nationally known and local collegiate entertainers will be held at 2:30 p.m sunday in packard laboratory auditorium soloists and groups from cedar crest lafayette muhlenberg mor avian and lehigh will be presented at the program held primarily for the benefit of students from lehigh valley colleges a guitar contest starting at noon will precede the program win ner of the contest will be awarded a guitar courtesy of c f martin and co nazareth lightnin hopkins and ramblin jack elliott are the national en tertainers scheduled to appear on the program lehigh will provide the rumrunners and the whiskey sours both student groups the double a's of muhlenberg and the lafayette string band are also scheduled to appear cedar crest will be represented by bob bie kulp lehigh valley entertainers the willis meyers family of radio sta tion wsan fame will also take part in the program lehigh students win art prizes for fifth year james r wood 63 craig c reheis 64 and andrew jansons 64 took the top three awards at the intercollegiate art exhibit lafayette college last week this gave lehigh its fifth consecutive first place in the annual exhibit wood took first prize for his oil entitled the idiot beheis won second prize for his oil paint by the number and janson's oil chairman of the board received third prize forty-five pictures were entered by students of five lehigh valley colleges and will remain on dis play at lafayette college in the museum of kirby hall until may 12 richard j redd assistant pro fessor of fine arts was awarded the 100 prize for the best abs tract painting in the walter e baum memorial exhibition at the baum school in allentown the winning painting is an encaustic utilizing textures of hot wax en titled the cruelest month lehigh seeks 2 million urban renewal proiect would condemn 3 blocks the university's plan for a 2.1 million urban renewal program out of which would spring a new college of arts and sciences a graduate residence hall and other buildings as well as a city recreation area will require at least six months for federal approval key to the plan unveiled tuesday by vice pres ident paul j franz would be a 1.2 million federal urban renewal administration grant how soon the grant is secured depends on how quickly local bodies act said warren gould direc tor of development adding that it could be sooner than six months the so-called packer avenue project part of lehigh's long-range centennial building program would also depend on the cooperation of the city of bethlehem and the bethlehem city area school district everything would be leveled in that three-block area except for central and broughal junior high schools and st peter's church university officials said the local school board would benefit because a school playground will be included in the plan also additional parking facilities will be con structed on the periphery of the lower campus gould said that upon completion of the present plan no driving will be allowed on the lower cam pus the two dormitories included in the campus plan are expected to be for graduate students accord ing to gould one dorm may be for married grad students immediately to the east of the packer avenue project is the butler street urban renewal project site of a 2.7 million metallurgy chemical engineering laboratory the butler project is also tied directly to the centennial building program costs of the proposed project are as follows total cost for the project will be about 2.1 million the federal urban renewal authority will be asked to provide 1.2 million the commonwealth of pennsylvania will be asked for 310,0000 the university has already spent 350,000 to purchase properties within the development area le high also will put up been submitted by the arcadia freshman life committee to preston parr associate dean of students the committee proposed this change in university regulations for the fall 1963 semester as one of a variety of steps in improving frosh social life committee chair man v rodger digilio 64 said dates for this experiment all saturdays are sept 28 2-5 p.m and oct 12 nov 2 and nov 23 from after the football game until 5:30 p.m the first date is the af ternoon before a concert open sections according to the proposal should be handled on a petition system similar to that used for fraternity and residence halls parties if a freshman section wished to be open for one of specified times it would submit a petition and as sume through its officers respon sibility for its conduct during the period
