brockway announced friday that he will resign as dean of the college of business and economics at the end of the 1977-78 academic year brockway said he in tends to return to full-time teaching at the university being a dean is not a career it's an interruption of academic life brockway said he served for three years as dean of the university of detroit school of law before assuming his present position at the university in 1971 i was getting to the point that my profession as an academic was slipping brockway said i never thought that the job as an administrator would be a career he continued brockway said his primary interest has always been teaching research and scholarship in the field of law to continue longer as a dean would be to abandon academics for a career as a professional administrator he said with sincere regret we have accepted dean brock way's decision to resign albert zettlemoyer vice president and provost said a search committee for a successor is currently being formulated james hobbs professor of management and finance and finn jensen chairman of the department of economics will be co chairman of the committee he said the committee will be encouraged to find someone inside if possible zettlemoyer said however the search may be conducted outside the university as well he ad ded brockway made his announcement at friday's business college faculty meeting praising the faculty brockway said we have worked well together he said that although the college has become a strong and financially productive part of the university many problems remain especially in providing...a greater variety of courses and smaller classes president lewis and dr zettlemoyer are well aware of these problems and will i'm certain support my successor's efforts to maintain the reputation of the college as one of the finest undergraduate business colleges in the east brockway said brockway joined the university faculty as an assistant professor of business law in 1963 he was promoted to associate professor and chairman of the department of management and finance in 1967 in 1968 brockway taught at the university of detroit law school as a visiting professor he was named dean of the school a year later brockway has been honored twice for teaching at the university in 1967 he received the lindback foundation award for junior staff and in 1976 he received the lind back award for distinguished teaching among senior staff brian brockway superman gavin called on to solve legal complexities by michele macdonald f man in the news \ when the university is faced with strictly confidential top priority or complex legal questions one man usually is called on for the answers this administrative superman is not the president nor any of the seven vice presi dents as might be expected he is the free agent of the university staff the president's executive consultant that man is austin gavin i'm relatively independent gavin said recently a considerable amount of my work is confidential i receive special assignments from the president and work on lots of projects i'm sort of a free agent he added when the recent false-grades incident at the university was discovered gavin was assigned the task of coordinating the in vestigation at his insistence the matter was completely brought into the open i brought it in the open because it was going to come out anyway he explained and we did not want any implication that we were trying to cover it up that would have made it much worse besides he continued that's part of my philosophy you should tell as much as you can without hurting the university gavin said he hopes a policy of openness will continue at the university times have changed he said the university is a place where people should deal openly and honestly with each other it is certainly not an institution that should hold all its cards close to its vest the cheating incident can be over emphasized and is certainly not repre sentative of lehigh gavin said as far as we know it hasn't happened before it involved relatively few students and the system will be changed so it won't happen again he said the university must preserve its reputation which is lehigh's major asset he emphasized your diplomas mean so much more because of that reputation gavin came to the university at president deming lewis request after retiring from his post as executive vice president at pennsylvania power and light co in addition to working with the president and vice presidents gavin is the legal liaison with the university attorneys he has worked closely with faculty members and their problems was chairman of the committee that worked on title ix regulations and now is starting work with a forum committee to establish rules for tuition increases • i thoroughly enjoy my work gavin said how effective i am well i guess you would have to ask those i work for one of gavin's main concerns is developing communications and under standing among the various sectors of the university we want students and faculty to have a better appreciation of the problems that must be coped with he stressed in addition to campus activities gavin also has been associated with many community projects currently he heads the transition committee as lehigh county changes its government to home rule for the future gavin predicted the university will suffer as inflation con tinues to rise it will survive however and perhaps be even stronger in the long austin gavin new highrise plan to call for 7 stories students only by joanne woolsey a seven-story building which would house only university students and commercial interests has been announced as the revised plan for a complex to be built on the site of the college theater on west fourth street a tentative 20-year lease by the university is being con sidered preston parr dean and vice president for student affairs made the announce ment at a recent forum student life subcommittee meeting parr also said the university will decide in a few weeks whether to lease the residential space plans for the complex will be completed near the end of the month he noted if the university ap proves the plans an agreement will be signed to lease the building the plaza housing project as the complex will be known would provide the university with 200 additional housing spaces if the lease is signed the complex is scheduled to be com pleted by the fall of 1978 five floors of the highrise will have 10 suites each which would house four people each the ground floor will house a bank while the second floor will include stores a student dining room and a snack bar in previous plans the complex was to have had 11 stories several were allotted for commercial use the rest reserved for residential use by both university students and area residents the complex also will be suitable for conversion into private apartments or office space in the future parr said if an agreement is reached all of the residential space would be rented by the university regardless of whether all of the rooms are used he added the university purchased the college theater with the intention of holding on to it until a suitable plan was developed by a private firm it was not originally intended for university use because the property was outside the campus perimeter parr said parr told the subcommittee the adminis tration has no doubt additional housing in the future will be needed assuming un dergraduate enrollment remains at 4,000 the residence halls system still will be crowded he said bishopthorpe and smags were used as interim housing alternatives until new housing could be built under a feasible plan parr explained the lease for bishopthorpe is scheduled to run out in the near future while the cost of buying and renovating old buildings would be economically prohibitive he explained the city of bethlehem will finance the project's construction if an
