that the nations should adopt a policy of free trade the proposition selected by the debat ing association of colleges and universities of pennsylvania at its recent meeting at harrisburg le high was not represented at the meeting but has received notice that this proposition was selected and will be used by most pennsyl vania schools this year definite decision regarding this proposition will be reached at 4 p m today at an open meeting of delta omicron theta honorary de bating society in room 406 pack ard laboratory all men interested in debating are invited to attend freshmen will be eligible for the teams the lehigh teams also may meet some teams on last year's propo sitions it is probable that lehigh will debate with cedar crest on the proposition resolved that the evils of the machine age out weigh its benefits which was used in five debates last season this year's teams will be selected before each debate and any man who shows any interest or ability will be given a chance to debate in actual competition according to prof c d macdougall coach competition now open the tryout for the teams debat ing the free trade question will be held tuesday nov 11 all should see professor macdougall before saturday oct 25 according to professor macdougall this free trade proposition is of timely inter est because of international inter est in america's new tariff the wide spread of business depression and the demand of canada and oth er british dominions that great britain buifd a tariff wall around the empire and thus abandon the centuries old policy of absolute free trade the intercollegiate debating sea son probably will begin shortly after the christmas holiday teams to take part in first semester de bates will be picked before thank giving two members of last year's de bate team will participate in an oxford split debate with two girls of cedar crest college at 8 p m monday nov 3 in dietz hall at cedar crest the subject coming just before the election period is a timely one resolved that the policies of john m hemphill are more conducive to the welfare of the people of pennsylvania than those of gifford pinchot lehigh has never before partici pated in an oxford split debate in this debate there will be a lehigh man and a cedar crest girl on ei ther side the two lehigh debaters will most probably be emanuel scob lionko and george w parsons both captains of last year debate teams although prof c d macdougall debate coach has as yet made no definite assignment last year lehigh defeated cedar crest in a radio debate on the prop osition resolved that the united states should withdraw from the kellogg peace pact due to the widespread interest and comment which this debate caused another radio broadcast is being planned on a new subject lehigh will also participate in two other intercolle giate radio debates this year if the plan of professor macdougall ma terializes two graduates wed saturday r o t c review staged today discusses application of circle diagram to transmission line local girls become wives of former lehigh students in bethlehem national colors presented to regiment in annual ceremony a bequest of 100,000 and the en tire residuary estate of dr lang don c stewardson former profes sor of philosophy is to go to le high for the purpose of establishing a chair in philosophy and increasing the salaries of professors in the de partments of latin greek and phil osophy this announcement was made thursday by newspapers in new york where the will was filed for probate the former professor died sept 6 at his home in greenwich conn the 100,000 is to be used to es tablish a trust fund in honor of his second wife which will pay the sal ary of a professor of philosophy to be known as the clara h ste wardson professor of philosophy president richards when inter viewed concerning the will of lang don c stewardson said the uni versity has been officially notified of the bequest and the conditions attended to it the will which gives the university a sum of approxi mately 100,000 provides for the establishing of a clara h steward son chair of philosophy as yet however the bequest has not been received the will has been filed in new york city and will not be pro bated for some time a part of the fund will also be used to increase the salaries of pro fessors in the philosophy latin and greek departments dr stewardson was professor and chaplin of the university from 1898 to 1903 when he left to take up the duties of president of ho bart college many old lehigh men will remember him as he was one of the most popular professors at lehigh the bequest was not unexpected by the university officials as dr stewardson had informed them of his intention to remember lehigh in his will arrangements for ac cepting the bequest and carrying out the provisions of the will be made at a later date dr stewardson came to lehigh in 1898 as professor of mental and moral philosophy in 1899 his title was changed to professor of philos ophy and he held this office until his resignation during his stay at lehigh he also served as university chaplain faculty men in recital two professors to play satur day at moravian college the senior ball committee is in novating a new idea this year in the form of a guessing contest the readers of the brown and white will have the opportunity for guess ing the name of the orchestra that will furnish the music for the sen ior ball a ballot for use in this contest has been placed on the back page of this issue and there will be another in next friday's is sue the contest is open to all stu dents except those residing in houses where there are members of the committee the winner will be awarded two