lehigh university brown and white ,„,,,,,:„;:;:;:; xigjssß 01 74 — no 27 bethlehem pa friday february 8 1963 866-0331 gas leak report empties williams suspicion of a gas leak led to the evacuation of williams hall for an hour and a half tuesday afternoon seventy-five to 100 students and faculty members began to leave the building at 2:30 p.m when word was spread that a leak was suspected by building personnel doors and windows were thrown open and a call was placed to the local office of the lehigh valley gas division ugi at 2:35 p.m a truck from the gas company arrived and two service men began checking for leakage throughout the building using an explosimeter a portable gas detection device at 3:05 p.m the university police arrived and proceeded to remove other personnel who were still in the building faculty members reported that there had been a smell of gas on the upper floors of the building early in the afternoon several members of the maintenance staff remained in the building throughout the episode apparently unaware of the evacuation until the police arrived investigation revealed no explo sive atmosphere anywhere in the building however in a biology office-laboratory on the second floor room 208 a tray of liquid was found to be giving off a gas eous odor which was recorded by the explosimeter as being explo sive in concentrations near the tray paul miller assistant superin tendent off buildings later said that the substance was an epoxy compound no other explosive gases were found in the building despite an extensive search conducted by miller and the gas company per sonnel gas mains leading into the build ing and through the basement were checked and fonud to be in order recent gas explosions and es caping natural gas on fourth street and center street in beth lehem have increased the local interest in possible gas hazards aerial bandit engineer dave tanis steals a rebound off the outstretched fingertips of leopard preston four years has been appointed associate professor of history charles e patterson instructor in government has been promoted to assistant professor a specialist in the field of american colonial revolutionary history cary held research grants during the past two years he attained the rank of assistant professor at michigan state where he taught since 1958 prior to going to michigan state he taught american history at depaul university for two years born in wisconsin cary attended wisconsin state college before entering the university of wisconsin where he was awarded the bachelor of science de gree he received his master of arts degree at pennsylvania state university in 1951 and his doc tor of philosophy degree at the university of illinois in 1959 author of the book joseph warren physician politician patriot published by the university of illinois in 1961 he also had an article france looks to pennsylvania eastern state penitentiary as a symbol of reform published in the pennsylvania magazine of history and biography cary is a member of the mississippi valley history associa tion and the american history association patterson a specialist in the fields of american state and local government and politics and pub lic administration joined the staff in september 1962 as an instructor he studied at the university of birmingham in england under a fulbright scholarship during the academic year 1958-59 while an undergraduate at emory university he was a participant in the wash ington semester program at american university in the fall of 1956 both his bachelor of arts and master of arts de gree were received from emory university the university of illinois will confer the doctor of phil osophy degree upon him next week patterson is a member of the american political science association phi beta kappa national schol astic honorary phi sigma alpha the national gov ernment honorary and phi eta sigma national freshman honor society concert dance coffee will materialize at 8:30 p.m feb 22 in new york city's famed carnegie hall when the lehigh university and columbia university concert bands present the first joint college concert in the long history of the hall jonathan b elkus associate professor of music and elias dann columbia band director were discussing the columbia-lehigh foot ball game last fall when the idea came about dann had expressed a desire for the lehigh band to perform in a benefit concert at columbia however he said there was no suitable auditorium on the columbia campus he also said that his band had wanted to present one concert downtown however he said it would be too expensive a project it was then that dann and elkus came up with the idea for a joint concert on washington's birthday :.-•■■much planning has gone into the affair since that time the office of public information publications department of music alum ni association development office and committee on student activ ities of lehigh and comparable organizations at columbia have worked toward this end " columbia officials secured carnegie hall although they had some difficulty in arranging a date for example the date selected forced postponement of the lehigh winter concert until april 2 elkus said carnegie hall was chosen because of its very fine acoustics size and of course prestige with the concert date fast approaching there has been a shuttling f personnel between the two universities to finalize the plans and for the actual rehearsals elkus and henry a schmitt 63 band manager were in new york uesday for a day of rehearsals dann will attend lehigh rehearsals before the concert the whole columbia band will be on the lehigh campus sunday concert directors—prof jonathan elkus direstor of the lehigh band and elias
