the ail-american rejects played at stabler arena on friday night despite the well-known band the concert was poorly attended the concert was organized by university productions only students from area colleges could purchase tickets coe given 2.25 million gift by leigh gilsenan senior news writer a 2.25 million donation was given to the college of education to create a center for urban leadership on friday peter bennett 63 made the donation that will create a center that will marry research de velopment and practice in education to create a program that will prepare educators for work in urban schools the idea began when lehigh part nered with the u.s department of education for the philadelphia urban leadership program in this program lehigh worked with inner-city schools in philadelphia and helped teachers and principals deliver the highest quality of educa tion to poorer school districts once this grant ran out bennett thought it was important to keep a project of that nature at lehigh bennett's donation will go to the development of this center which will target urban schools in philadelphia as well as allentown and reading the entire center will cost 5 mil lion to fund bennett has pledged al most half that amount and is working to raise the rest of the money sally white the dean of the col lege of education said she thinks this new center will have a very effect on the entire college biased acts return to campus by lauren rieders assistant news editor ten bias-motivated incidents have occurred in residence halls and other buildings on cam pus since the beginning of the semester according to john smeaton vice provost for student affairs and chair of the bias re sponse team eight of the incidents took place in three residence halls lower centennials dravo house and sayre park village one incident occurred in fairchild-martin dale library and another occurred outside of lamberton hall smeaton said graffiti in residence halls such as on message boards a bathroom stall door and a form posted on a bulletin board were the most common bias incidents in the library a bias-related message was written on a desk in one instance individuals yelled derogato ry comments from a car near lamberton hall smeaton said five of the reported incidents occurred during check-in weekend in august the remaining incidents occurred in mid-sep tember all of the instances involved use of de rogatory terms regarding sexual orientation smeaton said the names of individuals responsible for the incidents have not been released smeaton said the university is taking steps to respond to bias-motivated crimes education is the most effective tool to prevent acts of intolerance and ignorance smeaton said each incident is evaluated to determine the most appropriate response assistant dean of resident life susan mead said she does not think the incidents could have been prevented in a perfect world bias-related incidents shooting occurs outside of brodhead house by clark lampen assistant news editor a man fired a shot at a bethlehem resident in front of brodhead house on tuesday oct 10 po lice said jaime e valcaral 43 a resident of wyandotte st was arraigned on charges of attempted murder and related offenses last tuesday evening he was committed to northampton county prison in lieu of 500,000 bail according to the express-times the victim jesus san tana of beacon street was in his car at the intersection of west morton and vine street when valcaraps car pulled up along side of him fired one shot from a handgun and sped away the shot missed santana and lodged itself in the center console of his car police said santana reported that he was familiar with val caral because valcaral dates his ex-girlfriend court records stated records say the two had problems before this in cident as well as a result of the shooting broughal middle school located fewer than two blocks away from the crime scene was locked down until roughly 2 p.m police said in addition to attempted murder valcaral has also been charged with aggravated assault simple assault reckless endangerment criminal mischief and propulsion of missiles into an occupied vehicle according to the express-times chris alders 09 resident of brodhead said he never even knew that a shooting took place and that he has seen no added security there is no security at brodhead at least that i've seen but i don't feel any more afraid to be out side at night than i did before alders said i can understand that some people especially women are weary to walk back to brodhead at night since it's
