lehigh university brown and white vol 74 — no 43 bethlehem pa — friday april 19 1963 866-0331 carl mcconnell elected by ifc other officers named carl mcconnell 64 of beta theta pi has been elected president of the interfraternity council other officers elected at the meeting monday night were don mattson t 4 of delta tail delta vice president joe griffiths 64 of kappa alpha treasurer and scott lav 64 of sigma phi secretary in other business enacted at the meeting ifc made plans to spon sor the initial speaker of next year's cooperative lecture series ifc the series single biggest contributor 1,000 will sponsor a national known news analyst from either tv radio or the pre?s ifc also voted 1o contribute 300 to help sponsor a folk music festi val to be held free of charge on campus may 5 the money will be obtained by cutting each house's ifc concert rebate by ten dollars the concert sponsored by the cosmopolitan ciub ifc and possib'v ekc will feature lightning hopkins who is considered the best negro blues singer and jack elliot called the best white blues singer in addition there will slto be amateur groups from lehigh la fayette cedar crest muhlenberg and princeton the purpose of the concert is to stimulate interest in folk music in the lehigh valley local radio stations have already agreed to publicize the concert at no charge to tho sponsors the concert wil be held in eith er the freshman or taylor quad packer auditorium or grace hall depending on the area in which the concert is publicized carl l mcconnell t!-ie cli v at night — a cle^r spring night brings the city of lights to brilliant life when viewed from the lookout special b&w photo by mcl snyder james r wood to present first solo art display james r wood 63 will present the first one-man art show on campus by a lehigh student to mo row at 8:15 p.m in grace hall hr h>w will be held in con junction with the stravinsky con cert end is sponsored by the mu sic department wood designed the poster used to advertise this musical event several large oil paintings w ter colors drawings and wood block prints comprise the exhibit they were all completed within the last two years richard redd assistant profes sor of fine arts described wood's work as characterized by a biza re sense of humor which runs from gentle whimsy to macabre horror his enthusiasm for vari ous contemporary artists is re flected in his work he can be come hooked on ben shahn or paul klee like others become hooked on bridge folk singing or cocaine remarkably enough the products of his imagination are personal and original one painting shows a small bald figure vacuously staring in space while he sniffs a rose he is held up by two other bald figures who look away from their weightless burden wood has entitled the work the idiot his prizes and awards include first prize in the lehigh valley in fercollegiate art show at mor avian in 1962 for watercolor and the yeyo fabianni award for modern painting in the same year lehigh review the lehigh review student literary magazine will be circu lated with the may 3 brown and white this will be the third is sue of the magazine and the sec ond this year residence halls prices to be raised next year students living in residence halls next year will be paying 70 more for room and board in a statement released wednesday through the office of the director of residence halls dean c b campbell said all residence hall fees will be in creased 20 per semester also the statement said a 15 per semester in crease in dining plans will become effective — providing meals through the final examination per iod ending with the noon meal of the last day of examinations the increase will raise rentals in mcclintic-mar shall house to 180 per semester taylor kail will be increased to 130 and the freshman houses to 170 campbell noted that all operating expenses and housekeeping and maintenance wages have been steadily rising and the increased rental is needed to meet these costs despite this increase he added residence halls rates are modest compared to many other institu tions offering comparable services and accomoda tions the increase in board to cover the examination period was recommended by the sub-committee on dining and reflects students wishes in the mat ter greater convenience and service for the student is offered by the new dining plan campbell said also during the examination period the asa packer dining room will remain open for the fac ulty joint glee club concert tomorrow the university of rochester women's glee club and the le high glee club will present a joint concert at 8:15 p.m tomorrow in grace hall igor stravinsky is the composer of two of the three works in the program the two glee clubs will join in presenting the sol dier's tale and symphony of the psalms by the famed compos er a third work emanuel chab rier's a la musique will be pre sented by the university of rochester women's glee club un der the direction of allan ross ; ssociate director of the glee club the soldier's tale will be played by a group of seven instru mentalists all but one represent ing the university of rochester two dancers will appear in four of the nine movements of the com position dr ward woodbury di rector of music at rochester will conduct dr robert b cutler head of the department of music will con duct the combined choruses in the presentation of symphony of psalms based on the vulgate version of three psalms the work will be sung in latin an orches tra composed of students from le high and professional musicians will assist the choruses linda kellner president of the en's glee club will appear as soloist in the rendition of a la musique the text of a la mu sique was written by edmund rostand author of cyrano de bergerac presented by the a n cleaver memorial concert series such concerts are made possible by an endowment fund established in the will of elizabeth k cleaver in 1931 the fund was created to stimulate interest in music and sponsor an appreciative under standing of musical composition prof cutler and the department of music make the arrangements for the cleaver concert series founded in 1905 the university of rochester women's glee club became active in the 1930's under the direction of theodore fitch evelyn meyers directed the efforts of the glee club during the 19405 in 1954 dr woodbury became the director of music on the univer sity of rochester river campus the women's glee club has ap peared in performances with the university of toronto syracuse university and colgate univer sity glee clubs the women traveled to dart mouth and hamilton colleges in 1961 to participate in perform ances of mozart's coronation mass the highly varied repetoire of the women's glee club includes arthur honegger's king david howlard hanson's cherubic hymn mendelssohn's oratorio elijah and handel's messiah they have performed other works ranging from madrigals to mod ern canons earlier this month they ap peared with the university of rochester men's glee club in a festival performance of sym phony of psalms at rochester dr woodbury who received his b.a from western state college gunnison colo completed his graduate work at the university of rochester during the 1953 and 1954 seasons he was conduc tor of the opera under the stars sponsored by the city of rochester summer theater he is a master of such instru ments as the violin viola flute and french horn his conducting repetoire of operas includes la boheme the marriage of fig aro cosi fan tutti and la traviata dr woodbury has written ar ticles for the university of rochester press the journal of resea-ch in music education and the music educator's journal students to be asked to set arcadia's role do the lehigh students want arcadia to concern itself with off campus issues arcadia will place this question before the student body in a poll to be conducted in conjunction with the class elections in may discussion of the issue at the apr 18 meeting of arcadia was brought about by an nsa request for food for negro residents of le fiore county mississippi in other business arcadia voted to communicate to university authorities its concern over the existence of fire hazards on campus as pointed up by the picture of a defective fire hose in the apr 9 is sue of the brown and white arcadia also appointed roger digilio 64 to prepare factual re ports of student government meetings for publication in the b&w the decision was reached following discussion as to whether this report should be an expression of arcadia's opinions or simply a means of informing students of proceedings following its regular meeting arcedia went into closed session to consider nominations for flagpole day awards
