the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 4 friday september 15 2006 all the lehigh news first diversity on campus increasing by nicole nigro assistant news editor this year's freshman class is the most di verse in lehigh university's history as the number of black students more than doubled from last year and the number of hispanics tripled according to the class of 2010 statistics re leased tuesday by the office of institutional research 4.5 percent of the 1,217 freshman students are black and 6.7 percent are his panic this is up from the 1 percent black and 2 percent hispanic class of 2009 also up from last year is the number of asian students increasing from 5 percent of the class of 2009 to 6.3 percent of the class of 2010 3.3 percent are multi-racial 2 percent are native american and 2.5 percent are interna tional the class also includes increases in stu dents from th,e west and southeast dean of admissions j bruce gardiner said that although recruitment procedures were changed the main reason for the increase in diversity was getting more students to complete financial aid forms previously students were offered admission but had not completed financial aid forms gardiner said without the forms many accepted students were not able to attend lehigh because of tu ition costs gardiner said gardiner also said more students were flown into campus and lehigh had a full multicul tural staff he said that a call for diversity on campus comparing the classes b&w graphic by victoria danta the class of 2009 had 19 black 61 asian and 24 hispanic students the class of 2010 has 55 black 77 asian and 82 hispanic students after 13 years orchestra head leaves university by matthew jacob news writer paul chou founder and con ductor of the lehigh university philharmonic orchestra and associate professor of music will be leaving the orchestra sept 25 after 13 years chou joined the lehigh fac ulty in 1993 and since then the orchestra has grown from three to more than !)() members and performs regularly in zoellner arts center's baker hall chou said the decision to leave was one of the hardest of his life but he looks forward to new career opportunities chou will work for russell reynolds associates a global executive search and assessment company as executive director of the not-for-profit practice reynolds associates is the same firm lehigh hired to find current president alice gast chou sat on the presidential search committee my responsibilities will include searching for and assess ing potential university presi dents and other not-for-profit institution leaders chou said chou said his personal life was also an important factor that he weighed into his deci sion his new job will require him and his family to relocate to washington d.c a transition chou said he is excited to make i like the political pulse di versity and good schools for my son who was born last year he said overall d.c is a won derful and exciting place chou said he thinks his posi tion will be an enticing one for potential candidates now is a good time for someone else to come to the program because the orchestra is doing well and there is still a lot to do chou said the or chestra is poised for continued growth and performance at an even higher level paul salerni chair of the music department said chou's departure represents a new adventure for the master string player it's just another kind of chal lenge salerni said he's just had to find the next mountain to climb salerni said chou's depar ture was unexpected and he only had about three weeks to restructure the 200(>-2()()7 program for what he called one sept 11 memorial honors members of lehigh family by larissa staszkiw new writer to commemorate the lives of the eight alumni and four parents of alumni who died in the sept 11 2001 terror ist attacks 3,000 luminaries were placed along memorial drive and a ceremony was held to unveil a memorial at the alumni memorial building on sunday cheryl kaplun 08 vice president of the association of student alumni said members of the september 11 committee an ad-hoc committee of asa wanted to create a memorial that would be a symbol of the admiration and respect lehigh has for alumni and lehigh fam ily members kaplun said the committee decided the most appropriate way to commemorate the 12 individuals was a living memo rial something symbolic yet poignant that would forever serve as a solid proof of re b&w photo by chris ferenzi membrance on campus the committee arranged for trees to be planted by the alumni building that would bloom during september benches in a garden area were placed on the walkway to the south of the building for people to think and reflect kaplun said asa ran the project from beginning to end from choosing to create the me morial to designing the walkway in honor of the lives of 12 members of the lehigh family who died in the sept 11 2001 terrorist attacks lloyd steffen
