lehigh university brown and white vol 89 — no 5 bethlehem pa september 16 1977 215-866-0331 1 million needed to build arena by christoph szechenyi the university must raise l-million to meet the building costs of the 3.5 million arena planned for saucon valley con struction of the final phase of the athletic and convocation center acc is scheduled to begin in october according to eric ottervik vice president for planning we still need a million dollars we expect to raise this money during the arena's construction period paul franz vice president for development said the university already has 2.5 million committed for the project mr franz usually pulls through he has a year and-a-half to raise the million ottervik said completion of the arena is scheduled for the winter of 1978 at that time all con struction costs should be paid ottervik said one-hundred and sixty donors have made gifts the major contributors are donald stabler a trustee philip rauch murry goodman and herbert imbt all university alumni franz said i'm confident we can raise the remaining money franz said i think we should get the arena under contract before construction prices escalate any further he continued price estimates for the arena recently were submitted to the university but a contract has not been signed ottervik said plans for the athletic and convocation center began in 1969 as part of the new century campaign the arena is the last building to be completed in a sports complex where wrestling tournaments track meets tennis matches and other athletic events are held the other part of the acc the field house was completed in september 1975 since the athletic facilities concept initially emerged the dimensions of the arena have shrunk and plans for air conditioning and paved parking space have been scrapped at the beginning of this year the arena was projected to cost 6 million for single major events people will park on the grass we also are going to have a small gravel parking lot with the hope that more money will permit us to pave it later ottervik said the arena is not going to be air con ditioned because the budget doesn't permit it he added air conditioning would cost an additional 100,000 despite the persistent budget problems some administrators are optimistic franz pointed out the arena will not only allow 6,000 spectators to view athletic events but also will be able to handle commencement convocations concerts lectures and even a circus franz said that with the arena the university will have enough seating and mat space so it can once again host the eastern intercollegiate wrestling championships dean of students william quay said the university plans to rent the arena to organizations and promoters in the lehigh valley during vacations and off-hours quay said the university has not received any commitments from outside groups however he and ottervik said the university hopes to regain a portion of the 100,000 in operating costs from outside activities a special manager will maximize the facility's use schedule events and promote outside participation ottervik explained in the long run interstate 78 is sup posed to run through saucon valley with an interchange near the arena the high way will provide easy access for students lehigh valley residents and alumni ottervik said with such bright prospects in mind franz added right now our only problem is to raise the rest of the money for the arena's construction the money for its operation and maintenance will be the icing on the cake paul franz terms of proposed lease delay start of highrise byjanemarcin the terms of a proposed contract is holding up the signing of the plaza high rise lease eric ottervik vice-president for planning said he described the 10-year least as unattractive to banks con sidering the 4 million loan to the developers as far as the lease affects us i think this will be the main one problem he commented he said a change in the length of the proposed lease would not come as much of a surprise to the developers he explained this is a bargaining process we are considering a longer lease to make the project go he said ottervik said the university is considering signing a 20-year lease with the developers he stated the city would view the university as irrational if it did not facilitate the signing of the lease ten years is not a publicly defensible lease he explained we have a good faith understanding with the city to improve the community preston parr vice-president and dean of student affairs said."some years ago we eric ottervik sophomore hit by train a university student was hit by a train yesterday afternoon near the intersection of 3rd and hayes streets in south bethlehem roberta leopold 80 is recuperating in the intensive care unit of st luke's hospital a hospital spokeswoman said last night that leopold suffered a broken pelvic bone and numerous lacer ations she probably will remain in intensive care for a couple of days the spokeswoman said right now the details of the accident are not very clear ar thur mann associate dean of i students said last night the bethlehem police are investigating the accident he added the police investigator assigned to the case was not available for comment faculty lauds brockway search for new dean is on by jim donahue surprise and disappointment were the most common reactions to brian brock way's resignation as dean of the college of business and economics according to a brown and white survey of about half the faculty members in the college faculty members praised brockway as a good dean and teacher and said he would be missed brockway announced his resignation last friday at a faculty meeting of the business college according to finn jensen retiring chairman of the depart ment of economics and co-chairman of the search committee for a new dean brock way received a five-minute standing ovation from the faculty after the meeting brockway intends to remain at the university as a professor everybody was satisfied with brock way alfred koch professor of ac counting explained he added that brock way would be difficult to replace faculty members said the effect of brockway's resignation will depend on who will be the new dean we will have to find someone to pick up where brockway left off james b hobbs professor of accounting and co chairman of the search committee said hobbs said he and his committee hope to find a new dean by june some faculty members said they were not surprised by brockway's resignation jensen said he had an was a real teacher ac cording to warren pillsbury associate professor of economics pillsbury proposed that this would be a good time to evaluate the progress of the business college he was an outstanding leader ex tremely sensitive to the needs of faculty and students said john mcnamara associate professor of economics university bans campus delivery of mollie's pizza by cindy tapper a university ban on mollies pizzeria delivery trucks has led to a total cutoff of pizza deliveries on campus university officials banned the mollies trucks because of numerous student complaints about noise and traffic violations robert reeves assistant dean of students said these misdemeanors included reckless driving speeding running of stop signs and disturbing the peace he said the owner of lehigh pizza mike koukias subsequently decided to stop delivering his pizzas in a show of sym pathy for mollies plight complaints against mollies stemmed from the evening of sept 6 reeves said sgt robert ashburner of the campus police said he observed the truck driving along the back road to dravo after making the deliveries the truck exceeded the speed limit on its way to the centennial ii complex the driver then parked in a no parking zone against traffic ashburner said in addition ashburner found both front tires completely bald the vehicle should not even have been on the road he said ashburner asked the delivery man to leave the campus the owner of mollies pizzeria sergio torres met with ashburner the same evening and assured him all complaints would be acted upon mollies
