professor of metallurgy at lehigh university in collaboration with robert f mehl of the naval re serve laboratory at washington d c and charles s barrett assistant to dr mehl has accomplished an innovation in scientific photography known as the gamma ray with the use of a bit of radium no larger than a 22 calibre bullet engineers can put a photographic plate behind a steel girder and see whether or not it is sound work men can take pictures of locomo tive wheels and determine if all is sound within and submarine crews will be able to study vital points of their craft for suspected weak nesses created welding department dr doan one of the foremost authorities on welding in america is a graduate of lehigh and attend ed the university of berlin where he earned a ph d upon his return from germany dr doan developed the welding department at lehigh which now has the reputation of being one of the finest welding lab oratories among the engineering schools several important papers of dr doan have been published by the welding society of ameri ca in addition dr doan is well known as a consulting engineer in the welding field dr doan has spent the past four months in anacosdia d c where the tests and photographs which re sulted in the perfected gamma ray were held a noteworthy advantage of the gamma ray is that it does not destroy welding when directed upon it heretofore all attempts to penetrate welding have resulted in its decomposition better than x-ray until now the x-ray has been the sole means of inspection for de fects in metals and there are three distinct disadvantages to them which the gamma ray of radium has overcome the x-ray cannot penetrate deeper than four inches within reasonable time research experts of a large electric com pany have estimated it would cost 100,000 to develop an x-ray ma chine capable of penetrating the 10 inches reached by the gamma ray another advantage of the new method is its easy portability fin ally there is the matter of simpli city technicians can group the objects they want photographed and leave word for the night watch man to drop the radium into the tube when he starts work the ra dium will operate during the night and the technicians can pick up their plates in the morning lehigh women's club to hold reception to receive faculty members sept 30 in drown hall the lehigh women's club will hold first-year men were present to hear president j c ben edict of the arcadia explain the significance and traditions of foun ders day sports the spokesman explained the fact that freshmen should they carne gie comprehensive examination giv en last spring the man who was 50 percent from the bottom at le high was 66 percent from the bot tom in the state at large the examination given two years ago by the carnegie foundation was recognized to favor the arts colleges rather than the engineer ing schools the arts college at le high had to be compared with oth er arts colleges and the engineer ing schools with other engineering schools this year it is supposed that the sophomore examination equally favored arts and engineer ing students business students high the examination did not favor equally the students in the business college and there is no separate data this year for any of the bus iness schools in the state the av erage of the sophomores in bus iness administration at lehigh slightly exceeded the average for the state at large and may be tak en as an indication that this year as two years ago lehigh's business students surpassed in a marked de gree business students in other in stitutions - direct information withheld prof percy hughes of the psy chology department stated that while the reports of the carnegie examinations were strictly confiden tial the president of each college and university using the examina tions was informed as to the rela tive standing of his school in each of the three divisions of the tests this he implied was done to avoid possible detriment to schools fall ing in the low scoring section ranked fourth in 1928 the examinations held may 8 and 9 1928 were tabulated and graphed thus showing that there was not as wide a divergence as first thought at that time about 25 percent of the lehigh students examined were registered in the college of arts which was rated third of 40 institutions giving a b.a degree thus the entire university rating was lowered to fourth out of 49 colleges and universities in spite of first places in both engin eering and business administration lehigh was rated in engineering along with seven other colleges giving engineering degrees like wise for the business men who were classed with seven other places that bestowed business de grees young men score high a question in psychology was raised as to why for the fact that 18 year old seniors rated the highest generally with a marked de crease in scoring ability as the chronological age increased up to 24 years this point ha's not as yet been clearified for us sociologists would probably give as a reason for women having a better knowledge of language lit erature and fine arts than men the fact that these subjects are empha sized more in a woman's education than in a man's in other subjects of the examination the men had a decided edge over the fair sex the freshmen surpassed the aver age for the country at large to the extent that the 50 percentile man at lehigh is equal to the 67 percentile man elsewhere there is no mark ed difference in the psychological rating of the freshmen in the sev eral colleges though the engineers slightly excel the figures given by the american council on