lehigh university brown and white vol 74 — no 8 bethlehem pa friday oct 12 1962 historian to address graduation ceremony first woman speaker more than 160 degrees will be conferred on seniors and graduate students in the packer memorial church sunday catherine drinker bowen noted lecturer historian and biographer will speak at the founder's day commencement ceremonies at 2:30 p.m both she and jack k busby president of the pennsylvania powe and light co will receive honorary degrees president har vey a neville will confer the de grees of doctor of humane letters upon mrs bowen and doctor of laws on busby mrs bowen daughter of the university's fifth president the late dr henry s drinker will be the first woman speaker at com mencement in the university's 97 year history she will also be the first woman recipient of an hon orary degree from the university university phi beta kappa visit ing scholar in april 1959 mrs bowen has received other honorary degrees from the universities of pennsylvania michigan boston temple rochester northeastern dickenson college russell sage college beaver college and lafay ette college she was the recipient of the phillips award of the american jack k busby catherine drinker bowen sammy drovo d2 reach debate finals sigma alpha mv and dravo d-2 reached the finals in the williams debate series by defeating delta tau delta and richards 3-a wednes day afternoon in christmas-saucon hall the final debate will be held at 8 p.m monday in the osbourne room of the university center the winners were howard c newman 64 and michael h reich 64 representing sigma alpha mv and robert nelson 66 and charles schaeffer 66 representing dravo d-2 the teams debated the 1919 case of state vs fisher in which fisher a farmer was charged with shooting his neighbor spangler dur ing a quarrel over a property boundary line the case was complicated when the murder weapon could not be found and the accused fisher proved that he was not at the scene of the crime when it occurred the winning teams living group will receive a trophy and the team itself 200 the second-place team will receive 100 the debaters were given one hour to prepare their cases before the start of the proceedings sls features tresolini dr rocco j tressolini head of the department of government will be the first speaker in this year's senior league series at 8:15 tonight in the osbourne room of the university center his topic will be chief justice roger b taney and the merryman case j a civil rights case during the civil war dr tressolini head of the gov ernment department since its formation in july is a specialist iv the field of american govern ment and constitutional law he has been at the university slnce 1949 and was named profes sor of political science in 1958 he is the author of american constitutional law published in 1959 by macmillan co last summer dr tresolini ear ned out research in the library of congress and the national archives in washington d.c as well as at lehigh under a program of the american philosophical society this was a continuation of work begun three years ago concerning key decisions of particular supreme court justices which have an im portant effect on the development of american constitutional liber ties dr tressolini supervises the le high-washington semester pro gram this is a cooperative ar rangement between the american university and accredited colleges which send honor students to washington d c for a semester to study government he was also one of 15 scholars throughout the united states se lected for social science research fellowships to harvard law school during the summer of 1956 a reception in the faculty lounge will follow the lecture coffee and doughnuts will be served there is n.o admission charge and the public is invited also sponsoring the talk is omicron delta kappa the national leadership honorary rocco j tresolini ugly man contest helped by tickets || the added || athletic department may be another reason the three groups collecting the largest sum of money will be seniors select colonial fund the class of 1963 will invest money collected in its memorial gift campaign in the colonial growth and energy inc mutual fund senior class representatives se lected the fund at a meeting in the saucon valley country club tues day the boston firm has holdings in utilities electronics publishing automotive chemicals insurance and other industries the annual campaign will begin with a kick-off dinner nov 27 in the asa packer room of the university center team captains are now selecting recruiting assist ants deadline for recruiting is november 6 paul j franz jr vice president for development and public rela tions and chairman of the alumni class memorial gifts committee told the seniors tuesday that the university depends on private f sources for much of its support he said class giving programs inß the past have aided the university financially and have also helped form a group of faithful alumni and friends frederick johnston vice presi dent of winslow cohu and stet son new york city broker and advisor to the classes of 1961 and 1962 memorial gift committees told class delegates that investment of funds in stock supports lehigh and demonstrates belief in the united states as a growing prosperous nation he said lehigh can be open meeting may alter arcadia's power scope the arcadia revisions committee will hold an open meeting at 4 p.m monday in the osbourne room of the university any undergraduates interested in making suggestions towards im proving arcadia are invited to attend the committee which was created last december is considering making changes in the powers and scope of arcadia g sander davis 64 chairman of the committee said we are very interested in obtaining any new ideas from students on this idea the committee was formed at the beginning of the spring semester last year to recommend organizational changes for arcadia davis said the idea of an open meeting is based on a similar series of meetings held in 1947 he said his committee has corresponded with other schools in an effort to determine what types of organizations for student govern ment are most effective a report on the monday meeting and findings of the revision com mittee will be made at the regular arcadia meeting wednesday i sincerely hope that any student who feels that he has a good suggestion about possible reorganization of arcadia ought to attend this meeting davis said the meeting will give the committee a good idea
