the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 16 friday november 3 2006 all the lehigh news first university addressing safety by kristen george news writer editor's note an asterisk denotes name changes to protect anonymity ann never expected to be the target of a kidnapper while on campus on a september afternoon ann was walking to meet her friend for a run around the campus and bethlehem we always run during the day normally sometimes as late as 7 p.m as long as it's still light out she said we never had problems before obviously we get beeped at sometimes and stupid whistles but you ignore them and go on with your life she approached the intersection of fillmore street and packer avenue with caution as she normally does be cause of the traffic as she crossed the street a white chev rolet truck with a middle-aged caucasian male at the helm slowed down beside her and rolled down his window i was like that was really sketchy she said he just stopped and then didn't say anything it was just really weird and i kind of got creeped out ann saw whitney clark 08 and emily slingerland 08 her friends driving behind the truck she walked over to them in an attempt to avoid the man after briefly talking to them she continued to walk crossing in front of the zoellner parking garage then the truck pulled over on the opposite side of the road clark and slingerland watched the truck pull over suspicious of the driver's behavior they decided to park a few cars in front of him the truck then sped across the street towards ann he stopped abruptly almost going over the curb and yelled at ann several times to get in the car ann immediately ran to clark's car and jumped in the backseat she watched the truck speed off going the wrong way down taylor street it shook us up because we were just disturbed by it slingerland said and the fact that anybody could do that to us at any time students often mistake the bubble lehigh creates for safety they ignore many of the programs the university provides to promote safety but knowledge of campus security measures and the surrounding community is be trick or treat at lehigh photo courtesy of tiffany searles children from south bethlehem attended the fifth annual spooktacular halloween event sunday activities included crafts pumpkin carving and a magic show see story page 6 peace studies minor introduced for spring by leigh gilsenan senior news writer a new peace studies minor to address international con cepts of war and violence will be offered next semester the peace studies minor will be co-advised by professor addison bross of the english department and professor chaim kaufmann of the inter national relations department the idea for a peace studies minor began about three years ago when bross taught a fresh man seminar called consider ing peace and nonviolence bross said the course material and several guest speakers sparked students interest in the importance of peace studies when i taught consider ing peace and nonviolence three years ago as a freshman seminar an outside speaker colman mccarthy of the center for teaching peace in washington d.c whom i invited to campus urged students to agitate for a peace studies program bross said some from my class and oth ers got together researched water issues problematic for coxe hall by olivier lewis senior news writer for more than a year timo thy cauller associate director of english as a second language had a problem no one could fix grimy mud-colored water forced cauller to stop using any of the sinks or water fountains in coxe hall where he teaches and works the building's water had a turbid consistence from summer 2005 until oct 16 at first cauller thought the problem was related to con struction work on lamberton hall situated just slightly above and southwest of coxe hall - renovations there also started in summer 2005 we thought it would be a temporary inconvenience cauller said what was strange is how the problem persisted after the construction finished according to cauller the water quality fluctuated it was never completely clear cauller said but it was improved during this semester one of his students went to fill two bottles from the water fountain and returned to class with two containers full of brown water susan kitei director of the health center said she did not hear about any water complaints yet kitei recommends avoiding drinking any unclear water drinking water with a large amount of silt or mud could result in gastrointestinal distress including vomiting or diarrhea kitei said in an e-mail of greater concern would be drink ing water with a high bacterial count and there is the possibil ity that discolored or muddy water is contaminated with bacteria i would recommend against drinking water that doesn't ap pear or smell as it should she said water can be filtered to get rid of particulate matter and purified to make it safe to drink michael trzesniowski asso ciate director of facility services said drinking the dirty water is not dangerous there are niters trzesn iowski said sediment is not harmful sediment is minerals all water is going to have some sem blance of particulate i drink tap water he said bethlehem's water is among the best water in the lehigh valley and that is what people don't understand bethlehem's water comes from the poconos from a see water page 4 see peace page 3 see safety page 2 international week > p m men's soccer team president gast comes to campus 10 ready for addresses nov 4-11 i | league playoffs student senate page 7 page 16 bw.lehigh.edu