complimentary tickets all ballots must be handed to frederick can be heard any evening over a popular mid west radio station between the hours of 10 p m and 1 a m the orchestra which is composed of 11 men played for the first three weeks in september 1930 on a pennsylvania circuit they are rank ed among the big 10 of orchestra circles and are wel-known in the college world the senior ball which is in the hands of a committee composed of frank r veale jr decorations the decorations will be designed by zollinger and harned and will develop a fall theme the favors will consist of a dance program in a leather case which can be used as a combination the recently completed james river bridge project will be discuss ed by mr wilson t ballard be fore the meeting of the students branch of the american society of civil engineers at 8 o'clock thurs day evening in the auditorium of packard laboratory mr ballard the vice president of the j e grei ner company consulting engineers of baltimore will illustrate his lec ture with slides the project is a bridge across the james river in virginia and was constructed at a cost of approxi mately 6,000,000 primarily to fac ilitate automobile traffic to the south the bridge is a steel struc ture having a vertical lift draw bridge it was completed in novem ber 1928 the meeting thursday night will be the first of the society's month ly meetings this semester plans for showing motion pictures bor rowed instructor in the department of latin seven lehigh students reached the circle of the scholastic elect last semester when they secured a's in every subject to give them a straight 5 average for the semester outstanding among these men is francis neuwirth arts 31 who made a 5 average both semesters of the last school year neuwirth who is captain of the cross country team is the only letter man on the list composed of the 10 high men in each class israel p goldstein arts 30 and john e freehafer eng phys 31 also made a straight 5 average for the last two semesters goldstein however was only carrying six hours of work four out of seven men who re ceived an a average last semester were juniors class of 1931 two were seniors class of 1930 and one was a freshman class of 1933 there were no study newly organized society to dis cuss diverse current topics the newly organized philosophi cal discussion group met sunday evening in drown hall to consider walter lippman's preface to mor als numbering about eight and led by mr david braun secretary of the lehigh union and prof percy hughes of the department of philosophy psychology and educa tion those present spent some two hours in an animated discussion of excerpts from mr lippman's work the meetings of which this was the first are to take place every sunday night from 7:30 to 9:30 o'clock and are designed to give students who do not take philoso phy courses an opportunity to pur sue a systematic study of that sub ject under faculty supervision prof hughes and dr t t lafferty in structor in his department are to lead and supervise the meetings mr braun plans similar sunday evening groups for discussion of several diverse topics of current in terest throughout the year chem society to meet chemical society will meet at 7:30 p m thursday oct 23 in the main lecture room of the chemistry build ing coming events passes intercepted passed com pleted but always a gettysburg man making the catch an aerial attack that left lehigh gasping in the first defeat of the season aided the bullets in the 14-0 catastrophe saturday at taylor stadium previous to this touchdown get tysburg had been strictly on the defensive an effective defense however — and had repulsed three lehigh scoring threats but the lehigh morale weakened by hav ing gettysburg complete four suc cessive passes broke and gave the visitors a decided edge in the last half gettysburg was unable to ad vance beyond midfield once dur ing the first half but found itself in the second half and the bullet scored in each of the closing per iods scores after intermission after receiving the opening kick off in the second half the gettys burg team started on their own 35 yard line combined an effective running attack with short passes and covered the remaining distance to the lehigh goal line in eight plays the second touchdown came in the closing minutes of the fourth period after a blocked punt had placed the ball on the lehigh 12 yard line anglemoyer went over for a touchdown on the next play the heavier and faster gettys burg line which the lehigh for wards had met on equal terms dur ing the first half asserted itself in the closing periods and opened wide gaps in the lehigh line through which the gettysburg backs ran with devastating effect not con tent with its running attack as a means to advance the bullets fre quently resorted to forward passes which were equally as effective as the ground plays particularly a short pass which carried no more than five yards and was successful on each attempt lehigh attack threatens after receiving ware's opening kick-off the gettysburg eleven showed the 8,000 spectators a few flashes of the attack which was to work so effectively in the second half it was only short lived for after recovering the ball the brown and white offense dominated the play in this half runs by sindel and ware the latter getting loose for a 25 yard gain brought the ball to the get tysburg 15 yard line but the bul lets line stiffened and lehigh's first chance to score was lost two incompleted passes and a fumble gave gettysburg the ball on their 10 yard line immediately after the visitors punted nora put lehigh in scor ing position again when he reeled off a 25 yard run mccloy saving