by jessica stuart news writer a band party at the phi sig ma kappa fraterntiy house fri day raised over $ 1,000 for the american heart association brian lim 08 community service chair of phi sig said he thought fundraising for the american heart association would be a good way to spread the word about heart attacks and strokes everyone knows someone who experienced a heart attack or stroke lim said the event was sponsored by phi sig pi beta phi sorority and university productions and fea tured the bands ra ra riot a love like pi and team goldie lim picked the bands and arranged for them to perform at fridays show i just sent them e-mails to see if the dates worked lim said and every band has their own set prices attendees were asked to photo courtesy of brian lim make a 3 donation at the door the band party went from 10 p.m to 12 a.m matt distefano also known as team goldie performed first and provided vocals to his own pre-recorded tracks ra ra riot an indie rock band from syracuse n.y per formed next a love like pi closed the show with a performance that combined emo and electronica a love like pi performed friday night at the phi sig pi phi and university productions band party all of the proceeds will be donated to the american heart association program aids local businesses by christie jephson â– keystone innova tion zone provides students with new internship connections news writer a subsidizing program in the south side hopes to foster innovative business by joining together the community local businesses and lehigh said bill michalerya the associate vice president for governmental rela tions and economic development the program keystone inno vation zone has the goal of im proving the low levels of employ ment growth in pennsylvania many intelligent talented students are seeking jobs in other states with better entrepreneurial opportunities because they feel they have no options here ac cording to michalerya michalerya said the kiz program hopes to reverse this problem the kiz is a designated zone established near colleges universities and technical schools with the hopes of creating entre preneurial opportunities mi chalerya said kiz creates entrepreneurial opportunities by making impor tant connections between stu dents and resources both at the university and in the surrounding community the program funds intern ships offers grants to start-up businesses and funds research programs a kiz grant can range any where from 5,000 to 15,000 and the company can come back for more if needed michalerya said although it may not seem like much it can be exactly what is needed for a company to start up make a pro totype or do research in lehigh's expensive facilities to receive a kiz grant stu dents or teams with start-up busi ness ideas have to write a propos al to apply most of these students come from lehigh's integrated product development once their proposal is re ceived they go in front of a kiz panel to present their ideas and the board votes the kiz board is co-chaired by michalerya and tony hanna the director of community and economic development of beth lehem a professor and lehigh alumnus michalerya said the diversity of the board is a strong feature of the program the fact that the co-chairs are someone from lehigh and some one from the city of bethlehem demonstrates the strong univer sity-city partnership michalerya said kiz also offers funding for student internships when companies approach all-american rejects to play at stabler oct 13 by gabriela saade news writer the all-american rejects are performing at sta bler arena on friday oct 13 as part of the verizon wireless music unleashed concert series the show also features the alternative music of under the influence of giants the rock group da mone and the electro-pop group ima robot university productions president jessie braiman 07 said she is excited for the show she said she expects tickets to sell out stabler is a fun venue and it'll be a great time braiman said with the up-and-coming groups opening it is sure to provide a well-rounded experi ence for everyone the show will start at 8 p.m but doors open at 7 p.m tickets are being sold in ulrich student center the upper university center and stabler box office from 12 p.m to 2 p.m until the day of the show tickets are 10 and are available to students of the lehigh valley association of independent colleges this includes lehigh cedar crest muhlen berg lafayette and moravian colleges and desales university tickets are also available to northampton and lehigh carbon community college there is a limit of two tickets per person and a school id is required to purchase cash and gold plus are accepted at the uc and ulrich and only cash is accepted at
