lehigh university brown and white vol 74 — no 39 bethlehem pa friday april 5 1963 866-0331 sobine vaccine given to 1600 at health center among the first of 1,600 mem bers of the university community to receive sabin polio vaccine at the health center wednesday was dr harvey a neville president the line continued to flow quick ly through the vaccination center from 9 a.m to 4:30 p.m resulting in what associate health director joseph g pompoiiio termed a good turnout pomponio said that the final fig ure of 1,600 included students fac ulty and staff members the sabin vaccine has been available to lehigh and north amp-ton county residents recently in the mass-imunization program conducted by the local northamp ton county medical association a"ea residents received the first of three doses of the oral vaccine throughout the lehigh valley sunday and this factor in part ac counted for the failure of many persons to appear for the univer sity vaccine program wednesday pomponio said arcadians reject aid for negroes arcadia wednesday night turned down a national student asso ciation proposal to send aid to negro residents in leflore county miss issippi the arcadians turned down a resolution to send president michael re;ch 64 to president harvey a neville in an attempt to change the administration's decision not to allow student participation when the resolution was defeated the nsa proposal was abandoned under the nsa proposal students would agree to abstain from a meal the foodstuffs saved thereby being sent to the negroes the editor of the brown and white had previously investigated the possibility of participating the dining service had agreed to con sider the idea and the teamsters union and nsa would transport the foodstuffs to mississippi president neville however indicated he felt the proposal would not be workable at the university on the basis of his own and dr charles a seidle's analysis of the situation the issue was brought before arcadia by the nsa committee chair man william wood 64 in an attempt to change the administration's stand the majority of the members however felt that because this was an off-campus controversy and because they did not feel they had enough student support opposition to neville would be futile petitions for class officers will be available april 10 and must be turned in by april 23 the election will be held may 8 9 and 10 re sults will be announced on flagpole day may 13 freshmen to hear shofer lt governor lt governor raymond p shai er of pennsylvania will be the guest speaker at a dinner-meeting of the class of 1965 at 6:30 p.m april 11 in hotel bethlehem shafer will discuss the college student in relation to a future in politics he will be introduced by class president john h harper jr university administrative offi cers and faculty who have been invited to the annual banquet in clude dr harvey a neville pres ident paul j franz vice presi dent for development and public relations and class adviser dr glenn j christensen vice presi dent and provost and dr charles a seidle vice president for ed ministration j douglas leith dean of students preston parr associate dean of students dr rocco j tresolini head of the department of government and samuel i connor director of pub lic information audience for shafer's talk will be limited to 200 sophomores may secure tickets for 1 the class is underwriting 75 of the cost of each admission the lieutenant governor serves as president of the state senate chairman of the board of pardons and has been acting as chairman of the governor's legislative policy committee born in new castle shafer was graduated from allegheny cum laude he was elected to phi beta kappa national shcolastic honor ary and was nominated for a rhodes scholarship he was later graduated from the yale law school shafer was admitted to practice in the state courts of pennsylvania and new york and the federal court lt gov raymond p shafer honors program planned for fail a completely revamped honors program which allows honor stu dents to set their own fast pace and creates university scholars will be introduced at lehigh n,ext fall the comprehensive honors pro gram will enable honor students to waive many undergraduate pre requisites to advanced and grad uate courses and independent study the new program announced today by d glenn j christen sn vice president and provost lias been approved by the faculty all existing honors programs in the three university colleges — arts and science engineering and usiness administration — are coordinated under the program the program distinguishes be tween freshmen and sophomore honor students and junior and sen ior honor students juniors and seniors have greater freedom honors opportunities for under graduates consist essentially of voluntary enrollment in honors sections — now called s sec tions — in freshman courses lehigh to host 300 candidates lemgh will be host to more than 300 secondary school stu dents who have bean offered ad mission to this fall's freshman class at the first of two candi dates days tomorrow a second candidates day is scheduled for april 23 when a sim ilar group of students will visit the campus the freshman class will be limited to 158 students the two open houses are de signed to give selected candidates a better opportunity to become ac quainted with the university than is possible during individual vis its one of the features of the pro gram will be the showing of wathcman on the mountain prize-winning color film about le lugli samuel h missmer director of admission will introduce the movie members of phi eta sigma na tional freshman scholastic honor ary will join members of the uni versity band and of the lehigh chapter of alpha phi omega na tional service fraternity in serv ing as guides for campus tours which will begin at 9:30 a.m dr charles a seidle vice-pres ident for admnistration will wel come the first group of secondary school seniors from eleven states and canada opportunities in the universi ty's academic programs for the 750 incoming freshmen will be outlined by deans of lehigh's three colleges at a convocaton at 11:30 a.m in packard laboratory auditorium dr w ross yates associate dean will discuss programs under the college of arts and science dr alan s foust dean of the college of engineering will brief prospec tive studentsl on the cirricula available in the college of engi neering and dr herbert m dia mond acting dean will present the offerings of the college of busi ness administration michael reich 64 president of arcadia will also address the group candidates will have an oppor tunity to confer with deans or de partmental representatives to vis it the residence halls tour the university center or