a score by bringing him down with a brilliant tackle on the bullets 40 yard line a pass from ware to nora advanced the ball ten yards and ware added ten more on an end run bringing the ball to the 20 yard line the second scoring chance was lost when mcmillan in continued on page four the latest publication of the in stitute of research of lehigh uni versity is a pamphlet by frederick creedy assistant research profes sor of electrical engineering en titled the proof that the induc tion motor diagram applies to the transmission line application of the circle diagram which was first developed for the induction motor to the general net work and consequently to the trans mission line is discussed by pro fessor creedy in the pamphlet al though the double frequency power diagram is criticized for being too complicated the well-known con structions are applied to all quanti ties of interest in the transmission line he claims the elementary proofs are given of those parts of general circuit theory needed since it includes just a few lines ewing sails to asia on freighter tells of night life in singapore harry roosevelt fauth who was graduated from lehigh class of 29 as a civil engineer was married to a local girl miss caroline adelaide rufe on saturday mr and mrs fauth will make their home in newark n j where mr fauth is associated with a business con cern a bethlehem girl and a lehigh graduate were the principals of an other wedding in this city on sat urday they were miss eleanor mary walp and robert taylor mcclarin who received his degree of chemical engineering at lehigh in 1928 albert a hang of new york a lehigh graduate was best man since he was graduat ed mr mcclarin has been em ployed with an allentown firm and before he was married he lived at the bethlemem university club the couple will continue to live in bethlehem after their return from a honeymoon in canada two children added to faculty families w a nettles and g e doan are proud fathers following close on the chubby heels of the six little additions to the families of lehigh professors whose arrivals were noted recently come two more youn fellows wil liam reid nettles becames one of the household of mr and mrs hill r nettles july 27 while gilbert everett doan jr son of mr and mrs gilbert everett doan put in his appearance oct 14 mr nettles is an instructor of civil engineering dr doan is assis tant professor of metallurgy there have been eight new addi tions to the families of the faculty in half as many months mayo offers criticism modern universities over-stress cultural backgrounds aijd slight clinical training in educating fu ture doctors dr w j mayo of the mayo clinic said at the dedica tion of temple university's school of medicine wednesday the first regimental review of the lehigh university unit of the re serve officers training corps was held during the regular drill per iod 1 p m today on the upper field the unit was composed of 830 men the band lead the review the harry f w johnson post of the american legion of bethle hem presented the national colors to the unit post commander le roy knadler and several other of ficers participated in the ceremony the presentation was inaugurated several years ago to show the in terest legionnaires have in the un of october at a meeting of the board of the lehigh review held last night the resignation of edward j stack business manager was accepted graham b camden was appointed to fill the vacancy left by mr stack's resignation while ross j whitehead was appointed advertis ing manager thirteen members of the board were present and plans were dis cussed for the first issue which will appear about the nd of car finishing nineteen seconds later the rolls crossed the line on three tires and a rim the fourth tire gave up the ghost midway despite the fact that it had been put on the car only a few minutes before the race the blimp and ida i'd rather walk also ran ida burned out her brakes in an attempt to stop short at the finish the rules of the contest specified a standing start with motor run ning high test gasolfrje was pro hibited and short cuts disqualified the entry only cars eight years old or over were allowed and no cars were to be fixed repaired or ca joled before the race owners of other campus cars who feel that their speedsters can do better are invited to challenge annual races for campus cars are regular features at several western schools these events bring out cars which barely manage to cover the required distance encouraged by the audacity of president richards in driving the first packard at breakneck speed over the campus four members of the sigma phi fraternity the old cars bones a steep hill to try their motors and a down grade at the finish to give speed to the event in an apparent effort to add to the natural diffi culties of the route a cow wan dered that the nations should adopt a policy of free trade the proposition selected by the debat ing association of colleges and universities of pennsylvania at its recent meeting at harrisburg le high was application of circle diagram to transmission line local girls become wives of former lehigh students in bethlehem national colors presented to regiment in annual ceremony a bequest of 100,000 and the en tire residuary estate of dr lang don c stewardson former profes sor of philosophy is to go to le high for the purpose of establishing a chair in philosophy and increasing the salaries of professors in the de partments of latin greek and phil osophy this announcement was made thursday by newspapers in new york where the will was filed for probate the former professor died sept 6 at his home in greenwich conn the 100,000 is to