lehigh university brown and white vol 74 no 24 bethlehem pa tuesday dec 18 1962 reich elected arcadia prexy michael reich 64 recording secretary of arcadia xvi was elected president of arcadia xvii at the new arcadia's second caucus sunday v rodger digilio and g sander davis bot hmembers of the class of 1964 ran against reich gerald feffer 64 defeated four other solons for the position of vice president john harper 65 james lucas 65 ronald kahlow 65 and davis were the other candidates alan eckbreath 64 vice president of last year's arcadia won the post of corresponding secretary uncontested digilio defeated sophomore charles hobson to become the recording secretary robert hess 64 edged another incumbent candidate bruce mc claren 64 for the position of treasurer reich stated that arcadia xvii should deal with issues which are more important to the university in his nominating speech he in dicated that this would help raise arcadia's prestige on campus if you members of arcadia xvii want the executive commit tee to be successful you will have to cooperate r steven schiavo 63 president of arcadia xvi stated in closing the caucus all the candidates had to nom inate themselves with the hare system of voting being used after nominations were closed the nom inees stated their qualifications and answered questions the nom inees were then asked to leave the room so the remaining members could voice their opinions on the various applicants after this short discussion the candidates were called in to vote squeezing the orange kirk the crusher puts the pressure on muscular reidner his efforts were in vain as the orangeman escaped with a msre (?) 1-16 decision michael h reich university purchases first moravian church the university has purchased first moravian church packer aye and webster st for 123,000 and intends to use the site in the uni versity's centennial development program previous plans released the past summer had said the church would not be affected by the project in addition to the purchase price the university will pay 6,000 to the church as moving expenses upon delivery of the property on or before august 31 1963 a new chemical engineering and metallurgy laboratory is to be constructed on the four acre plot which included the church the area is bordered on the north by packer aye between adams and webster sts and on the south by morton st included in the sale is the sextant's house at 115 packer st and the parsonage at 456 webster st the church has the option of re moving the organ kitchen equipment and any other materials the church trustees desire a 533,000 federal urban renewal grant was approved in july for the clearing of the laboratory site the money was allotted through the bethlehem redevelopment authority the total cost of preparing the site for building is 795,000 the state of pennsylvania granted about 14,000 to the project included in the proposed build ing site are 47 dwelling units and a number of small businesses two thirds of the units are substandard the authority will clear prop erty it now is in the process of acquiring and the university will clear lots it now owns an author ity spokesman said by law revision to be ratified at next meeting the past arcadias talked about revising the bylaws but we arcadia xvi did something about it r steven schiavo 63 arcadia president said afted the arcadia meeting sunday night arcadia finished making correc tions on the revised bylaws pre pared by the bylaws revision committee alan eckbreth 64 was chairman of the committee formal ratification will be at arcadia's next meeting jan 9 the revised bylaws must be rati fied by a 4/5 majority to pass after the formal ratification copies can be made available to two choirs the glee club and the cedar crest college choir present the 1962 christmas vespers service which filled packer memorial church to capacity sunday crowd hears vespers by charles rover cedar crest choir included the annual christmas vesper service presented sunday in packer memorial church by the univer sity glee club and the cedar crest college choir drew a capacity audience other musical groups participating were a string ensemble of professional players from philadelphia the university brass choir and members of the orchestra the bross choir conducted by prof jonathan elkus opened the program with two works for brass for the second gabrieli's canzon noni toni members of the brass choir played from three cor ners of the church and elkus conducted from the middle of the center aisle both of the works were well executed and the second was especially effective because of the unique method of presentation after the processional and the opening prayers by university chaplain raymond fuessle the lehigh and cedar crest choirs performed wolfgang mozart's coronation mass sung entirely in thke original latin soloists in the mass were sue crave and roberta kulp both 64 soprano and alto bruce leinster 64 tenor and joseph demb 63 bass the soloists were uniformly ex cellent in their performances with miss crave singing the longest and most difficult solo parts following the mass each of the rushing rules are acceptable hodil tells ifc we are satisfied with the rush ing commission's report ray mond hodil 63 president of the interfraternity council stated last night at the ifc meeting hodil said the difference in the final acceptance dates between ifc and the gryphon society was accepted because the gryphons can only accept a certain number of students a year and therefore must know early if they
