lehigh university brown and white vol 74 — no 20 bethlehem pa tuesday dec 4 1962 irregularities delay elections the 1962 arcadia elections — scheduled to begin yesterday — were postponed one day because of irregulariies in the printed bal lots arcadia president r steven schiavo 63 delayed the elections shortly before noon on the grounds that the name of one of the 18 candidates was omitted from the ballot and another was mis-spelled the elections were then sched uled to begin today when it was learned that new ballots could be printed yesterday afternoon after the elections were post poned due to the balots it was learned that the two other irregu la ities each sufficient to declare election results null and void had it occurred schiavo explained that he can celled the elections because i felt most of the candidates were qual ified and did not want to see irreg ularities charged against arcadia he said his decision was made with wmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm the approval of preston parr asso ciate dean of students and dr lawrence whitcomb associate pro fessor of geology and advisor to arcadia he said other arcadians were not consulted because of the necessity to act quickly the other irregularities not discovered until after the elec tions were called off were failure to maintain four ballot boxes and failure to keep the boxes open be tween the hours of 9 a m and 4:30 p m either case is sufficient under the arcadia constitution to cause the results of the election to be declared null and void richard h lipstein 64 ar cadia elections chairman was in charge of arrangements lip stein said the mis-spelling of can didate roger digilio's name oc cured because the printer read my writing wrong he said the om mission of ronald a kahloh 64 from the ballot was an error of ommission on my part he said kahloh's petition had been mis placed lipstein also revealed that he got the ballots back from the printer on thursday cost of printing new ballots was 18 the new ballots are on yellow paper the old bal lots on blue paper were destroyed yesterday other costs incurred as a result of the election irregularities in cluded 11 for posters and at least 8 for notices to be mailed to all students ballot boxes are maintained by members of alpha phi omega na tional service fraternity lip stein said he went to the unver sity center polling place on the second floor opposite the post of fice at 9 a m and no one was there he said the same was true of drown hall ballots were set up in christmas-saucon hall and in packard laboratory lipstein said he said all polling places were in operation at 10 a.m lipstein and arcadian g sander davis 64 had a class in government in coppee hall between 9 and 10 a.m davis said he and lipstein went to the university center after the class and when no one was there he operated the ballot box lipstein said he was in the dirty rushing charged against 2 fraternities two fraternities have been charged with illegal rushing for this year anthony m carvette 63 vice president of the interfraternity council diclosed at the ifc meeting last night carvette refused to reveal the names of the fraternities involved in the dirty rushing until he had met with representatives of the fraternities j d leith associate dean of students sent a letter to carvette asking him to investigate the charges received by his office buses will again transport freshmen to and from town fraternities for the open house this weekend president raymond hodil 63 announced fraternity open house draws 500 freshmen first of three saturday afternoon marked the first of this year's three fraternity cpen-house sessions for freshmen and the attendance v/as estimated at nearly 500 the purpose of this relatively new part of the university's ever changing rushing policies is to allow the freshmen to visit the fra ternities and mix freely with the - brothers to get a more accurate picture of fraternity life saturday was devoted to the hill houses and the freshmen were required to visit at least six of them the session lasted from 1 to 5 p m in some cases fraternity recep tion of the freshmen included the brothers dates who acted as guides of the houses non-alco holics refreshments — the tradi tional birch beer and potato chips—were served at each house this saturday freshmen are in vited to visit the town fraternities and those participating are again required to visit at least five the transportation facilities to be employed are now being pre pared two or three buses will be employed and will leave at inter vals from the university gate to rushing begins—the initial meeting between freshmen and fraternity men takes place saturday during the first open house for campus houses frosh will have the opportunity to visit town fraternities this sunday vassar gridders defeated an eight-man kappa alpha fraternity football team defeated an 11-girl vassar college team 18-6 in a touch football contest sunday at poughkeepsie n y laccording to tom reed 64 ka coach the vas sar girls were much better than we expected they had an exceptionally sneaky defense in the second half which kept us from scoring the contest dubbed the wash bowl was or ganized through ka hugh osborn 63 osborn is pinned to belinda laird a halfback on vassar the vassar girls have already played teams from princeton and sienna college their competi tive schedule also resulted in a game against a vassar faculty team next week the co-eds play yale vassar tactics kept the ka squad working the clever vassar gals kept their safeties 40 yards be hind the line of scrimmage making it impossible for the lehigh men to throw a td pass if the fellows candidates get low attendance meet cancelled the meeting and discussion of the 18 arcadia candidates was can celled last night after only 13 peo ple showed up charles zall president of the class of 1966 had planned the meeting to acquaint the freshmen with the candidates the meeting was scheduled from 7 p.m in pack ard laboratory auditorium apparently there is not enough interest on campus to get 100 men or so to attend a meeting of the candidates who will govern the student body for the next year zall said in closing the meeting frosh driven from dorm by sofa fire at 3 a.m a fire in the lounge of dravo c-2 destroyed a leather sofa about n saturday filling the room with intense smoke cause cf the fire was listed by the fire department as a cigarette dropped on a leather couch due to the smoke firemen required scott air packs—gas masks attached to compressed air bottles carried on the back—to enter the room raid richard steams 56 they then used a hose connected to one of the engines to wet the sofa which they carried out of the building tore down and soaked again all that was left said steams was a wooden frame partly charred the steel springs and a very small portion of the cotton and hair matting used as a stuffing some of the water used on the fire leaked into dravo c-101 imme diately below the lounge forming a puddle on the floor john yon soosten one of the freshmen in the room said it probably leaked down around the steam pipes ivan robbins 66 was sleeping in his room directly above the lounge when at about 3:30 he heard the gongs and sleepily wondered what was going on a gryphon woke me up by shaking me by the shoulders he said and threw a jacket to me saying i think you had better get out of here where there's smoke . . . firemen prepare to leave dravo house after being called at 3 a m to extinguish a burning sofa in the lounge of dravo c-2 see 2 page 2 see vassar page 6 see two page 7 see frosh page 7
