mulvihill said plagiarism is one of the most common forms of academic dishonesty on campus cheating on ex ams and collusion cases are also common he said how ever the number of collusion cases has decreased because professors make it clear they will report incidents where students work too closely together on assignments the university handles between 20 and 35 cases of academic dishonesty every year during the 2005-2006 academic year 26 cases were adjudicated mulvihill said the number of cases the committee handled this past year is close to the number of academic honesty cases the year before mulvihill said don mccabe of rutgers university founder of the center for academic integrity at duke uni versity has researched incidents of academic dishonesty on college campuses mccabe conducted a nationwide survey with the center for academic integrity from fall 2002 to june of 2005 he polled 50,000 undergraduates from more than 60 campuses according to mccabe's study 70 percent of college students admit to cheating he also found that 44 percent of more than 10,000 fac ulty members of universities were aware of students cheat ing in their courses but did not report the incidents mulvihill said he thinks faculty members do not report all incidents of cheating that occur he said some professors don't like the way the system works some don't think they have enough evidence and some don't have enough time when a student accused of violating the code of con duct is found responsible a sanction is issued of the 26 cases last year nine cases resulted in a disciplinary warning and nine resulted in disciplinary probation one student was suspended and one was expelled six of the students held responsible for cheating also re ceived an f in the course the other cases are still being adjudicated if a student accused of cheating is found responsible the sanction is recorded in the student's disciplinary record not on the student's transcript the transcript will only reflect a