edu cation shows that this year's fresh man class slightly excels that of last year bishopthorpe given many improvements students return to redecorated rooms and hard wood floors new improvements at bishop thorpe manor confronted the young women students returning wednes day to school for the 1930-31 term rooms have been redecorated hard wood floors have been constructed in hallways and old beds have been replaced by new showers and a new gymnasium floor have been added teachers arrived wednesday to aid in the organization of classes thursday recitations begin today principal c n wyant declared this morning that the enrollment for the year has shown an increase over last year coming events the student health service vac cinated 350 freshmen recently the vaccinations were performed by dr r c bull his assistant dr j r bierman and two former lehigh men c m leister and j j long acre they used the multiple-pres sure method a simple but effective technique enabling them to tell whether or not the individual has retained immunity from previous vaccination all freshmen returned on the sec ond day for readings those who retained immunity were discharged within three or four days others returned for from ten days to three weeks until they showed the stig mata or take a few suffered from malaise or vaccination sick ness but were cured when placed on a proper diet candidates for freshman football exempt from vaccination will be vaccinated at thanksgiving or at the beginning of the second semes divinity howard s leach librarian of the lehigh university library smiled almost sardonically when he was asked what the monetary worth was of the books and manu scripts which are kept in the treas ure room we have not evaluated their value in terms of dollars he replied they are kept in the trea sure room because of their utility to the man who is seeking knowl edge or recreation of the mind from their contents every book in the room does have value however apart from the knowledge that is contained in it three factors of this value are if the book is autographed if it is of a limited edition and its age which implies its scarcity there are 16 original manuscripts which were printed by hand before the printing press was invented by gutenburg in the 15th century fifteen are in latin and one in ar abic this latter is part of the ko ran the bible of the mohamme dans four were books of prayer which were printed by catholic monks each one of these books took months of infinite patience and skill to complete they are plentifully illustrated and the print ing is done in many colors eighteen books on another table were printed between 1472 and 1530 they were all writ ten in latin because that was the only language in which scholars would deign to write and at that time only scholars wrote anything at all at another table are the first four editions of shakespeare's plays the frontespieces of the first edi tion is rather intriguing over a picture of shakespeare is printed mr william shakespeare comedies histories and tragedies published according to the true original copies this book was published in 1623 by two of the men who had been in shakespeare's dramatic company their purpose was that his plays might be left to posterity mr leach observed that if they had not done this we would have only half of his plays today several years ago a philadelphia collector paid 62,000 for another book of the same edition lehigh's book cost only 650 but it was bought in 1887 among the early american col lection one finds books written in many languages describing our country the first was written in 1509 by americus vespucci for whom our continent was named a swede professor of metallurgy at lehigh university in collaboration with robert f mehl of the naval re serve laboratory at washington d c and charles s barrett assistant to dr mehl has accomplished an innovation in scientific photography known as the gamma ray with the use of a bit of radium no larger than a 22 calibre bullet engineers can put a photographic plate behind a steel girder and see whether or not it is sound work men can take pictures of locomo tive wheels and determine if all is sound within and submarine crews will be able to study vital points of their craft for suspected weak nesses created welding department dr doan one of the foremost authorities on welding in america is a graduate of lehigh and attend ed the university of berlin where he earned a ph d upon his return from germany dr doan developed the welding department at lehigh which now has the reputation of being one of the finest welding lab oratories among the engineering schools several important papers of dr doan have been published by the welding society of ameri ca in addition dr doan is well known as a consulting engineer in the welding field dr doan has spent the past four months in anacosdia d c where the tests and photographs which re sulted in the perfected gamma ray were held a noteworthy advantage of the gamma ray is that it does not destroy welding when directed upon it heretofore all attempts to penetrate welding have resulted in its decomposition better than x-ray until now the x-ray has been the sole means of inspection for de fects in metals and there are three distinct disadvantages to them which the gamma ray of radium has overcome the x-ray cannot penetrate deeper than four inches within reasonable time research experts of a large electric com pany have estimated it would cost 100,000 to develop an x-ray ma chine capable of penetrating the 10 inches reached by the gamma ray another advantage of