lehigh university brown and white vol 74 — no 48 bethlehem pa — friday may 10 1963 866-0331 209 ud's go to 123 students during april discipline action in the largest single series of disciplinary actions taken this academic year the university committee on discipline handed out a total of 209 demerits to 123 students during april actions as a result of hearings which began late last year and contin ued until april the committee this week released the record of disci plinary actions taken during that period two demerits were given to each of the 75 students found guilty of what the committee re port termed culpable error in fil ing record of birth date one year or more in advance of his own for use on university identification card . . " the students were also reprimanded and warned against further error of this kind for culpable error in filing in correct record of birth date for use on id cards seven students were formally reprimanded by the discipline committee a junior mechanical engineer was formally reprimanded by the discipline committee for negli gence in permitting incorrect birth date to enter university record and to remain on univer city identification card a junior arts man was placed on permanent disciplinary proba tion and given final warning for extensive misuse of telephone service in the university center and elsewhere and thereby the subject of disciplinary action for the second time for improper removal of an other student's overcoat from a university center rack an f'67 engineer was reprimanded warned and assessed three dis ciplinary demerits for a repeated instance of disor derly conduct while under the in fluence of alcohol a first-sem ester senior businessman was again suspended from the uni versity contingent on his filing a petition for reinstatement he must agree to limit all future campus activity to the lower campus from 8 a m to 5 p m monday through saturday reinstatement will be on per manent disciplinary probation with a selected faculty member of the discipline committee to serve as parole officer with all necessary authority delegated by the committee seven students were assessed one disciplinary demerit for off campus conduct in disregard of good order and tending to bring the good name of lehigh univer sity in public disrepute for repeated violations of parking and traffic regulations 12 students were assessed one de merit each a sophomore arts man has been formally reprimanded by the dis cipline committee for neglect of responsibility in permitting trans fer to use of another of his dining service identification card mark ed and issued as not trans ferable for unauthorized use of slides belonging to the department of bi ology a freshman arts man was assessed two demerits a first-semester freshman arts major was suspended from the university until at least the spring 1964 semester for unau thorized removal of 27 slides from the department of biology he was also assessed a demerit on recommendation of the fresh man disciplinary board for delib erate disregard of university reg ulations governing possession of alcoholic beverages in students residence halls and fraternity houses a sophomore businessman was assessed a demerit and charged 2.75 for meals for misuse of 1 another student's dining service identification card and 2 still another student's ds/id card number thereby obtaining meals without payment for use of alcoholic bever ages in students residence halls in disregard of the governing reg ulation a frosh arts major was assessed one demerit an f'6s businessman was form ally reprimanded by the dean of students for operating a motor scronton slated to talk june 10 the honorable william w scran ton governor of the common wealth of pennsylvania will de liver the address at the 95th com mencement exercises in eugene gifford grace hall president harvey a neville will confer honorary degrees upon governor scranton w cordes snyder jr an american business leader and chairman and presi dent of blaw-knox co pitts burgh pa and dr walter o snelling internationally known in ventor chemist and explosives specialist who is recognized as the father of the liquified petro leum gas industry governor scranton will be awarded the honorary degree of doctor of laws while snyder will receive the doctor of engineering and dr snelling the doctor of sci ence during the exercises dr neville will also confer bachelor's degrees upon more than 500 seniors of the colleges of arts and science busi ness administration and engineer ing and advanced degrees upon approximately 175 students of the graduate school born in the town named after his family scranton attended yale university where he received his bachelor of arts degree in 1939 and later went to yale law school where he received an ll.b in 1946 from 1941 to 1945 he served as an air force pilot and operations officer he left active duty with the rank of captain and is present ly major in the air force reserve a year after graduation from law school scranton joined the law firm of o'malley harris warren & hill as a troubleshooter he joined the team that worked until 1952 to revitalize international textbook co division of inter national correspondence schools headquartered in scranton pa by 1949 he had been named a vice president and director when revitalization program had been completed successfully scranton became director of the scranton-lackawanna trust com pany later merged into north eastern national bank and trust co and later president in 1954 other firms he has served as a it's snowing pam-phe-lets — hundreds of army rotc pamphlets take to the air with an assist from 400 rioting lafayette students the angry eastonians took to violence in protest of a scheduled rotc compulsory inspection to be held wednesday burning and plundering as they went the students were cowed back to their dorms by their dean of students gov william w scranton two professors get promotion two members of the faculty have been advanced to the rank of distinguished professor for their outstanding teaching and services to the university prof john j karakash head of the department of electrical en gineering and prof a everett pifcher head of the department of mathematics have been hon ored funds to endow the two dis tinguished professorships were provided by the lehigh annual giving campaigns of the last two years a native of istanbul turkey prof karakash has taught and conducted research in electronics and communications he is cur rently researching digital systems rotc riot rocks easton by mel snyder more than 40 angry lafayete college students rioted on their campus at 9 p.m tuesday the stu dents protesting the compulsory rotc inspection to be held the following day burned huge bonfires plundered rotc headquarters then stormed into easton's residential area the riot was evidently planned days in advance though the various living groups were not notified until a few hours before an anonymous telephone caller told each fraternity and dorm group to appear on the quad at the designated time for an rotc demonstration at zero-hour hundreds of whooping lafayette men poured out of marquis soles south college and other dorms some carrying hay bales of un known origin the bales were quickly stacked in front of pardee hall lafayette's administration building and in front of the south college dorms where they were set on fire while easton firemen were being summoned to extinguish the flames the mob's leaders took the rioters across nearby route 115 the rioters held up traffic for blocks while sev eral students smashed their way into rotc head quarters and stole about 25 worth of pamphlets the pilferers then ripped the pamphlets to confetti and showered the highway about 100 of the students then left the imme diate college area and shouting we hate rot sy ran into the nearby residential area in search of the home of major brady l kunkle a particu larly unpopular rotc instructor as the students arrived at the major's home dr charles c cole dean of students confronted the group and told them to return to the campus imme diately the students sat down in the street to re ceive the dean's reprimand during the night vandalism-minded students ex pressed their wrath with paint brushes and kero sene at dawn officials found fisher field's stands and pressbox covered with painted signs and a huge down with rotc burned into the grass in a message to the student body dean cole said this is not the proper way to register your protest against rotc and this will certainly not better the relations between lafayette college and the citi zens of easton see scranton page 3
