throughout the country but at lehigh it has steadily risen said dean glenn j christen sen at a parents weekend panel discussion saturday moderating the discussion new challenges to lehigh students christensen noted that another trend has also been reversed our freshmen no longer need remedial work he said our students are now proud enough that they are challenging us to provide for this challenge the college hon ors program the advanced placement program and new math courses have been introduced the student honors programs are provided for those who will be the innovators cf this genera tion said dr alan s foust dean of the college of engineering and since many of the innovators are still in high school the advanced placement program brings the challenge cf college level study to the high school said james w mcgeady associate di rector of admission mathematics is part of the background and foundation of many fields of study said dr a e pitcher head of the department of mathematics it is one of those disciplines on which we very heavily rely said dr narenda loomba associate professor of economics in these days we might say that we are in the transition period — the changing of management from an art to a science he said there are opportunities for sophomores juniors and seniors in the advanced programs concluded dr w ross yeats associate dean of the college of arts and science the fifth panel member they may take independent study or unsched uled work to accelerate their study he said following the initial talks by the panel members was a question and answer period for the parents parents day greeting — dr glenn j christensen vice president and provost addresses parents in packard lab auditorium saturday ugly men vie for donations hp football tix fourteen living groups are spon soring contestants in the annual ugly man contest campaigning consisting of soliciting money for contribution to the campus chest fund begins tomorrow candidates registered as of last night include john d leith dean of students for delta upsilon paul stetten supply bureau em ployee detla tau delta alexander f bodner i.d photographer delta sigma phi coach michael cooley dravo c-4 dr robert s sprague associate professor of chemistry dravo d-4 leo c ocampo snack bar employee al pha tau omega donald lewin 64 taylor b also robert gibbey 66 rich ards 4 gene sheskia drinker 3-b john s steckbeck assistant direc tor of physical education price house dr raymond j emrich professor and head of the depart ment of physics dravo c-l john a bryan 111 65 phi sigma kap pa frederick j kass 64 delta chi and j patrick pat clark 63 park house sponsoring living groups will solicit funds on the library steps from between 9 a.m and 4 p.m tomorrow through friday in case of rain the polls will be located inside the main entrance of the library the three groups netting the largest sums of coin money will get their choice of seats for the 165 to receive degrees c d bowen founder's day speaker catherine drinker bowen noted lecturer historian and biographer will be the commencement speaker at the 84th founder's day cere monies sunday president harvey a neville will confer the honorary degrees of doctor of humane letters upon mrs bowen and doctor of laws upon jack k busby president of the pennsylvania power and light co the address by mrs bowen daughter of the university's fifth president the late dr henry s drinker will mark the first time that a woman has spoken at com mencement in the university's 97 year history the founder's day ceremonies were initiated in 1879 to honor asa packer who founded the univer sity in 1865 during the exercises which will begin at 2:30 p.m in packer memorial church approx imately 165 bachelor's master's and doctor's degrees will be con ferred upon seniors and graduate students who completed degree requirements during the summer an additional 532 baccalaureate and 181 advanced degrees were awarded by the university in jan uary and june of 1962 recipient of additional honorary degrees from the universities of pennsylvania michigan boston temple rochester northeastern dickinson college russell sage college beaver college and lafayette college mrs bowen is a member of the american phi losophical society a fellow in the royal society of literature in england and phi beta kappa the national scholastic honorary the university phi beta kappa visiting scholar in april 1959 mrs bowen is a trustee of the free library of philadelphia and a past trustee of sarah lawrence col lege she received the phillips award of the american philoso phical society in 1957 the phila delphia award in 1957 the na tional book award in 1957 the national achievement award in 1958 and was named a distin guished daughter of pennsylvania in 1957 mrs bowen whose father served as president from 1905 to 1920 was born on the campus of haver ford college haverford pa and was educated at the moravian seminary for girls the moravian college for women st timothy's school catonsville md peabody hp tickets distributed tomorrow houseparty dance tickets will be distributed to morrow night in room 206 of the university center from 7 to 9 living group social chairmen should pick up their tickets at this time in the event that all tickets are not distributed tomorrow they will be on sale at the student activi ties desk and on the night of the dance in the lower front lobby of grace hall indian summer will be the theme of this fall's houseparty said paul berg 63 chairman of the houseparty committee to increase the dancing area of the lower floor of grace hall the bandstand will be built on the bleachers decorations for the dance include a black back drop for the bandstand with silhouette of two dancers in front of a large moon eight foot artificial trees will be placed in front of the curtains on the second level of bleachers amber lanterns will be placed on red and white drapes hanging from the ceiling yellow and brown drapes with autumn leaves interwoven in white trellises will be hung on the walls students who wish to enroll their dates in the houseparty queen contest should deposit their date's picture at the student activities desk tomorrow and thursday the date's name and her escort's name and living group should be furnished with the picture residence halls council is offering a package plan providing room and board for dates for 9.20 for 21-meal plan holders the plan includes a candlelight dinner in the asa room of the university annual parents concert praised by reviewer by richard r hupka those who approached the combined varsity-concert band and glee club concert on parent's day with some vague feeling of appre hension need not have done so in the past these early concerts have attained a distinguished record of mediocrity—but this concert was de cidedly different the four pieces of bela bartok originally written for piano and arranged for band by mr suchoff came off as the average types of pieces which they really are nd matter how much respect one may have for bartok at his greatest as for instance in his violin con certo . in buxtehude's fanfare another type of order prevailed—in this case with an arrangement by mr elkus the band was so confident that it almost outdid itself—that is to say the performance was so good that it was almost unbelievable that a new band with so many freshmen could play so well with such integration and depth with such absolute assurance of the rightness of their playing unfortunately the finale from handel's water music j even in the british band version which i am told is not quite as bad as the alternative an american transcrip tion was just the reverse k|ng heads for home — behind the
