the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 5 tuesday september 19 2006 all the lehigh news first untraditional gift becoming tradition by daniel glaser ■class of 2007 senior gift to do nate 20.07 to campus organization follows in tradition with last year's controversial class gift news writer the class of 2007 senior gift campaign was announced at a class kickoff event thursday urging class members to donate 20.07 in honor of their graduation year to any cause on campus students can donate their money to the le b&w photo by lindsay keller high fund which is a general fund that goes to various purposes on campus such as scholar ships operations and renovations students also have the option to donate di rectly to a campus organization of their choice last year's class gift also allowed students to donate money to a cause of their choice with 307 people in attendance four percent of the senior class gave their gift donating a total of over 1,000 which exceeded kickoff night donation from last year anne boig 07 senior class gift committee president said they chose this gift again because it was successful last year the class of 2007 kicked off its senior class gift campaign by announcing students can donate 20.07 in honor of their graduation year to any organization on campus student sued over dvd piracy by katy jacobson ■student named in mpaa piracy suit could face 150,000 per movie in fines assistant news editor oleg alex ribar 08 has been named in a lawsuit with the motion picture associa tion of america for selling pi rated dvds online according to the morning call ribar's suit is one of 14 lawsuits filed by columbia pictures in a u.s district court in los angeles on wednesday if found guilty ribar may face penalties of copyright infringement at 150,000 per movie according to the morning call mpaa claims ribar sold counterfeit copies of at least two movies ribar conducted his busi ness on eßay under the user name world_antiques and also on alibaba.com a global trading company under the user name apt business club the world_antiques eßay account was active for almost two years with a posi tive feedback rating of 99.5 percent but the account is no longer registered the most recent feed back for the account left on dec 29 2005 said very good dvd good qual ity superb ebayer seller reached by phone on sunday ribar said he has not been contacted by mpaa and did not know why the lawsuit was brought against him i haven't received any notification from the company mpaa i don't even know what's happening there ri bar said the only thing i can tell you is that my eßay account was used for accounting re search last year the mpaa said the mo tion picture industry lost 18.2 billion to piracy last year the combined loss for all produc ers distributors theaters video stores and pay-per-view operators according to the morning call losses include 7 billion in internet piracy and 11 billion lost to bootlegging and illegal copying harvard admission changes won't affect lehigh by chris kohler ■harvard's interim president announces plans to end its early-action admissions program prompting discussions about the policy at universities nationwide news writer although harvard university announced last week it will end early-action admissions next year because the policy could give wealthier students an unfair ad vantage lehigh has no plans to follow suit the interim dean of admissions and financial aid said harvard's interim president derek bok said stu dents who are more affluent and sophisticated toward the college admissions process are most likely to apply early according to the new york times less advantaged students shy away from early ad mission because many colleges require an ironclad commitment to attend the institution without being able to compare financial aid packages bok said harvard's decision has prompted discussion within many admissions offices around the country including at lehigh harvard is a totally different animal said j bruce gardiner lehigh's interim dean of admissions and financial aid they admit less than 10 percent of their applicants nobody else has those numbers lehigh depends on its binding early-decision pro b&w graphic by liz callahan the 39 percent statistic includes both early and regular decision applicants percentages based on class of 2010 admissions statistics see gift page 3 see admissions page 7 lehigh's local bands fight to rock page 10 p^k___i__r^^^__f k page 20 check the web site for online exclusives bw.lehigh.edu acceptance rates of students who apply early decision to lehigh are accepted of all students who apply to lehigh are accepted
