lehigh university brown and white vol 73 — no 22 bethlehem pa tuesday dec 12 1961 neville leckonby accept lambert cup by jeffrey stives the fifth annual lambert cup was presented to president harvey a neville sunday night at the lambert trophy and cup award dinner in the hotel manhattan new york city accepting the cup for lehigh were dr neville general percy sadler director of athletics william leckonby football coach and mike semcheski captain of the 1961 lehigh championship team dr neville coach leckonby and semcheski made brief speeches following the presentation noting that thanks to williams college was especially in order for their defeat of amherst the williams victory put lehigh ahead in the championship race coach leckonby pointed out that his 33-man team deserved the most credit in gaining the cup they did a fine job the coach said they kept the alumni happy and they kept them on the edge of their seats all season master of ceremonies for the dinner harvey harmon executive director of the national football foundation and hall of fame quoted leckonby as saying that semcheski was the team's great spiritual lead er and that he was directly responsible for the team's outstanding performance during the season following this introduction semcheski captain of the team which brought lehigh its second lambert cup award in five years spoke briefly concluding with the comment this is one of the greatest thrills of my life earlier in the evening gator bowl-bound perm state was formally awarded the 26th annual lambert trophy as the eastern major col lege football champion the award was made over a two way amplified telephone connec tion with officials at perm state the officials were unable to at tend the dinner because of weather both the lambert cup and ". . . but we didn't come for knowledge . . ." jubilant lehigh men toast their alma mater at the lambert trophy and cup award dinner in new york city on sunday lehigh's 6-2 record this season gained her the second lambert cup in the five years since its initiation dr neville accepted the cup for the university 225 seniors pledge 88,100 campaign will close dec 15 eighty-eight thousand one hundred dollars has been pledged by 255 seniors in the class gift cam paign as of friday louis dotti publicity chairman announced these figures are slightly over last year's cam paign said dotti when 280 seniors contributed 88,000 at approximately the same time however time is limited because the campaign closes dec 15 although no percentages were available on how many students have given dotti said 100 workers are finishing up the solicitation contributions range from 15 to 50 for a 20 year period late in october c stewart burns chairman of the giving announced the selection of the putnam growth fund as the investing group for the class last year the dryfus fund was selected for that campaign the putnam growth fund is a diversified open end mutual investment fund organized in 1957 by declaration of trust as a voluntary association un der the laws of massachusetts the fund a mutual shares plan will increase the original gift assuming favorable conditions the larger amount will be used to purchase the class gift 20 years from now in the first hour of the drive 24,000 was pledged by the 65 campaign workers promising to give nearly 20 per year for the next 20 years the campaign will end this friday with every senior being contacted for a contribution the class giving from the class of 61 broke all records with more than 140,000 in pledges con tributed by 415 seniors—representing 75 per cent of the class burns is hopeful that this year's total will ex ceed last year's high several captain's meetings are yet planned at which time the pledges are turned in exclusive interview with the brown and white the educator stated that federal support repre sents a way to get equal and ade quate support for public schools but cautioned that the federal gov ernment must take only a mini mum role in school administra tion the responsibility of the fed eral government he added has been admitted by most government spokesmen including the presi dent of the post-sputnik criticism of american education he agreed there is no question that educa tional practices can be improved such improvements dr the curtis string quar tet relaxing before their con cert
