigh such as football games and wrestling matches and other college events for the metropolitan newspapers the purpose of this club is to put lehigh on the map in the newspa per sporting world if this is ac complished it will be of great ben efit to lehigh scimitar elections the soccer team played its first . intercollegiate game yesterday af ternoon with syracuse the game ending with the score tied at two ; goals apiece syracuse elected to defend the east goal from the kick-off it was seen that the game would be nip and tuck much of the playing of this half was done in the middle of the field neither team being able to get by their opponents forwards the first score came when but five minutes remained of the first half the forward line took the ball into syracuse territory and on a beautiful pass from mercur fer nandez shot the ball into a corner of the net the first half ended soon after this syracuse came back in the sec ond half determined to fight for the game a short interval had elapsed when wertz scored for syracuse on a nice bit of passing bertenshaw to ross to wertz lehigh soon got another opportunity to score when fernandez was given a penalty kick syracuse handling the ball he shot the ball into a corner of the net be fore the goal-keeper could move with the score at 2 to 1 and only seven more minutes to play syra cuse scored on a penalty-kick and tied the count many lehigh men who saw the play on which syra cuse tallied did not think that the big orange team deserved the point the ball was in play near the le high goal when a foul was detected ross was given a free kick which brewer kept out of the goal the referee then claimed that ross kick ed before he blew the whistle and he was given another kick this time he was successful and the point | counted wertz inside left for syracuse ! played a fine game while the entire j lehigh combination played excel jlently whitney stood out as a strong man on the defense while fernandez played an excellent game he was responsible for both of lehigh's tallies the line-ups : lehigh syracuse brewer g cooley trumbore ... r f b huston demenezes . l f b ross lamb r h b suman warren .... c h b ... partridge whitney .... l h b condit gonzales .... o r . . bartenshaw mercur i r phillips fernandez ... c f johnson bonnemaison . i l wertz siemann .... o l jagger goals — fernandez 2 wertz and ross substitutions — lehigh walters for bonnemaison ; syra cuse sargent for phillips ref eree — williams the second college smoker will be held to-night at 7.30 o'clock in taylor gym this smoker promi ses to be one of the best ever held here elaborate preparations having been made in the way of enter tainment it's going to be a corker there will be boxing and wrestling bouts between sophomores and freshmen as well as a novelty con test which bids fair for a merry time — perhaps not so for the par ticipants neither of the two low er classes have as yet asserted their supremacy in a justifiable manner and they are waiting for the oppor tunity to-night to settle it one way or the other there will be three very interest ing speakers which undoubtedly will be a big treat of course it goes without saying that our band will be there to furnish the music for no college smoker is complete without it under the direction of the head cheer-leader sam shipley a new lehigh yell will be practiced as well as the new lehigh marching song it is requested that all those who have copies of this song to bring them along smokes will be fur nished as usual but those having their old corn-cob pipes are asked to bring them along we can not beat washington and jefferson if every man does not get behind that team they have a strong team and it's going to take everything we have to beat them we are determined to wipe out last year's defeat and nothing will con tribute more than getting up pep and spirit to show our own team we are backing it up to a man so it's up to every son of lehigh to get down to the gym to-night to get things going and to get in the big p-rade after the smoker the slo gan for to-night is — beat w and j a w hicks chairman of the university dance committee is planning for the second dance of the season to be held on the even ing of october 29 at 8.30 o'clock those who attended last saturday's dance will testify to its success and there is every reason to believe that the coming one will be as good if , not better the time is very propitious for it will be on the day of the west virginia game and also at house party time it will furnish a con venient and enjoyable way to enter tain lehigh's visiting friends subscriptions to the dance will be 1.50 per couple mrs h r rei i ter will be the hostess < burr meeting the regular meeting of the burr board will be held to-night in the board room in drown hall the meeting is called for 7 o'clock in or der to be over before the moker all competitors are to report and bring along any material that they have all material must be in at this time for the november issue the speaker at the y m c a meeting next sunday evening at 6.15 o'clock will be professor clar ence e clewell of the engineering department of the university of pennsylvania professor clewell graduated from lehigh as an elec trical engineer with the class of 05 and is one of the outstanding men among the faculty of the en gineering courses of the university of pennsylvania and also in the city of philadelphia he has gain ed quite a reputation as a speaker and his message to the student body promises to be a good one there will be a special musical program by a good orchestra and the stu dents are all invited to be present the y m c a has arranged to have some very prominent speakers during the next few weeks and any one who misses these will certainly regret it with the coming of the wrestling season assistant coach bertolet who is in charge of the freshman team has arranged six meets a mong which are the freshman teams of cornell columbia and univer sity of pennsylvania however the slowness of the freshmen in com ing out for the team has made it necessary for assistant coach ber tolet to issue another call for can didates in as much as there are any number of openings all freshmen who have wrestled before or those who would like to start now should report to assist ant coach bertolet on monday wednesday and friday at taylor gym at present there are about 25 freshmen who are out for the team coach bertolet wants irore than this for while some good material has shown up there are gaps which must be filled at a meeting of the scimitar club recently the following men were elected j f rogers g w boggs w g huggins r j buck s e johnson s r davidson a b sayre r d warriner and m k penwell the following men were elected to honorary memberships : g h bell g e cornelius h f cousens e b gould a w hicks and j piersol the initiation for the new men will take place this coming saturday brown and white bethlehem pa friday october 21 1921 syracuse soccer game ends in draw the w & j game tomorrow is event number 2 don't forget the smoker tonight at 7.30 o'clock in the gym first interfraternity council tea dance drown hall tomorrow afternoon music by lehigh six subscription 1.00 4.30 - 7 o'clock
