the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 10 friday october 6 2006 all the lehigh news first social policy changes reversed by katy jacobson assistant news editor the greek social policy put into effect this semester will be reverted back to the old policy effective the wednesday after pacing break at noon the new policy introduced at the start of the semes ter forbode fraternity houses from having non-members in the house friday through sunday unless the event was registered but allowed them to have a total of 70 people in the house monday through thursday the policy however will now be changed back to last year's policy of 50 people in a fraternity house at all times unless it is a registered event said associate dean of students tom dubreuil dubreuil and tim wilkinson assistant dean of frater nity and sorority affairs said in a joint e-mail response that the change in policy was set up to be a pilot program for the fall semester and that they were staying in regu lar contact with ifc panhellenic council and the cam pus police to see how the changes were working approximately two weeks ago we gathered a group of ifc members panhel members chapter presidents police and administration to lay all of the issues out on the table dubreuil and wilkinson said we came to the conclusion that we probably shouldn't continue with the pilot program if it was not working for so many groups and people dubreuil and wilkinson said the new policy was put into place because the former policy was not working for fraternities because of the increase in the size of most memberships dubreuil and wilkinson said chapters said they felt as if they were not able to have a few friends over to hang out because only 50 people were allowed in the house at one time — most chapters already have close to 50 mem bers they said dubreuil and wilkinson said they convened a com mittee last year composed of students staff and alumni that devised the pilot policy the rule that all events on weekends should be regis tered came directly from representatives from ifc stat ing that they typically had fewer behavioral problems at events when they were registered 250,000 grant to aid professor recruitment by larissa staszkiw news writer lehigh has received a 250,000 grant to be used to improve faculty career flexibility and to attract new employees the grant part of a 1.3 mil lion grant from the alfred p sloan foundation in collabora tion with the american council on education and families and work institute was awarded to lehigh on its policies of career flexibility and its proposal on how the university will use the grant money said anne meltzer dean of the college of arts and sciences jean r soderlund deputy provost for faculty affairs said the award recognizes research universities for their policies on career flexibility for tenured and tenure-track faculty soderlund said the sloan award will fund two new pro grams at lehigh the integrated faculty career transition pro gram and the dual-career assis tance consortium as part of the integrated faculty career transition pro gram a senior faculty member will work with faculty and their departments to improve their use of family and medical leave and tenure-clock extension time the award will also enable us to provide research grants of 6,000 each to help faculty members sustain research pro ductivity while caring for a new born or adopted child or other family member soderlund said faculty will be able to use these grants in ways they determine to administration pushes survey about diversity by kim macdonald news writer the administration is of fering prizes and seeking the help of presidents of student organizations in an effort to get as many students as pos sible to take a climate survey due out mid-october when released a link to the confidential survey will be e-mailed to students fac ulty and staff to gather data about people's experiences on campus the survey's link will also be posted on lehigh's web site and the campus portal for three weeks the survey will cover is sues including race religion socio-economic background and sexual orientation among other diversity issues to help ensure participa tion leaders of student groups such as student senate in terfraternity council panhel the association of student alumni the movement and others are being asked to en courage their members to take the survey also upon completion of the survey participants will be entered into a prize lottery lottery prizes include plane ticket vouchers ipods digital cameras gift cards to the mall and gift cards for gas among other items the administration will also be ordering t-shirts to be worn around campus en couraging students to take the survey michelle samuels associ ate dean of students said the survey should be a success because diversity is a big topic on campus i have confidence students will want to do this because it's a topic discussed widely on campus samuels said approximately a year and a half ago a formal initiative was launched to increase di versity on campus the initiative is not limited to just race and ethnicity it also includes individual ex periences and backgrounds that help make a well-rounded campus the survey is expected to take about 20-30 minutes to complete it will allow students to comment on to personal experiences perceptions of others and also to offer recommendations graduate student nayla raad said the diversity sur vey represents the joint ef fort between students and