be used to es tablish a trust fund in honor of his second wife which will pay the sal ary of a professor of philosophy to be known as the clara h ste wardson professor of philosophy president richards when inter viewed concerning the will of lang don c stewardson said the uni versity has been officially notified of the bequest and the conditions attended to it the will which gives the university a sum of approxi mately 100,000 provides for the establishing of a clara h steward son chair of philosophy as yet however the bequest has not been received the will has been filed in new york city and will not be pro bated for some time a part of the fund will also be used to increase the salaries of pro fessors in the philosophy latin and greek departments dr stewardson was professor and chaplin of the university from 1898 to 1903 when he left to take up the duties of president of ho bart college many old lehigh men will remember him as he was one of the most popular professors at lehigh the bequest was not unexpected by the university officials as dr stewardson had informed them of his intention to remember lehigh in his will arrangements for ac cepting the bequest and carrying out the provisions of the will be made at a later date dr stewardson came to lehigh in 1898 as professor of mental and moral philosophy in 1899 his title was changed to professor of philos ophy and he held this office until his resignation during his stay at lehigh he also served as university chaplain faculty men in recital two professors to play satur day at study newly organized society to dis cuss diverse current topics the newly organized philosophi cal discussion group met sunday evening in drown hall to consider walter lippman's preface to mor als numbering about eight and led by mr david braun secretary of the lehigh union and prof percy hughes of the department of philosophy psychology and educa tion those present spent some two hours in an animated discussion of excerpts from mr lippman's work the meetings of which this was the first are to take place every sunday night from 7:30 to 9:30 o'clock and are designed to give students who do not take philoso phy courses an opportunity to pur sue a systematic study of that sub ject under faculty supervision prof hughes and dr t t lafferty in structor in his department are to lead and lehigh gasping in the first defeat of the season aided the bullets in the 14-0 catastrophe saturday at taylor stadium previous to this touchdown get tysburg had been strictly on the defensive an effective defense however — and had repulsed three lehigh scoring threats but the lehigh morale weakened by hav ing gettysburg complete four suc cessive passes broke and gave the visitors a decided edge in the last half gettysburg was unable to ad vance beyond midfield once dur ing the first half but found itself in the second half and the bullet scored in each of the closing per iods scores after intermission after receiving the opening kick off in the second half the gettys burg team started on their own 35 yard line combined an effective running attack with short passes and covered the remaining distance to the lehigh goal line in eight plays the second touchdown came in the closing minutes of the fourth period after a blocked punt had placed the ball on the lehigh 12 yard line anglemoyer went over for a touchdown on the next play the heavier and faster gettys burg line which the lehigh for wards had met on equal terms dur ing the first half asserted itself in the closing periods and opened wide gaps in the lehigh line through which the gettysburg backs ran with devastating effect not con tent with its running attack as a means to advance the bullets fre quently resorted to forward passes which were equally as effective as the ground plays particularly a short pass which carried no more than five yards and was successful on each attempt lehigh attack threatens after receiving ware's opening kick-off the gettysburg eleven showed the 8,000 spectators a few flashes of the attack which was to work so effectively in the second half it was only short lived for after recovering the ball the brown and white offense dominated the play in this half runs by sindel and ware the latter getting loose for a 25 yard gain brought the ball to the get tysburg 15 yard line but the bul lets line stiffened and lehigh's first chance to score was lost two incompleted passes and a fumble gave gettysburg the ball on their 10 yard line immediately after the motor diagram applies to the transmission line application of the circle diagram which was first developed for the induction motor to the general net work and consequently to the trans mission line is discussed by pro fessor creedy in the pamphlet al though the double frequency power diagram is criticized for being too complicated the well-known con structions are applied to all quanti ties of car finishing nineteen seconds later the rolls crossed the line on three tires and a rim the fourth tire gave up the ghost midway despite the fact that it had been put on the car only a few minutes before the race the blimp and ida i'd rather walk also ran ida burned out her brakes in an attempt to stop short at the finish the rules of the contest specified a standing start with motor run ning high test gasolfrje was pro hibited and short cuts disqualified the entry only cars eight years old or over were allowed and no cars were to be fixed repaired or ca joled before the race owners of other campus cars who feel that their speedsters can do better are invited to challenge annual races for campus cars are regular features at several western schools these events bring out cars which