the new method is its easy portability fin ally there is the matter of simpli city technicians can group the objects they want photographed and leave word for the night watch man to drop the radium into the tube when he starts work the ra dium will operate during the night and the technicians can pick up their plates in the morning lehigh women's club to hold reception to receive faculty members sept 30 in drown hall the lehigh women's club will hold carne gie comprehensive examination giv en last spring the man who was 50 percent from the bottom at le high was 66 percent from the bot tom in the state at large the examination given two years ago by the carnegie foundation was recognized to favor the arts colleges rather than the engineer ing schools the arts college at le high had to be compared with oth er arts colleges and the engineer ing schools with other engineering schools this year it is supposed that the sophomore examination equally favored arts and engineer ing students business students high the examination did not favor equally the students in the business college and there is no separate data this year for any of the bus iness schools in the state the av erage of the sophomores in bus iness administration at lehigh slightly exceeded the average for the state at large and may be tak en as an indication that this year as two years ago lehigh's business students surpassed in a marked de gree business students in other in stitutions - direct information withheld prof percy hughes of the psy chology department stated that while the reports of the carnegie examinations were strictly confiden tial the president of each college and university using the examina tions was informed as to the rela tive standing of his school in each of the three divisions of the tests this he implied was done to avoid possible detriment to schools fall ing in the low scoring section ranked fourth in 1928 the examinations held may 8 and 9 1928 were tabulated and graphed thus showing that there was not as wide a divergence as first thought at that time about 25 percent of the lehigh students examined were registered in the college of arts which was rated third of 40 institutions giving a b.a degree thus the entire university rating was lowered to fourth out of 49 colleges and universities in spite of first places in both engin eering and business administration lehigh was rated in engineering along with seven other colleges giving engineering degrees like wise for the business men who were classed with seven other places that bestowed business de grees young men score high a question in psychology was raised as to why for the fact that 18 year old seniors rated the highest generally with a marked de crease in scoring ability as the chronological age increased up to 24 years this point ha's not as yet been clearified for us sociologists would probably give as a reason for women having a better knowledge of language lit erature and fine arts than men the fact that these subjects are empha sized more in a woman's education than in a man's in other subjects of the examination the men had a decided edge over the fair sex the freshmen surpassed the aver age for the country at large to the extent that the 50 percentile man at lehigh is equal to the 67 percentile man elsewhere there is no mark ed difference in the psychological rating of the freshmen in the sev eral colleges though the engineers slightly excel the figures given by the american council on edu cation shows that this year's fresh man class slightly excels that of last year bishopthorpe given many improvements students divinity howard s leach librarian of the lehigh university library smiled almost sardonically when he was asked what the monetary worth was of the books and manu scripts which are kept in the treas ure room we have not evaluated their value in terms of dollars he replied they are kept in the trea sure room because of their utility to the man who is seeking knowl edge or recreation of the mind from their contents every book in the room does have value however apart from the knowledge that is contained in it three factors of this value are if the book is autographed if it is of a limited edition and its age which implies its scarcity there are 16 original manuscripts which were printed by hand before the printing press was invented by gutenburg in the 15th century fifteen are in latin and one in ar abic this latter is part of the ko ran the bible of the mohamme dans four were books of prayer which were printed by catholic monks each one of these books took months of infinite patience and skill to complete they are plentifully illustrated and the print ing is done in many colors eighteen books on another table were printed between 1472 and 1530 they were all writ ten in latin because that was the only language in which scholars would deign to write and at that time only scholars wrote anything at all at another table are the first four editions of shakespeare's plays the frontespieces of the first edi tion is rather intriguing over a picture of shakespeare is printed mr william shakespeare comedies histories and tragedies published according to the true original copies this book was published in 1623 by two of the men who had been in shakespeare's dramatic company their purpose was that his plays might be left to posterity mr leach observed that if they had not done this we would have only half of his plays today several years ago a philadelphia collector paid 62,000 for another book of the same edition lehigh's book cost only 650 but it was bought in
