crowded carnegie hall the combined concert bands of lehigh and columbia on friday night pre sented a program which could only be viewed as outstanding it took no particularly acute powers of observation for anyone in the famed hall to realize that the performance was well received the selections for the evening were generally well-chosen how ever the program was marred by occasional lack of consideration for the audience's unfamiliarity with some numbers although program notes may have been intended to assist the uncultured listener the especially long three parts of berlioz sym phonic funebre et triomphale opus 15 proved to be the least stimulating portion of the perform ance this is not to say that the selec tion was not properly rendered nor that the combined bands did berlioz any injustice but the au dience's inattentiveness during the last 10 or 15 minutes of work would seem to indicate that the presentation was too uninteresting the only criticism heard from the audience after the program was that the performance dragged occasionally transition from ponderous and unfamiliar compositions to popular and quick-moving march music inevit ably results in unevenness in a program no matter how well pre sented directors elkus and dann were also faced with the problem of an audience considerably more mixed carnegie concert — lehigh band director jonathan elkus wields the baton at the joint concept of the lehigh and columbia bands in new york's carnegie hall last friday night a near-capacity crowd of students and alumni of the two schools filled the famous hall for the fete car demolished three lehigh freshmen and iheir muhlenberg dates were in volved in a collision which de molished their car early sunday morning robert d ness driver of the car said that all but one of the students were taken to the hospi tal in an ambulance but were re leased after treatment he said that the group was re turning to muhlenberg from le high at about 45 mph in a 50 mph zone when all of a sudden there was a flashing red light in front of me the accident he said oc curred at the intersection of cedar crest blvd and hamilton blvd about 12:30 a m sunday ness said he swerved to avoid hitting a car in front of him and hit the front end of another car forcing that car over into a third he said his car spun around and came to rest upright after appar ently rolling over and crushing the roof one of the girls was thrown from the rear seat and landed in a ditch unconscious ness said add ing that he ended up on the rear floor he said that one wheel came to rest on the opposite side of the road and a seat was found in a ditch lehigh review to be distributed on march 1 varied content the lehigh review will be distributed with the brown and white friday march 1 said barry fry editor-in-chief of the mag azine the magazine published twice each academic year carries poetry essays articles and book reviews written by students and faculty members according to the reviews editorial board work on the spring issue is under way students and faculty members have been urged to submit contributions before march 15 to lehigh review box 63 or barry fry box 751 the editorial board consists of six editors two from each college of the university and three faculty advisors one from each college george doty director of publications is technical advisor moho-to-mountain process outlined dr donald j ryan head of the department of geology discussed mountain building in his senior lecture series presentation friday night he described the continuous flux of processes which have trans formed the crust of the earth by creating and destroying mountains and attributed the general process of mountain building to deforma tion originating in the moho region of the earth's surface dr ryan discredited the prevalent notion that a mountain is any piece of land higher than its adjacent territory actually he said a mountain is an elevated region supported by severely deformed up heaved rock the underlying region of de formed rock is the moho region he said the rock in this region is deformed due to a cycle of sink ing building up and subsequent upheaval due to temperature and pressure dr ryan cited three fields of study which give a basis to the theories set forth in the lecture they are the study of the earth's surface the study of the earth's subsurface and laboratory studies supplementing the on-the-spot ob servations using the applachian mountain range as an example dr ryan described the mountain building process he compared the young applachian range of 600 million years ago to the present string of pacific islands stretching from japan to the eastern coast of borneo for 400 million years the trough created by the islands filled with sediment the pressures built up by this filling action caused the subsequent buckling of the moho region is or falls two lehigh wrestlers named ail-americans lehigh wrestlers bill merriam and kirk pendleton were selected for the mid-season all-american first team picked by jesse hoke editor of the amateur wrestling news the two represent the only easterners on the first unit although merriam has suffered a defeat he gained his position at 123 on the basis of the stiff competi tion which he has been facing all year pendleton named over phil kin yon of oklahoma state at 157 has displayed pinning aggressiveness and wide winning margins in all his bouts pat smartt and john illeng warth receiving honorable men tions for their performances thus far this season rounded out le high's representation syracuse although not placing a man on the first team had gerry everting at 1191 and jim nance at heavyweight on the second squad along with honorable mentions for bethel greenhalgh at 130 jim murrin at 137 dick slutzky at 147 and gary sirota at 167 three other eiwa wrestlers placed high in the all american listings mike johnson of pitts burgh and george edwards of perm state were given second team berths at 130 and 147 respectively navy's mike harmon placed on the third unit at 137 with their six all american se lections syracuse is rated as the chief competition for the en gineers in the eiwa tournament at annapolis on march 8 and 9 sheltermate no 4 julie this week's pretty sheltermate brightens the senior class of briarcliff junior college briarcliff manor n y though tal ented in song and modern dance julie is intent upon becoming an elementary-school teacher ' see marches page 3 notice holy communion will be m served at the packard
