lehigh university brown and white vol 74 - mmmmm no 41 bethlehem pa - friday april 12 1963 866-0331 upi analyst to speak foreign affairs meeting phil newsom foreign news analyst for united press interna tional will be the principal speaker at the third annual in ternational affairs institute a one-day seminar porviding a gov ernment-citizen conference being held on campus tomorrow the institute is under the spon sorship of the foreign policy asso ciation of the lehigh valley dr george d harmon professor of american history and head of the department of history is the con ference chairman the program is designed to present a concentrated opportu nity for gaining a wide range of information concerning five inter national topics including the common market sino-sovict re lations latin america and the alliance for progress india and southeast asia and algeria and arab consolidation participants in the conference are a group of prominent speak ers from the news media busi ness universities and the u s department of state the agenda for the all-day con ference includes two morning panel discussions all sessions will be held in the university center newsom is a veteran reporter and editor who has served in both the domestic and foreign fields his column foreign news com mentary appears regularly in upi client newspapers from coast to coast in april 1962 newsom received the overseas press club award for the best consistent interpreta tion of foreign news develop ments newsom was appointed to his post in 1960 after eight years as foreign editor at upl's headquar ters in new york lhis handling of the news for three critical years of world war ii was one achieve ment that prompted upi to ap point him its foreign editor the first morning panel of the institute will direct its attention to the topic the common mar ket the moderator will be dr finn b jensen professor of econ omics other panel members are dr teachers intern program slated for summer 63 four lohigh valley school dis tric s are cooperating with the teaching intern program whicii the university will launch with the 1963 summer session lehigh students may apply for the program at the office of the department of education until april 19 according to dr john a stocps professor and head of the department cooperating districts are east on area school district bethle hem area school district pali sades joint school district and the school district of the city of allentown the program is designed to train graduates of accredted libe ein sommernachtstraum — howard virkler 63 as thisbe mourns the loss of her lover in one of the german club excerpts duke and coasters to play for houseparty duke ellington and his band and the coasters will team up to set grace hall swinging and rock ing from 9 p.m - 1 a.m aphil 26 at the spring houseparty dance ellington will provide music on the lower floor and the comical coasters will serenade couples on the hall's upper floor theme for the night will be sophisticated moments named for ellington's famed sophisti cated lady tickets for the opening house party event will cost 6 per cou ple door-to-door sales to frosh will begin april 15 fraternities may pick up their tickets at the student activities desk on april 22 ellington is best known in ad dition to the theme for such songs as mood indigo it don t mean a thing if it ain't got that swing solitude and cara van the duke and his band have performed at many notable jazz outposts including basin street east newport jazz festival and birdland the coasters are best known for offbeat rock and roll numbers they have made hits with charlie brown get a job yakkity yak and short shorts alan c eckbreth is chairman of the affair sponsored by the class of 1964 si levin is in charge of publicity willis h mitchell heads ticket sales duke ellington hp queen pix due by april 79 deadline for pictures submitted for the houseparty queen con test will be next friday april 19 pictures are to be submitted to the student activities desk at the university center or to si levin box 39 preliminary elimination of the pictures will be made saturday april 20 students will then vote for the finalists on the following1 wednesday from 9:30 a.m to 5:30 p.m in front of the post office of the university center official ballots for the finalists will be published in the brown and white houseparty queen committee members will supervise the balloting and stamp each voter's i.d after each vote is cast from the initial list of contestants the top four will be published in the brown and white final judging of the four girls will take place that friday at the spring houseparty dance by duke elling ton and the chaperones in grace hall photos submitted for the contest must be at least 2 by y a ". particulars concerning the contestant's date name and escort's liv ing group must be given on a separate sheet of paper which should be handed in with the photograph all pictures must be portrait photographs five arrested for vandalism five lehigh freshmen were arrested by beth lehem city police in two separate incidents last weekend both involved damage to bethlehem parking meters at 12:45 a.m saturday night frederick alcaro and john lawson both of dravo were picked up by police near the boyd theatre when according to police reports an officer in a prowl car spotted alcaro as he began yanking at the meter as if he were trying to rip it out and then began hitting it with his fist the two men were taken to police headquarters were charged with disorderly conduct and were released after posting 59 bail apiece five minutes after the one squad car picked up alcaro and lawson on broad st another car found a parking meter on n new near market torn out of the ground the two officers in the car replaced the meter in its hole and reported that the concrete base would have to be repaired at 10:40 the following night three other fresh men michael ghourdjian john watson and william cobb all of drinker iv were arrested as they moved the same meter concrete base included along new st the police report reads these men stated they were going to carry the meter to the middle of the new st bridge the three were held on charge of breach of the peace and were released after pay ing 300 bail apiece ghourdjian stated that he and the two others were going from the university to an unnamed destination when they came upon the loose parking meter he said they had carried it about ten feet when the police picked them up wilhelm tell presented wed excerpts from em sommer nachtstraum romeo und ju the third annual presentations of lia and wilhelm tell were the german club tuesday and wednesday night arthur p gardner assistant professor of german and faculty advisor to the club wrote and translated an original interpreta tion of romeo und julia es pecially for the club about forty different people participated in the fifty stag roles alone see seminar page 2 see intern page 5
