our time we must assist in shaping these times university president harvey a neville says in his annual report now being mailed to alumni the report explains that the university's character — its pur poses and its emphases — has de veloped over the years in large part as a response to the needs of our society in addition to filling the role which society expects of it a college or university has the responsibility of helping society to define the role itself in this re spect the institution of higher learning is unique this is always a difficule task and always an unfinished task it means that n preparing men for professional careers we must help them to find for themselves the reasons for which they pursue these careers in higher education no achievement is final in itself it only raises the standards by whch we evaluate our future per formance the needs of our own nation and the world are such to day that our accomplishments must be measured wth ever-higher standards still there was never a time in which traditional values were more important than they are today the expansion of the graduate program undertaken in 1961 does not imply neglect of other fields of knowledge which are equally im portant in the long range view in particular the social and life sciences and the humanities ac cording to the report develop ments here during the intervening year demonstrate
