the brown and white vol 114 no 14 lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 friday october 27 2006 all the lehigh news first student charged for campus thefts by emily mason news writer rahul peter yukich 09 was arrested on charges of access device fraud theft and receiving stolen property friday police said yukich stole property from taylor gymnasium on thursday oct 12 and alpha tau omega fraternity on friday oct 13 yukich used stolen credit cards and goidplus cards to make multiple purchases police said yukich was apprehended at cleo's silversmith studio and gallery on east third street in bethle hem police said police said yukich said he stole the items to sup port a cocaine addiction according to the morning call lehigh university chief of police edward shupp said he was not at liberty to discuss that allegation yukich had made a purchase at cleo's on sunday oct 15 after which the police notified the store that a credit card had been reported stolen yukich returned later in the week to make a sec ond purchase cleo smith owner of cleo's silversmith studio and gallery said after the police notified her about the stolen credit card the woman who had waited on yukich recognized him the next time he came in the employee asked yukich if he had been in the b&wphoto by sara meade taylor gym is one site where the thefts took place rendell rallies students faculty by matthew jacob news writer the bush administration's no child left behind policy provides money for crucial student testing each year but does not give the states money to help said penn sylvania governor ed rendell on tuesday at a democratic rally in the lamberton hall great room rendell discussed his past four years as governor and offered his plans for the future at the lehigh valley young democrats event the rally is part of rendelps cam paign tour before the nov 7 election rendell presented a variety of issues that all voters are confronted with in the upcoming election par ticularly education and the future of pennsylvania's work force we are here for some serious business he said before his term as governor the state spent no money on tutoring during his four years in office 72 million was allocated for after-school tutoring that has benefited 184,000 students if a quarter of a day's cost of the war in iraq or 70 million was spent on tutoring we could double b&w photo by daniel sommer the state's tutoring budget he said rendell said the tax cuts deliv ered by the bush administration were ineffective and merely gave more money to the wealthy but he also assured the people in attendance that they can do some thing about it that's what the election's all about rendell said all these things are within our reach if we have a terrific turnout on nov 7 rendell also discussed the hib visa program which fills american job openings with foreign workers pennsylvania governor ed rendell discussed his experience in government and his plans for the future to students and faculty at a rally held in the lamberton hall great room on tuesday do-gooder rule lacking at lehigh by leann austin news writer discussions about implementing a good samaritan policy at lehigh have been ongoing among the student senate campus safety office and the dean of students office since last year the policy however has not yet been written into the code of conduct other universities have a good samaritan policy which ensures students will not get in trouble for underage drinking if they call an ambulance for a friend who needs medical attention student senate president cara diorio 07 said she is concerned about not having a good samaritan policy on campus she said it deters students from asking for help because they fear getting in trouble with the university safety has always been a priority for the student senate she said i think the idea of a good samaritan policy is something that should be establishing and publicizing on campus other patriot league schools such as buck nell university lafayette college and george town university have adopted such policies to protect the safety of their students lafayette has had it for more than seven years said kevin d worthen dean of students at lafayette our good samaritan policy is widely used and publicized to students throughout the year worthen said it sends the right message about what is most important to us the health and safety of our students is essential according to assistant dean of students chris mulvihill lehigh has not written and ad opted such a policy because it is still trying to see thefts page 3 see rendell page 2 see samaritan page 3 experts discuss i men's soccer team plans approved paranormal activity „,? moves to 13th for new building on campuses • b hem nation on maginnes lawn page 5 l s page 12 bw.lehigh.edu i m 3 «-/
