lg appointments are effective sept 1 in the area of research george r jenkins director of the insti tute of research has been p-*o moted from associate professor to full professor of geology effec tive july 1 dr paul c paris as sist nt di ector of the institute of research has been elevated from the rank of assistant profes sor to associate professor of mechanics and robert s tayio director of the center for the in formation sciences has been pro foted from assistant p-ofessor to isociate professor dr paris's appointment is effec tive sept 1 while taylor's takes effect july 1 other assistant professors ele vated to the rank of associate pro fessor effective sept 1 are dr bhaskar k ghosh department of mathematics dr leon e krouse department of finance dr rob ert t folk department of phy sics dr william e schiesser department of chemical engin eering dr edward h kottcamp department of metallurgical en gineering dr george c m sih department of mechanics and max d snider department of marketing professor snider will continue as assistant to the dean of the college of business administra tion dr benz a member of the uni versity faculty for three years is currently pathologist and director of the laboratory at st luke's hos pital he was a fellow in pathol ogy at the mayo foundation from 1949-53 and has been a member of the executive committees of the pennsylvania association of clini cal pathologists and of the penn sylvania association of blood banks since 1961 dr cowherd is a specialist in 19th century english history es pecially british social policy his book the politics of english dis sent was published by new york university press in 1956 and was also brought out in london in 1959 by epworth dr van erde specialized in 17th and 18th century french lit erature from 1954-59 he served rotc cadets attend 3-day training bivouac over 35 junior and sophomore army rotc cadets from lehigh spent friday saturday and sunday attending the annual pershing rifle and advanced rotc bivouac at tobyhanna army depot toby hanna pa the advanced cadets participated in the weekend activity as part of preparation for six weeks of summer carntp which they will attend during june and july nd the sophomores volunteered to attend the bivouac for additional experience in tactical field operations two night tactical operations were carried out by the cadet units a night reconnaissance patrol on friday and a convoy ambush on sat urday night supervising officers for the weekend operation were assistant pro fessors of military science maj henry r beganie and capt theodore d risch it col fred w schumacher professor of military science observed operations saturday and sunday 3 faculty members get leave for research three faculty members have been granted leaves to conduct advanced studies and research projects in this country and abroad prof a rcy eckhardt head of the department of religion has been awarded a lilly endowment grant to conduct studies in england and europe on contemporary jewish-christian relations the one-year grant begins in july 1963 dr john haight jr assistant professor of his tory has been awarded a social science research council grant for one year effective july 1963 he will conduct research in the united states and eng land on american aid to britain prior to pearl prof rocco j tresolini head of the depart ment of government will be on leave during the first semester of the 1963-64 academic year to com plete a long-range study of the supreme court and civil liberties dr eckhardt is the author of the surge of piety in america and christianity and the chil dren of israel dr haight has had articles pub lished in numerous historical journals including journal of modern history dr tresolini is the author of american constitutional law and was a contributor to cases in state and local govern sheliermate no 12 helen — muhlenberg is the academic home of this week's pretty sheltermate helen is a sophomore in berg's liberal arts school see six page 4
